Q Why did you choose
to go to art + design
school, and how did
you choose this one?
A From an early age
I was always interested
in drawing and painting.
Then for about a decade
I got into graffi ti. I chose
an art school because
it just made sense to
continue with Fine Arts
education. I started
my studies at University
of Regina, but after the
fi rst year there I was
uncertain about the
Print Media program
so I transferred to
ACAD to continue
my studies.
Q What will you
miss the most when
you graduate?
A I will miss the
environment of the
school. I will miss being
surrounded by the
numbers of creative
minds that are always
able to share ideas
and challenge my
creative thinking.
Q How do you see
your work developing
in the future?
A I am fascinated by
comparing one’s views
on life with the set
parameters that I brought
from back home. I love
exploring. This kind of
exploration has become
a main drive in my art
practice. Generally
my work contains a
representation of the
outside surroundings
through a self-portrait.
I determine certain
qualities of the social
group around me and
try to put myself into
their position. Sometimes
a self-portrait isn’t as direct
and representational.

“I moved to Canada in my late teens. Coming from
Russia, I experienced a huge culture shock. In Russia
I was used to dealing with a very classical model
of education. When I moved to Canada I struggled
a bit with the freedom that was offered to me and
the strict educational background I had behind my
shoulders. But I was able to put the two different
environments and take the best from both worlds
and apply it to my practice. I now realize that it has
set me up for an environment after graduation.”

“It has always been my belief that in the overlap
is where the truly marvelous lies. My horoscope
recently told me that ‘I must serve as a vehicle
of regeneration in this world,’ and whether or not
it is true it is still a nice thing to believe in. What I
take away from this is that there is a responsibility
felt as a human being, but particularly as an artist,
as observer/creator/commentator/connector of
my inner and outer worlds, that the overlaps are
everywhere, and that art is the service of sharing
the marvel.”

Meet Lionel, 4th Year Student
“I think that most people have a misconception of art
school being so easy and that you just draw pictures
all day. What I’ve come to realize is that in order
to be successful as an artist, it requires more than
just creativity. You need to be disciplined in your
work ethics and really love what you do. If anything,
I believe that what artists and designers do is we
challenge the world’s way of thinking and it can be
diffi cult and grueling but it can also be rewarding.
It’s your passion that allows you to continue doing
what you do.”
Q What motto do
you live by?
A I don’t see the glass
half empty or half full,
my expectation is that
the glass should always
be fi lled to the top.
Q What do you value
the most about ACAD?
A I really value the time
spent with instructors
and the student to
teacher ratio. Because
the program is rigorous
and the classes are
small, you get to spend
a lot of quality time with
your peers - it felt like
a family.
Q What direction do
you want your work
to take you?
A I believe that design
is a tool which can
enhance the quality
of life and accessibility
for everyone in our
society. Design needs
to be considered in
all aspects to be both
beautiful and functional
- it should communicate
a message and connect
with its audience. I like
to challenge the way
people look at things
or do something
unexpected and I like
to attach my work with
conceptual thinking.
Recently, I had the
opportunity to work
in New York City for
the fashion publication
NYLON magazine this
past summer. I was
immersed in a very
fast-paced environment
and was exposed to
a more eclectic and
grungy style of design.
In the future I hope
to infuse New York’s
design sensibilities
with my current style.
A To always recognize
the privilege that we
are living, and take
advantage of that
as far as you can go.
An admirable teacher
of mine would say:
if you are capable
of being brilliant,
why would you choose
to be anything less?
Q What motto do you
live by?
A Embrace the unknown,
practice thankfulness,
use the Golden Rule,
unconditional love, boil
before you begin, and
if you’re ever feeling
out of sorts, just dance
dance dance.

of additive, subtractive and reproductive
methods such as modeling, casting, carving,
welding, woodworking and fabrication.
The sculpture faculty – all practicing,
exhibiting artists – encourage conceptual
and material-based inquiry as students build
an individual practice in the visual arts.
Sculpture Liberal StudiesThe goal of ACAD’s Liberal Studies
program is to support students in becoming
confi dent art and design practitioners by
helping them to situate their professional
practices within society in an ethical
and responsible manner.
Serious study of art and design, in the context
of contemporary culture and society, requires
familiarity with a broad range of historical,
critical and methodological perspectives.
Creative practice draws on many disciplines
including literature, visual arts and design
histories, anthropology, cultural studies
and professional practices. Liberal Studies’
emphasis on critical discourse and methods
supports student engagement with the
practice of interpretation in a contemporary
context. This knowledge helps students
to understand their own production and
to respond to the work of others. All Liberal
Studies courses include the study and
application of processes of interpretation
and methods of analysis. These essential skills
prepare students to engage effectively
with contemporary culture.

First Year StudiesAll ACAD programs begin with First Year
Studies (FYS), a common foundation
year experience.
In First Year Studies, students explore
a wide range of ideas in a challenging
cross-section of studio and Liberal Studies
courses. FYS provides an immersive
introduction to the world of visual culture
in an environment of critical inquiry and
creative thinking. Through a broad variety
of studio and theory-based courses,
students experience a diversity of visual
languages that prepare them for future
study in fi ne arts, design and media arts.

