When Patrick Hogan’s heart began racing earlier this year, his mindinstantly flashed back to the two other times in his life he’d experi‐enced a rapid heartbeat coupled with feelings of dizziness andlightheadedness. In the past, doctors told the 31‐year‐old GlendaleHeights resident that his rapid heart rate – 300 beats a minutecompared to the normal rate of 60 to 90 beats a minute – was like‐ly due to his working long hours, taking diet pills and drinking toomuch of caffeine.

Hogan called 911 when it happened this time and was rushed toAdventist GlenOaks Hospital’s Shanahan Emergency and TraumaCenter. He was then referred to Dr. John Beshai, medical director ofcardiac electrophysiology at Adventist GlenOaks Hospital and asso‐

2 FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE HEALHCARE GUIDE 2010

ciate professor of medicine, director of pacemaker and defibrillator serv‐ices, and program director of cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at theUniversity of Chicago.

Beshai used the hospital’s three‐dimensional EnSite Velocity mappingsystem to help locate the source of Hogan’s rapid heart rate and treat itwith remarkable precision. Adventist GlenOaks Hospital’s Heart &Vascular Institute is one of only three hospitals in the entire Chicagoarea to offer EnSite Velocity.

Beshai diagnosed Hogan with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), arapid heart rate originating from the atria, or the upper chambers of theheart.

“EnSite Velocity allows us to construct a three‐dimensional anatomicalmodel of the heart, which then can be usedto identify where the ‘short circuit’ is com‐ing from,” Beshai said. “At that point, radiofrequency energy is applied to the source ofthe arrhythmia and eliminated.”

“I felt like I was in a sports bar – not ahospital – because I was surrounded by somany flat‐screen TVs,” Hogan joked. “But Iknew the doctor had complete control andthat was reassuring. It took only three hoursfor him to cut off the electrical signal thatset my heart into overdrive.”

According to Beshai, the key to treatingpatients like Hogan is a correct diagnosis.

“SVTs are often misdiagnosed as panicattacks and the patient is placed on anti‐anxiety medication and referred to a psychi‐atrist,” Beshai said. “SVTs can be treatedwith a 98 percent success rate – which isquite impressive.”

“Our investment in this next‐generationtechnology is another example of AdventistGlenOaks Hospital’s commitment to improv‐ing patient care,” said Chief Executive OfficerBrinsley Lewis.

tional open radical prostatectomy

procedures,” according to

Michael Rashid, M.D., urologist.

“The da Vinci also fosters greater

preservation of the nerves, result-

ing in lower impotency rates.”

“Patients who have traditional

prostatectomy procedures typical-

ly have a six-week recovery peri-

od, whereas patients treated with

the da Vinci system typically

have a two-week recovery peri-

od,” said Dr. Rashid.

Jonathan Song, M.D., gynecol-

ogist, is using the surgical robot

for myomectomies (removal of

fibroid tumors) and hysterec-

tomies because it “provides more

precision, allowing us to do

laparoscopic procedures instead of having the patient undergo major abdominal

surgery, resulting in less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay. This is a major

benefit to our patients. To have the opportunity to offer this level of technology

right here in the Tri-Cities area is something we’re very excited about,” Dr. Song

said.

Linda Bauer, director of surgery at Delnor, added, “We are thrilled to offer the

availability of the da Vinci® surgical system here at Delnor. We know that there

is a general preference among our patients for minimally-invasive surgical proce-

dures when at all possible, and we are proud to have our surgical staff confidently

utilizing such an advanced level of technology.”

For more information about the da Vinci surgical robot, go to delnor.com or call

Delnor’s Physician Finder service at 630-208-3993.

The hospital recently added the da Vinci® robot to its sur-

gical team – giving physicians greater precision and control

in the operating room, and enabling patients to benefit from

smaller incisions, less pain and quicker recovery times.

Delnor is one of the few hospitals in the Midwest to offer

the latest version of the da Vinci, called the Si. It is the

most advanced robotic technology currently available in the

field of surgery.

With its four robotic arms and a superior 3-D visualiza-

tion system, the da Vinci’s masterful capabilities are used

for urologic, general, cardiac and gynecological surgeries.

Once laparoscopic incisions are made and the robotic arms

are positioned, the surgeon sits at a remote control panel

near the patient to view the surgical site in 3-D. The sur-

geon then manipulates the robot to perform the surgery..

The robot eliminates hand tremors and other factors that

can sometimes impact conventional surgery. A complete

surgical team is with the surgeon and the patient at all

times, assessing the patient and assisting the robot.

“The da Vinci® will allow us to do more complex

laparoscopic procedures through smaller openings, result-

ing in less pain and less blood loss and a faster recovery for

the patient ,” said Gustavo Banti, M.D., urologist.

“Whatever movements you make with your hands, those

are the movements the instruments make inside the body.

Complex operations that require precise dissection and fine

suturing are much easier to perform with the da Vinci sys-

tem, which allows us to offer the benefits of less-invasive

surgery to many more patients,” says Dr. Banti.

“The da Vinci’s capabilities are especially useful for

prostate surgeries because the 3-D imaging allows for bet-

ter cancer control with results equal to or better than tradi-

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, more than 700,000 total hip and knee replacements are per-

formed annually and by 2030, these numbers are projected to increase to 3.4 million.

Recognizing that specialized rehabilitation is needed after a joint replacement, Marianjoy launched the Joint Access

Program, designed for a patients’ specific needs including diagnosis and general health, goals, and even age. Providing mul-

tiple levels of care—inpatient, subacute and outpatient therapy—the program offers a seamless transition as the patient pro-

gresses.

“After a joint replacement, patients may require intensive inpatient rehabilitation but can quickly progress to our outpa-

tient level of care,” explains Dr. Aliga, Medical Director of the Marianjoy Joint Access Program. “Those needing 24-hour

nursing care and more time to recover may be better suited for our subacute level of care. In each case, patients are able to

recover at their own pace, while receiving the con-

venience of services in one facility.”

Dr. Aliga’s background is in orthopaedic surgery.

As the leader of the Joint Access team, he collabo-

rates with the clinicians, offering guidance and

ongoing education, thereby providing the most effi-

cient therapy possible for the patient, enabling them

to recover quicker.

“Our program is unique because the patient’s

treatment is really an extension of the surgeon’s

protocol,” continues Dr. Aliga. “Maintaining an

open line of communication with the surgeon, we

follow the goals and restrictions they have for their

patient. The treatment details are executed based on

the surgeon’s instructions and our understanding of

the specific biomechanics involved. This way, we

achieve optimal recovery in the most efficient

way.”

The Joint Access Program is complemented by a

variety of programs and services at Marianjoy

including the Balance and Vestibular Clinic, a

Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic, as well as a warm-

water aquatic therapy pool.

Marianjoy’s orthopedic and Joint Access pro-

grams are further enhanced by ongoing research in

the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The continual review and incorporation of new

knowledge allows the patient to receive the most

updated treatment plan that can help maximize

results.

“We treat nearly 500 orthopedic patients each

year through Marianjoy’s inpatient and subacute

programs and an additional 1,200 per year on an

outpatient basis,” notes Dr. Aliga. “By reviewing

and monitoring patients’ outcomes, we have refined

the orthopedic rehabilitation regimen and treatment

plans to deliver the best care possible, getting

patients back to their normal daily activities more

quickly.”
