The inaugural function was held on Saturday, 24 th September 2011. To participate in this workshop, 150 faculty members from more than 50 Engineering colleges affiliated to GTU across the state had registered for the Workshop. The inaugural session was begin with Saraswativandana, lamp lighting. Dr G.P. Vadodaria, Registrar of GTU delivered the welcome speech. He emphasized that GTU has set target to file at least 2,000 patents by the end of June-2012 and to do so GTU has number of plans to sensitize all research faculty members in the field of IPR and Patent. Dr. Manish A. Rachchh, the Program Coordinator gave an introductory speech and explained the objectives of the workshop. Dr. Narottam Sahu, Senior Scientist, Science City appreciated the efforts of GTU for spreading awareness about IPR among the faculty members and gave an assurance on behalf of GUJCOST to provide all kind of support in future activities too. Guest of Honor, Prof. M. N. Patel appreciated the efforts of GTU for arranging such kind of innovative workshop for the faculty members and also urged that Professors should be proficient in their subject and have to strive hard to make their class live and interactive. The Honourable Vice chancellor of GTU, Dr. Akshai Aggarwal explained in detail about the GTU objectives to promote and nurture the innovation at institute level so that each and every student of GTU can be employable. He mentioned that IPR and Patents will not generate only prestige to individual scientist, but it will also generate revenue for the researchers. He mentioned that, GTU had organized such kind of workshop successfully for Pharmacy faculty on 3 rd and 4th of September 2011. While discussing the Final Year projects of students, he said that GTU Innovation Council had linked up nearly 50,000 students of BE and Diploma Engg with industries. The students had finalized Industry Defined Project (IDPs) for their Final Year projects. The students were supposed to develop an innovative product or process, anchored in the needs of the industries or our society. He said that when the students were able to crack the

Gujarat Technological University organized two days workshop on “Patenting in Engineering”

at Science city, Ahmadabad. The inaugural function was held on Saturday, 24th

problems and were able to find a solution, the need for protection of IPR for both the industry

and the student would arise. Hence the engineering faculty must be trained to understand the

concept of IPR and Patenting, so that Patent application may be filed by June 2012. He

highlighted the agenda of GTU Innovation Council to form virtual Sectoral Innovation Councils

in different domains of engineering. He also discussed about the plans of GTU for establishing

an IPR cell by February-2012. The cell will develop an equitable and fair policy for IPR at the

University level and will facilitate the associated SMEs, the faculty and the research students to

draft and file their patent applications. At the end of the inaugural program, Mr. Hiranmay

Mahanta gave a vote of thanks.

The scientific sessions of 24th

September 2011 began with Dr. Manish Rachchh, Head (PG), S. J.

Thakkar Pharmacy College, Rajkot. He gave an idea about different forms of IPR and how

academic researcher could go ahead to protect their IP. Mr. Padmin Buch, Director, GITCO,

Ahmedabad discussed the patent scenario in engineering industries. Prof. Manish Kumar,

Associate Professor, Department of Production and Industrial Engineering, JNV University,

Jodhpur discussed Patentable Subject Matter in Engineering. Mr. Kirti Patel, Chief Executive

Officer, IPCalculus, Surat informed about the IPR perspective in ICT Industry. Mr. Anil Pandey,

Honorary Consultant IPR, NIF and SRISTI, Ahmedabad gave a learned talk on creativity at

grassroot level and IP protection done by such grassroot innovators with the help of NIF.

On Sunday, 25th

September 2011, the scientific sessions began with the speech of Dr. Manish

Rachchh, who discussed about Drafting & Filing of Patents in India. He described the different

embodiments in any patent application followed by different types of filing procedure available

including e-filing. Miss Nilam Gadani, Patent Attorney, H. K. Acharya & Company, Ahmedabad

took a session on practical aspects of claim drafting with examples of engineering invention. Dr.

Kishore Sreenivasan, Program Director, GIIP Bangalore gave a talk on objectives and different

types of Patent Searches & Patent Landscape methodology. Ms. Yogita Parab, Partner,

Patonomics Group, Mumbai discussed about Objectivity & Reliability in Quality in Patent Life-

Cycle. She illustrated how to go ahead in R&D work, so that the chances of generating strong

patents can be increased. Lastly Mr. Dinesh Jotwani, President, NBAI, Pune gave a practical

overview of how to commercialize the patent and generate revenue out of it and demonstrated

the way from Saraswati to Laxmi.

On both the days after the scientific sessions, panel discussions were held in which all the

participants actively participated. On the second day, a self evaluation quiz was organized for all

the participants to check their level of understanding and the faculty who secured highest mark

was given a gift by GTU.

At the end of the workshop at the valedictory session, Dr. Manish A. Rachchh summarized the

proceedings of the two days of workshop. Dr. G.P. Vadodaria, Registrar of GTU expressed the

hope that faculties would have taken full advantage of all the resource persons. Three

participating faculties gave their feed back and mentioned that this was a unique program. They

congratulated GTU and the organizing committee for their wonderful event management. They

also assured Dr. Vadodaria that, they would try to file maximum number of Patents from their

academic research projects. Mr. Hiranmay Mahanta gave vote of thanks and emphasized that

each faculty member had to work as a “Change maker” on behalf of GTU Innovation Council, so

that the whole of the ecosystem could be revolutionized. The Honourable. Dr. Akshai Aggarwal

congratulated Prof. Alams Juneja, Ms. Krutika Desai and Mr. Himanshu Raval of GTU for their

untiring efforts to make this event a grand success. He also appreciated the efforts of program

coordinator Dr. Manish A. Rachchh and his team which includes Dr. Rina Gokani, Associate

professor as well as Mr. Bipin Patel, Mr. Jay Raja and Mr. Hardik Ghelani who were M. Pharm

students of S. J. Thakkar Pharmacy College, Rajkot.
