DISTRICTS The third number is the FIPS code, there are 3,135 FIPS codes in the US, so we won’t show them all here. As an example, these are the FIPS codes in Utah. FIPS codes related to counties. FIPS CODE The 5th number (a number and a letter) refer to the expiration date of the FFL. The number refers to the year that it expires, so a 5 would expire in 2015. The letter refers to the month in which it expires, and those correlate to A–M (without using ‘I’). EXPIRATION Reading our example FFL you would know that it belongs to a company in the western region, in Utah, in Salt Lake County that deals in firearms/gunsmithing. Their FFL would expire in May of 2017 and their unique number assigned by the ATF is 01234. The 4th number denotes the type of FFL.
