General Maintenance Information

The required Scheduled Maintenance Serviceslisted in this booklet are considered essential tothe proper operation, safety and performance ofyour Ford Motor Company vehicle. We

recommend that you also p erform the OwnerMaintenance Checks listed. These services arematters of day-to-day care that are alsoimportant to the p roper operation of yourvehicle. The recomm ended lubricants, fluids andservice parts conforming to Ford Specificationsare available from your dealer.

This booklet gives you a place to record theservices that are performed on your vehicle so

that you can keep a record of wh en parts shouldbe checked or rep laced. Give your MaintenanceSchedule and Record booklet to the dealer servicemanager.

PCV Valve Replacement

The PCV valve on your vehicle is a criticalemissions component. Your dealer w ill replacethe valve at no cost at 60,000 miles(96,000 kilometers) on 3.0L engines and 100,000miles (160,000 km) on 3.8L engines except onCanada and California vehicles.

Maintenance: An investment

An investment which will pay dividends in theform of improved reliability, durability, and

resale value.

To assure the durability of your vehicle and itsemission control systems, it is necessary thatscheduled maintenance be performed at thedesignated intervals.

Ford strongly recommends the use of genuineFord replacement parts. If other than Ford orMotorcraft parts or Ford authorized

remanufactured parts are used for maintenancereplacements or for the service of componentsaffecting emission control, such non-Ford partsshould be equivalent to genuine Ford MotorCompany parts in performance and durability. Itis the ow ners responsibility to d etermine theequivalency of such parts. Please consult you rwarranty booklet for complete warrantyinformation.

Wheel Lug Nuts

Wheel lug nuts m ust be retightened to proper

torque specifications at 500 miles/ 800 km ofnew vehicle operation. Proper torquespecifications are provided in your OwnerGuide. Also retighten to proper torquespecification at 500 miles/ 800 km after (1) anywheel change or (2) any other time the wheellug nuts have been loosened.

Follow the Normal Schedule for most everydaydriving conditions.

Severe DutySchedule

Follow the Severe Duty Schedule if your drivinghabits FREQUENTLY include one or m ore of thefollowing conditions:

uTowing a trailer.

uOperating in severe dust conditions.

uExtensive idling, such as police, taxi ordoor-to-door delivery service.

uShort trips of less than 10 miles (16 km)when outside temperatures remain below 0F(-18C).

30 Owner Maintenance Checks

ChecksThe following lists are vehicle checks andinspections that should be performed by theowner or qualified service technician at th efrequencies indicated to h elp ensu re safe,dependable operation of your vehicle.

Any adverse conditions should be brought to theattention of your dealer or qualified servicetechnician for service advice as soon as possible.

These Owner Maintenance Checks are generallynot covered by warranties and you may becharged for labor, parts and lubricants used.

When You Stop for Fuel:

uCheck the engine oil level.

uCheck coolant level in coolant recovery bottle.

uCheck the wind shield w asher fluid level.

uLook for low or under-inflated tires.

While Operating Your Vehicle:

uNote any changes in the sound of the exhaustor any smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.

uCheck for vibrations in the steering w heel.Notice any increased steering effort orlooseness in the steering w heel, or change inits straight-ahead position.

uNotice if you r vehicle constantly turnsslightly or pulls to one side when travelingon smooth, level road.

uWhen stopping, listen and check for strangesounds, pulling to one side, increased brakepedal travel or hard-to-push brake pedal.

u If any slipping or changes in the operation ofyour transaxle occurs, check the transaxlefluid level.

uCheck automatic transaxle P (Park) function.

uCheck parking brake.

uCheck for fluid leaks un der your vehicle(water dripping from the air conditioning

system after use is normal).

At Least Monthly:

uCheck coolant level in the coolant recoveryreservoir.

uCheck th e op eration of all exterior lamps,including the brakelamps, turn signals andhazard warning flashers.

At Least Twice a Year (i.e., every Springand Fall):

uCheck radiator, heater and air conditioninghoses for leaks or damage.

uCheck windshield washer spray and wiperoperation. Clean wiper blades with cleancloth dampened with washer fluid.

uCheck headlamp alignment.

u Inspect halfshaft d ust boots.

uCheck mu ffler, exhaust pipes, shields andclamps.

uCheck the lap-shoulder belts for wear andfunction.

uCheck air pressure in spare tire.

uCheck for worn tires and loose wheel lug

nuts.

uClean body and door d rain holes.

uLubricate door hinges and checks, and hoodhinges.

uLubricate door and hood locks and latches.

uLubricate door rubber weatherstrips.

uCheck th e air conditioning system before thewarm weather season.

uCheck th e p ower steering fluid level.

u Inspect and lubricate au tomatic transaxlelinkage and controls.

uClean battery and terminals, check electrolytelevel on low m aintenance (auxiliary andreplacement) batteries.