Education:
Personality in three words:
Words to live by:
“The more mistakesyou make, the moresuccess you’ll have.”
The glass work of Natali Rodrigues often takes
the form of a vessel. How can her work inspire you
to create form and function for your own vessel?
Go to the Sketch Book, page 4.
Q How did you choose
art? teaching?
A Art choose me. I was
a teaching assistant
during my undergraduate
and came to really
appreciate teaching
as a craft and as an
act of storytelling.
Q What do you value
the most about teaching
at ACAD?
A There are many things
that I value about ACAD:
I value the students and
their sense of joy and
wonder at learning new
skills and ideas. I value
the small size of the
classes. I value my
colleagues, both faculty
and staff who feel a
sense of stewardship and
care for the college, the
students and each other.
ACAD is a supportive
learning environment –
supportive of teaching
as a living, breathing,
expansive practice.
Q What advice would
you offer to someone
considering an art
school education?
A The advice I wish I had
received before I started
art school is this: don’t
be afraid to mess up.
You’re supposed to.
The more mistakes you
make, the more success
you’ll have. Seems crazy,
right? But it works.
Because art and design
school is one of the few
places you can push
your skills and thinking
in many diverse
directions. Every failure
marks something you
thought you couldn’t do.
And the next time you
try it will work.
Meet Natali, Glass Faculty
“My family is nomadic by nature. They have traveled
from India and Europe through Africa to Canada,
and now the family is on the move again. In this
tradition of changing towns, countries and continents
every generation the family has developed a strong
connection to journey, sense of identity, and of story.
Along with emigrating, my family has also had
a strong tradition of both religious and
vernacular pilgrimage.”

Meet Jordan, Photography Faculty Meet Jesse, First Year Studies Faculty
“Art always had a strong pull for me, but I was
originally majoring in the physical sciences. I wanted
to be an artist, but I was under the impression that
it was not an academic pursuit. I had a professor
who convinced me otherwise and, shortly after,
I switched majors. I came to teaching more naturally,
after being allowed to teach a class, I realized that
my interest, enthusiasm, and passion about art
was contagious. I view teaching as an opportunity
to share what I love with others who are also deeply
invested and interested in art, and therefore,
I cannot imagine a better profession.”
“I was drawn to creative practice largely because
of my early involvement with the indie and punk
environment surrounding skateboarding. In that
culture I was exposed to how critical perspectives
could be expressed through creative practices like
art, design, fashion, craft and music. In my teaching
practice I look to share my creative outlook with
my students and encourage their own critical inquiry
and independent creative thought. I feel that the
single most important attribute of creative practice
is its ability to critically challenge convention while
simultaneously proposing something innovative
and new.”
Q What do you value
the most about teaching
at ACAD?
A Teaching gives me
the opportunity to
constantly be engaged
with people who share
passion and enthusiasm
for art making as well
as providing me with
the ability to constantly
challenge my assumptions
of where photography is,
and where it is headed.
Interaction with engaged
intelligent, and open-
minded students changes
education from a
one-way dissemination
of information to a
dynamic, exciting, and
constantly challenging
process where educator
and student fl uidly
switch roles.
Q What do you value
the most about teaching
at ACAD?
A The diverse programs
and multiple creative
streams here at ACAD
are very unique and
provide a phenomenal
opportunity to create
work that is cross-
disciplinary and inspired
by multiple fi elds and
methods. There is a real
sense of auspiciousness
and excitement that
permeates the school
and I fi nd both faculty
and students to be
very engaged with
contemporary creative
culture even outside
Q What advice would
you offer to someone
considering an art
school education?
A Come to art school
because you love art,
have an open mind,
and want to learn.
That should be your
primary motivation.
Focus on your ability
to synthesize new
information, engage in
new methods of inquiry,
and learn how to learn.
of individual practice.
I feel really at home here
and fi nd that everyone
shares the same sense
of adventure, dedication
and ability to laugh.
Q What information
would you offer to
someone considering
an art school education?
A ACAD is about
creative culture in a really
diverse and expanded
way. There are always
great dialogues about
what is happening
in the world and they
do not end when class
does. A city that has
a dedicated art and
design school is always
a lucky city as the school
tends to become a hub
of local activity and
really informs the
creation of a vibrant
creative culture outside
the school.

a recognizable brand with a great logo. How can
this logo inspire you to create your own logo?

Q What did you value
the most about ACAD?
A The best part of my
experience at ACAD
was being surrounded
by other students.
A certain camaraderie
forms between learning
artists and I found the
diversity of talent to
be greatly inspiring.
Q How do you see
your work progressing
in the future?
A Ideally I would like
to be doing all freelance
work so that I can work
abroad for a while.
Q How would you
describe your work to
someone who doesn’t
know much about
illustration or design?
A I’ve found that
my dual interest in
illustration and design
has benefi ted my skill
in both disciplines.
The design ideas that
I have at GQ often
rely on an illustrative
execution, and the
illustrations that I make
in my home usually
possess typographic
elements and a strong
graphic sensibility.

Campus Tours
Student Ambassadors are available most Friday
afternoons at 2 pm during the academic year to
provide tours for prospective students. Campus
tours provide an opportunity to see our facilities
in use and our students in action. In order to assist
us in scheduling volunteers, we ask that you
contact the Admissions Offi ce to confi rm your
visit prior to the tour date.
Chat@ACAD
ACAD’s online forum provides an opportunity for
prospective students to chat live with ACAD staff,
current students and college alumni. This is your
chance to get the student and alumni perspective
or have any outstanding admissions questions
answered. These chat events are of particular
interest to international applicants as current
international students may be available to provide
helpful hints about studying in Canada.
Information Sessions
ACAD Information Sessions provide an overview
of the College’s programs, admissions procedures
and alumni profi les. (Duration approximately
one hour. RSVP not necessary.)
National Portfolio Days
As part of the National Portfolio Day Association,
ACAD participates in NPDA events across North
America. The association consists of accredited
art colleges and university art departments which
are members of the National Association of Schools
of Art and Design. It is the only organization of
its kind, and its membership represents the highest
standard of visual arts education. National Portfolio
Days help further the artistic development of young
artists by bringing together experienced college
representatives to review work and offer critique.
