I hate it when I miss a Lunch and Learn! I’m just too busy to get my
hours! I can’t figure out how to get on those meetings!
Don’t worry the solution is here! We now have our very own
YouTube channel. We have recorded the last few presentations and
uploaded them. You can now watch them from your smartphone or
home computer any time you would like! Kay recently sent out the link.
If you Subscribe to our channel, you will receive a notice every time we
upload new content. These videos can be used for continuing education
hours.
I also shared with everyone the addition of our new project garden and St. Andrews Church located about 200ft from the AgriLife building in Seguin.
At this time, we have our garden coordinator Caye Powada who will be organizing this project and coordinating our efforts.
The garden is already off to a good start. There are some good beds with plenty of room to expand. In no time at all, we can have it looking spectacular.
In other news- The board is the planning stage for next year's budget and is looking for all project fund requests. Carol Calentine will be in contact with all coordinators to communicate our needs and deadlines.
Please, Please, please remember to log your hours!!! I know many have done things that we have not seen recorded.
Thank you, everyone, Jerry

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to share with you some exciting news. This week the board accepted a
new project garden. This garden is located about 200 feet from the AgriLife building in Seguin at St. Andrews Church. Many of you have seen this as you’ve left meetings or classes. The benefits this garden will have to our organization are numerous.
The focus for this garden will be low water plants both natives and Texas superstar
plants. This can be a highlight garden for us! I’m excited about the proximity to our master gardener course. Students will be able to come to class early or stay late to work in the garden. We will also be able to harvest cuttings for the propagation class or even conduct a class or two at this location.
In addition to the benefits to the class, we will be able to utilize the area for plant sales
and other educational opportunities. The garden is already off to a good start. There are some good beds with plenty of room
to expand. In no time at all, we can have it looking spectacular. I’m including a few pictures in case you haven’t been there. ( On the next page.) I’d be
happy to grab my mask and meet anyone interested down in the garden to talk about it. One good thing about planting ornamentals and not vegetables, it will not require as much attention once established. If this interests you, please let me know. If you would like to go to work, we have plenty of tasks that can be completed on your own and you can do them on your own time. You should be able to work and stay distanced from anyone.
I have lost a little sleep over this one because I can’t help but think about the
opportunities. I hope a few of you will get as excited as I am. We can use your help.
Thank you, Jerry

New YouTube Channel
Getting volunteer hours and continuing education hours has been
challenging for many of our GCMG members. Our board members
came up with the wonderful idea of combining hours this year to help
folks out, but it has still been difficult.
Happily, we have great news if you need continuing education
hours. Jerry McNulty and my husband, Frank Rippel, worked hard to
create a YouTube Channel for the Guadalupe County Master
Gardeners! You may now view recorded lectures and lunch & learns
presented by our organization at https://www.youtube.com/channel/
UCGCMq480CKbLSKER9_zz9vg/videos
View for free at any time that is convenient for you. The GCMG
channel is kid-friendly certified. Enjoy!

Hello all! With the fall garden season fast approaching our Facebook Page has become a popular
place for exchanging ideas and motivating each other to get those gardens prepped and planted.
Planting vegetables has become very popular this year and I’m happy to report that several of our
Guadalupe County Master Gardeners are doing a superb job at helping the
public with first time gardening questions, problem pests, and plant
management. Gold stars to all those answering questions and helping our
fellow gardeners.
The top 5 contributors for the GCMG Page this month are:
Robert Cox
Peggy Jones
Kim Tessanne
William Nodine
Jerry McNulty
Many of our FB Page members are not Master Gardeners, these folks have been very grateful for
the help received from MG volunteers, like you, answering questions and giving suggestions. Thank you!
It’s amazing how many things are blooming in the heat of summer. For instance, Robert Cox took
some amazing photos of flowers at his house and at the Big Red Barn, thanks, Bob! At the Polley
Mansion, things are looking lovely in videos and pictures captured by Robin Muschalek, looking good
Robin! Kim Tessanne also got some wonderful shots of things blooming around her house, you’re doing
a great job, Kim! Flowers always brighten everyone’s day and we all appreciate your efforts.
Time to get involved everyone, we would love to see your flowers and gardens, or what you’re
doing to prep your garden beds for fall planting, show us your photos, and make us all smile, your shares
will be much appreciated.
Join us on Facebook! You too can share your photos, ideas, comments, questions, events, and
articles - all through our Facebook Group. It’s easy to join. All you need to do is log into Facebook and in
the search box type “Guadalupe County Master Gardeners,” the Group will show up, click on it and
request to join, you are guaranteed to be approved. Still need help joining. Give me a call at
(830) 379-7203 or e-mail me at [email protected] and I’d be happy to walk you through the
procedure for joining the group or even how to create your new account for Facebook, all questions are
welcome, and to all the FB Group members, keep those photos, questions, links, and advice coming. We
all enjoy the posts. Thank you all for sharing!

