GTU Innovation Council organized Two days workshop on “Patenting in Engineering” on 24th and 25th September 2011 at Science City, Ahmadabad
Gujarat Technological University organized two days workshop on “Patenting in Engineering”
at Science city, Ahmadabad. The inaugural function was held on Saturday, 24th
September
2011. To participate in this workshop, 150 faculty members from more than 50 Engineering
colleges affiliated to GTU across the state had registered for the Workshop.

Registrar of GTU delivered the welcome speech. He emphasized that GTU has set target to file
at least 2,000 patents by the end of June-2012 and to do so GTU has number of plans to sensitize
all research faculty members in the field of IPR and Patent. Dr. Manish A. Rachchh, the Program
Coordinator gave an introductory speech and explained the objectives of the workshop. Dr.
Narottam Sahu, Senior Scientist, Science City appreciated the efforts of GTU for spreading
awareness about IPR among the faculty members and gave an assurance on behalf of GUJCOST
to provide all kind of support in future activities too. Guest of Honor, Prof. M. N. Patel
appreciated the efforts of GTU for arranging such kind of innovative workshop for the faculty
members and also urged that Professors should be proficient in their subject and have to strive
hard to make their class live and interactive.
The Honourable Vice chancellor of GTU, Dr. Akshai Aggarwal explained in detail about the
GTU objectives to promote and nurture the innovation at institute level so that each and every
student of GTU can be employable. He mentioned that IPR and Patents will not generate only
prestige to individual scientist, but it will also generate revenue for the researchers. He
mentioned that, GTU had organized such kind of workshop successfully for Pharmacy faculty on
3rd
and 4th of September 2011. While discussing the Final Year projects of students, he said that
GTU Innovation Council had linked up nearly 50,000 students of BE and Diploma Engg with
industries. The students had finalized Industry Defined Project (IDPs) for their Final Year
projects. The students were supposed to develop an innovative product or process, anchored in
the needs of the industries or our society. He said that when the students were able to crack the

problems and were able to find a solution, the need for protection of IPR for both the industry
and the student would arise. Hence the engineering faculty must be trained to understand the
concept of IPR and Patenting, so that Patent application may be filed by June 2012. He
highlighted the agenda of GTU Innovation Council to form virtual Sectoral Innovation Councils
in different domains of engineering. He also discussed about the plans of GTU for establishing
an IPR cell by February-2012. The cell will develop an equitable and fair policy for IPR at the
University level and will facilitate the associated SMEs, the faculty and the research students to
draft and file their patent applications. At the end of the inaugural program, Mr. Hiranmay
