there in June 2015. (The USA is actually the second most popular destination for UK

expats behind Australia).

But before you get too carried away planning to spend your first dollar down 5th

Avenue there are some essential matters that you need to deal with.

Most importantly be sure you are welcome to reside in New York on a permanent

basis.

You must have an immigrant visa, whether or not you are planning to work. Can your

employer, spouse or an immediate relative sponsor you?

Contact the US Embassy & Consulates in the United Kingdom. You will need to

complete an application and undergo a medical and interview. These stages can be a

lengthy process so allow plenty of time ahead of your desired move date.

All US residents are required to have a minimum level of health cover so arrange your

Medical Insurance before you go and please make sure you fully understand how your

policy operates. Do not get caught out by the extortionate US healthcare fees.

Finding a place to live in New York is relatively simple but do some proper research

into what is available. If you are used to suburban living in the UK, you might be

disappointed at the size of apartments and lack of garden. You don’t have to stay in

Manhattan itself however, consider areas such as Queens or Brooklyn as these have

easy commutes into the City. The good news is that, according to cost of living

experts Expatistan.com, life in New York saves you approximately 14% compared to

the cost of living in London.

Arrange your banking. Most UK High Street banks operate in the US so it is worth

speaking to your branch to see what they can offer if you don’t want the upheaval of

opening a new account.

You will also probably need to think about transferring sterling from the UK into US

dollars and vice-versa so think about using a currency transfer company to avoid the

high bank transfer fees. If you are buying your New York property or will be

transferring regular funds overseas you can even arrange to lock in your exchange

rate (known as a ‘forward contract’) for a set period of time, this means you know

what exchange rate you will be getting each time and you won’t have to worry about

market fluctuations. “More bang for your buck” as the Americans say!

The Election

You cannot fail to have noticed there is a US Presidential Election coming up! The

22nd Amendment of the United States Constitution does not allow an incumbent

President to stand for a third term so somebody new will definitely be moving into

The White House. Campaigning is rife across all states and competition is becoming

ever more heated between Donald Trump (Republican Party) and Hillary Clinton

(Democratic Party).

Donald John Trump, 69, is well known for his business acumen boasting a vast real

estate portfolio along with various other businesses he owns. He has also extended

his celebrity by taking part in television shows such as The Apprentice and personally

writing numerous best-selling books. But now he is also the ‘presumptive nominee’ of

the Republican Party for President of the United States in the 2016 election. This

means his party rivals have been forced out of the race, but at the time of writing he

still needs to secure 8 delegates to clinch the Republican presidential nomination.

With his slogan “Make America Great Again” Trump’s campaign focusses on illegal

immigration, offshoring of American jobs, the US national debt and Islamic terrorism.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, 68, has held political stature as First Lady when her

husband Bill was President and subsequently in her own right as US Senator and

Secretary of State. This is her second bid for presidency as she once again takes on

the role of candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, up against United

States Senator Bernie Sanders. Her campaign highlights income equality for women,

family issues and supports pre-kindergarten, college affordability and an economic

clawback proposal for companies that keep jobs and headquarters within America

and also those who share their profits with employees.

The final Election takes place November 8th 2016.

Remember crisps are chips and chips are fries, and it is custom to tip the bartender

($1 per drink).

You would do well to learn at least the basic rules of baseball, hockey, American

football and basketball and it is also handy to know how you like your eggs cooked.

Forget your British politeness for a moment and hail your taxi with determination.

When you are shopping be mindful that the price on the tag is not the price – sales

tax will in most cases be added on when you reach the checkout.

And work that British accent and sense of humour that the Americans love!
