Biographical note on Jesse Hawes
Jesse Hawes was born on August 21, 1843 in Corinna, Maine. In the summer of 1861, he
enlisted with the 9th Illinois cavalry for the Union in the American Civil War and participated in
battles in Missouri and Arkansas. In 1862, he was wounded at Jacksonport, Arkansas, and in July
1864, he was taken prisoner and held at various Confederate prisons until the war was over,
including Cahaba prison in Alabama. After the war, he continued his studies in medicine and
graduated from the University of Michigan in 1868 and from Long Island Hospital in 1871. Jesse
arrived in Greeley in 1872 where he set up his medical practice. Jesse was active in the medical
community for the entirety of his career. He married Clementine Sarah Rockwell in 1874 and
together they had one daughter, Mary Moneta Hawes. Jesse Hawes died on August 4, 1901 in
Greeley.
Biographical note on Clementine Hawes
Clementine Sarah Rockwell was born on September 16, 1847 in Canaan, New Hampshire. She
came to Greeley in 1874 and in the same year married Jesse Hawes. Together they had one
daughter, Mary Moneta Hawes. Clementine was active with the First Presbyterian church in
Greeley and was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps. Clementine died in 1923 in Denver.

Biographical note on John W. Amesse
John William Amesse was born on January 15, 1874 in Eagle River, Michigan. In 1894, he
graduated from the University of Michigan with a medical degree. He continued his post-
graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. John
served with the Marine Hospital Corps and later served in various posts with the United States
Public Health Service in the Philippines, the Hawaiian Islands, and Costa Rica. On January 11,
1905, he married Mary Moneta Hawes in Greeley. After getting married, John and Mary moved
to Denver. Together they had three children, Jessie Louise Amesse, Helen Moneta Amesse, and
John Hawes Amesse. Jessie died shortly before her first birthday. John served with the Marine
Hospital Corps during the Spanish-American War and WWI. In addition to those wars, he served
with the Corps in the Philippines, the Hawaiian Islands, and Costa Rica. John was active in the
medical community of Denver and was vice president of the American Medical Association in
1943, president of the Colorado Medical Society, a charter member of the American Academy of
Pediatricians, and a member of the Lawton Post No. 1, Spanish-American War Veterans.
Throughout his career, John researched pediatrics and was recognized nationally for his findings.
In November 1947, he retired from actively practicing medicine. John Amesse died on August
21, 1949 in Denver.
Biographical note on Mary Moneta Hawes Amesse
Mary Moneta Hawes was born to Jesse and Clementine Sarah Rockwell Hawes on March 7,
1878 in Greeley. In 1898, she graduated from Colorado State College of Education and in 1900
from the Chicago Free Kindergarten Association of Armor Institute. In 1900, she went to
Honolulu to teach kindergarten and met John W. Amesse. On January 11, 1905, Mary married
John W. Amesse in Greeley. After getting married, John and Mary moved to Denver where Mary
was active in the community and John had his practice. Mary was involved with the canteen
service during World War I, the USO during World War II, and served as president of the
Woman’s Auxiliary to the Colorado State Medical Society in 1934-35. She was also active with
the Parent-Teachers organization and a member of the Colorado Chapter of DAR. Mary Amesse
died on June 27, 1956 in Denver.
Biographical note on Helen Moneta Amesse
Helen M. Amesse was born at Mercy Hospital in Denver on November 8, 1909 to Mary Moneta
Hawes Amesse and John William Amesse. Helen Amesse attended school in Denver and then
went to college at Smith College. After graduating, she returned to Colorado and received
another degree from the University of Denver. When she was not traveling around the world, she
worked as a librarian at the University of Denver. Helen died in Denver on October 22, 1996.
Biographical note on John Hawes Amesse
John Hawes Amesse was born on May 24, 1915 to John W. and Mary Moneta Hawes Amesse.
He attended school in Denver and then went to college at the University of Colorado where he
received his B.A. degree in 1937 and his M.D. in 1941. On June 24, 1939, John married Eloise

Montandon. Together they had two children, John Charles Amesse and Carol Eloise Amesse
Kollman. After graduating, John entered the United States Army as a Medical Officer. During
WWII, he served in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic action
and the Combat Medical Badge. After the war, he continued to serve in the Colorado National
Guard until his retirement in 1968. While living in Colorado, John was active in the Denver
medical community like his father and served on several boards. John died in Denver in October
1971.
