curricular and manage its own budget without government interference. This has had a

profound effect on academic life at the University, known for its academic autonomy.

As a result UNAM is a place with active political discussion in Mexico, mostly by

studentsandfacultymembers,somewhicharealsoinfluentialinMexicanpolitics,leading

to the creation of several groups supporting both left- and right ideological platforms.

WORLD HERITAGE CAMPUS CENTRAL DE CIUDAD UNIVERSITARIA

Ciudad Universitaria (main campus of UNAM) was designed in 1947 by

professors and senior students of the School of Architecture. The concept was to

essentially arrange buildings and open spaces into a unique complex according to the

international trends of that time; as a result, its Architecture, Landscape Architecture,

Urban principles, function, and its fusion with the Mexican culture bring into being one of

the most important Architectural University complexes in México and the world.

In 2007 Ciudad Universitaria was designated by UNESCO as World

Heritage, including the Rectoría Tower, Biblioteca Central, and the Architecture,

Engeneering, Business,Medical, Odontology, Chemestry, Law, and Philosophy schools

as well as the Stadium and the sports facilities.

Topromoteexchangeactivities,UNAMhasatotalof561bilaterallagreements

with different universities around the world, involving lectures, exhibitions, semester

and annual academic exchange programs as well as summer courses. UNAM and the

Universities involved in these agreements share the understanding of the importance of

the international collaboration as means of creating new ways of thinking.

The main issue of our study program is the Design Studio, where the

student is given a strong formation and is taught with various design methods depending

on the studio (taller) during this course personal architectural abilities are experienced,

produced and developed. In order to provide a complete architectural education, the

Design Studios integrates theory, construction, urban and environmental planning, and

social studies classes. To provide the students with a holistic knowledge to prepare them

for their future as practicing architects.

One of the primary goals of this courses’ structure is to help students to present

coherent proposals to help, improve and support social enviromental and desing issues

in the mexican social context

As a result, the program has 39 mandatory courses. The elective courses will be

chosen within the Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, Urban Planning,

A new distribution of the citizens and

a new position on urban planning in our society

hasmodifiedMexico´surbanizationduringrecent

years as a result of changes in socioeconomic and

political issues.

As an answer to these new conditions,

the Urban Studies Undergraduate Program

develops proposals for the academic development

of the urban planner in our society, focusing on

four main issues:

To encourage public cooperation, teaching the students from a humanistic `

perspective.

Topromotebalancedtrainingbasedonstrategicprojects;helpingthestudents `

to improve their skills in communication and negotiation throughout practice.

To promote a mutual cooperation between authorities and society in order to `

improve the urban territories.

FacultaddeArquitecturaisfocusingontheredefinitionofthetheoryandpractice `

of these issues promoting a stronger connection between the Urban Planner and

social issues.

The undergraduate program consists of 10 semesters and is divided into 4

phases: Initial, Basic, Formative and Professional Incorporation.

The ` initial phase in the 1st and 2nd semesters

The ` basic phase corresponds to the 3rd and 4th semesters when the students

learn basic information. By the end of this year students will be able to analyze

the urban problems, which mostly deal with its physical and territorial issues.

During the ` formative phase the students knowledge, abilities and attitudes are

developed with the intention of organizing urbanism

` Professional Incorporation corresponds to the 8th, 9th, and 10th semesters

The structure of the program is divided into 4 areas:

The student receives the necessary information to develop an approach to

confront the problems or issues affecting the city; this may be either through a direct and

physical intervention, or through alternate indirect methods.

Urban Culture: `

This area focuses on the discussion of values, historical events, and

analysis that explain the city configuration. It allows the student to develop a critical

positionaboutsocialequity,sustainability,efficiency,andurbanimage.

Technology: `

Provides the student with information on the complex transformation of

urban sprawl by identifying its structure, systems, and relationship with the natural

environment.

Extension: `

- The student gets involved in real work.

- Within the Academic Curriculum

- The student must develop a social awarness by interacting with real

The Industrial Design Undergraduate Program is focused on teaching

industrial designers with a complete grasp on the ergonomic and aesthetic aspects to

involveinawiderangeofprojectsordisciplines.

This is possible as a result of the CIDI´s cultural, visual, and technological

understanding; integrating social needs but always keeping in mind the importance of

innovation.

The courses are connected and structured by semester. Therefore, it is

required that the students respect the academic curricula order to be better prepared not

only for future courses, but to become as designer.

The courses taught during the first and second semesters are Studio,

Theory-History, Investigation, and Technology; these are studied at the Architecture

Undergraduate Program

From 3rd to 10th semesters the Industrial Design academic program is divided

into 3 areas:

Technology `

Focused on improving student’s abilities and an understanding of the applied

technology for industrial processes

The Industrial Design program has four phases:

- The basic phase corresponds to the 1st and 2nd semesters, which are

studied at the Undergraduate of Architecture as an introduction to the

foundation of design.

- The initiation phase 3rd and 4th semesters is an introduction to real

situations and experiences in the Industrial Design field. During these

semesters a wide range of products are dveloped through personal

professional practice and required courses.

- The development phase from 5th to 8th semester the student

develops products with an analytic and cultural background, as well as with a

technological and practical design conscience. At this point the

student is allowed to choose elective courses. At the end of this phase the

student is given the opportunity to become part the Industrial Design

Center of Social Service research and become a part of the Professional

Promotion of the CIDI.

- The assimilation phase corresponds to the 9th and 10th semester when the