The details of the Horticulture Division Competition for this year’s Guadalupe County Fair are
nearly complete! Rules for the virtual horticulture entries and how to enter are included below. All
the rules, as in past years, are the same. The only difference is that it is all going to be done virtually.
We will be using e-mails, USPS hard copy mail, and Facebook to make this event happen. Photos
instead of the real horticulture entry, but nearly everything else will be the same. Rules for entry and
entry forms will be available at the Agri-life Extension Office, 210 E. Live Oak, Seguin, and at my store,
4037 Stockdale Hwy., Seguin during regular business hours.
You may also request an entry form thru e-mail at [email protected], or by mail. Spread the word! This free event is open to the public and the ribbons to be won are REAL, ribbons will be handed out or mailed at the end of the competition. Get your produce ready, take a photo, and get your entry/entries turned in as described in the following rules and submitted anytime between September 10th -26th, 2020. A printable copy of the rules and the entry form can also be retrieved at https://www.renshirts.com/AMG/2020VHC/
More good news! The Guadalupe County Fair Raffle Tickets for the 137th Fair are now available.
There are some great prizes to be won, you need not be present to win, and tickets are only $5.00
each! Proceeds help with Rodeo Queen Scholarships and are one of the events helping to keep our
County Fair’s consecutive annual event status. A partial list of prizes is below, our community has
been VERY generous. Come to 4037 Stockdale Hwy., Seguin and get your raffle tickets now!

The 2020 Guadalupe County Fair is greatly reduced this year due to health concerns during the Covid Virus Pandemic. Most

will be held virtually. The Horticulture Division Competition will be held individually and virtually as explained below. The
Guadalupe County Master Gardeners, in partnership with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, is responsible for the
Horticulture Division of the Guadalupe County Fair. This year’s virtual version will take place using a combination of e-mails,
hard copy photos & forms, US Postal mail, and pick-up/drop-off hard copy at the address listed below. As this is a new, one
time venture, questions will be address as they arise. Please call (830) 379-7203 during normal business hours 8:00 am – 4:30
pm, Monday – Saturday, or e-mail questions to: [email protected]
Guadalupe County Master Gardeners are a non-profit organization dedicated to providing horticultural information and education to the public. As a non-
profit, the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners rely on volunteers and community partners to support our mission. For more inf ormation on the Texas A&M

Judging: Each exhibit will be judged by commercial standards. Uniform size, color, maturity, & overall quality are important in
choosing your entry. Large size & unusual shape do not represent quality produce & will therefore not meet the commercial
standard used for judging. When an entry calls for a certain number of items (i.e. for jalapeno pepper, you must have 6
peppers for a legal entry), try to have the multiple items for that entry match as closely in size & color as possible. All judge’s
decisions are final.
Premiums: Each class in Adult & Youth Divisions will be judged & awarded 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. Standard blue, red, & white
ribbons. Each Department in Adult & Youth Divisions will be awarded a Division Champion Tri-Color Rosette Ribbon. The
Horticulture Division will award one Overall Grand Champion & one Overall Reserve Grand Champion (runner up) in both Adult

Pink Rosette Ribbon. All winners ribbons will be available for pick up at 4037 Stockdale Hwy., Seguin, TX, or upon request, be
mailed through USPS mail after all judging is complete and winners have been selected.
Horticulture items accepted for judging in 2020: Entrants please pay attention to the types of items and the number of items
needed for each entry/exhibit. All photos will be featured, anonymously, on the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners
Facebook Page. Because of the virtual nature of the competition this year (2020), some divisions may have fewer items listed
than in previous years. If you have questions about your entry, please call April Rippel, GCMG, at (830) 379-7203 during regular
business hours, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Saturday. Or Email questions to [email protected]

RV Show and Off-roading
Quartzsite, AZ
There is a very small town in Arizona, about 17 miles east of Blythe, CA named Quartzsite. This little town grows to more than a million RVs (or so the count goes) every January. The town is surrounded by BLM land (Bureau of Land Management) and for a small fee one can purchase a permit to boondock or dry camp for months in the desert. The town is also populated with many RV parks. We do dry camp for short periods, but since we were going to be there for a month, we opted for an RV park within walking distance to all the action.
There is something for everyone: a 2-week RV show which has the latest must-haves for
your RV, toys for your grandchildren, jewelry, cookware, knives, clothes, and much more. There are gem shows, rock shows, flea markets, carnival food stands, yard art, rugs, and if you are looking for something you didn’t know you needed but once you see it you must have it—it can be found there!
We have made it to this place twice. It is said that you either love it or hate it. I enjoyed our
stays both times. Both times we met with friends and had many evenings under the stars and around a campfire sharing information on trips taken and planned, discussing RV problems and fixes, and catching up on family members and friends not there.
We also like to drive the road not taken by many, which there are many in the desert. We try
to be sure we have cell service and do not go too far off the beaten path. The desert is a beautiful place and is always very peaceful. We were hoping to go January 2021 but will put off till 2022.
