Notes:
[1] Contacts listed are not to be used for configuration module wiring. Use the contacts supplied with
the configuration module when installing configuration module wires. [2] Non-Garmin part numbers shown are not maintained by Garmin and are subject to change
without notice.
[3] For configuration module pins, ensure that the crimp tool is set to crimp 28 AWG wire (indenter setting of ‘4’).
2.2 Power Distribution
Circuit protection devices for the GTS 8XX must be push-pull manually resettable circuit breakers (e.g.
Klixon 7274 or 7277 series circuit breakers.
A single circuit breaker must be dedicated to the GTS 8XX. Do not attempt to combine more than one
unit on the same circuit breaker, unless specifically approved by the manufacturer. The GTS 8XX should
be connected to an avionics bus (non-essential bus) so that power will be supplied to the GTS 8XX when the avionics master switch is turned on.
2.3 Electrical Load Analysis
An electrical load analysis should be completed on each aircraft prior to installation in accordance with
AC 43.13-1B, Chapter 11 and recorded on FAA Form 337.
Use the following values for computation:
14 Volt Current Draw 28 Volt Current Draw LRU
Typical Maximum Typical Maximum
GTS 800 2.2 ± 0.2 A 2.6 A 1.1 ±0.2 A 1.5 A
GTS 820/850 2.7 ± 0.3 A 3.2 A 1.3 ± 0.2 A 1.6 A
NOTE
Circuits should be protected in accordance with the approved data in this document
(see Appendix C for recommended GTS 8XX LRU circuit breaker ratings) and the guidelines in AC 43.13-1B, Chapter 11, Section 4.
Page 2-2 GTS 8XX AML STC Installation Manual - Part 3 - Electrical Installation

2.4 Cabling and Wiring
Use #24 AWG or larger diameter wire for all connections unless otherwise specified. The minimum
diameter wire size for all GTS 8XX installation wiring is #24 AWG, except in the case of Aircraft Power
and Aircraft Ground and both shall be a minimum of #18 AWG. Refer to Table 2-2 for more information.
2.4.1 Electrical Bonding
Electrical equipment, antennas, supporting brackets, and racks must be electrically bonded to the
aircraft’s main structure. Refer to SAE ARP 1870 section 5 when surface preparation is required to
achieve electrical bond. The electrical bond should achieve direct current (DC) resistance less than or
equal to 2.5 milliohms to local structure to where the equipment is mounted. Compliance should be
verified by inspection using a calibrated milliohm meter. An equivalent OEM procedure may also be
substituted.
The antenna ground plane must be electrically bonded to the antenna baseplate. The electrical bond must
achieve direct current (DC) resistance less than or equal to 2.5 milliohms. Do not remove paint on outer
skin of aircraft under the footprint of the antenna baseplate unless necessary to meet bonding
requirements. The painted surface prevents corrosion and should be left intact if possible. The resistance of 2.5 milliohms can be achieved through the mounting screws which are attached to the antenna doubler.
2.4.2 Shield Termination Considerations
Shield termination at non-Garmin equipment end must be as short as possible taking into consideration
any non-Garmin equipment’s installation requirements. The shields may be connected to the metal connector backshell when the backshell is grounded to airframe chassis ground or the shield termination
may be directly connected to airframe chassis ground.
While the interconnects in Appendix C do not show intermediate connectors, all shields must have continuity at any intermediate connectors used unless otherwise specified. When shields are terminated to
the aircraft ground or metal backshell to provide this continuity, the shield drain wire must be no longer
than 3 inches, unless non-Garmin equipment requires shorter length. The termination method from section 2.4.8 may be used at these locations unless this conflicts with the requirement of Non-Garmin
equipment.
If intermediate connectors are used on an audio line, either run the shields through a pin on all intermediate connectors or terminate shield drain wires at the intermediate connector if they are grounded
to airframe. The shields between any two connectors must only be grounded at one end to prevent ground
loops. The shield must be terminated to ground at the GTS 8XX.
If a connector at the opposite end from the GTS 8XX has overbraid then any wires from this connector to
the GTS 8XX must also be overbraided. The overbraid must be terminated as close to the connector as possible taking into account any requirements imposed by the non-Garmin equipment. These additional
wires must be separately overbraided and ensure they are routed with the existing cable where possible.
2.4.3 Switch Selection and Location
Depending on display capabilities, switches may be required as part of the installation to control the GTS 8XX. A standby/operate switch as well as a self test initialize switch are required if the chosen traffic
display does not include provisions for control of this functionality. Refer to the appropriate drawing in
Appendix C for switch selection and labeling.
Both the Standby/Operate switch and the Self Test select switch must be mounted adjacent to the traffic
display easily accessible to the pilot. Both switches must be mounted within the acceptable field of view
of the pilot. Acceptable field of view is defined as 35 degrees left and right from the centerline of the control yoke in the pilot’s normal seated position and 25 degrees vertically up and 35 degrees vertically
down from horizontal.
GTS 8XX AML STC Installation Manual - Part 3 - Electrical Installation Page 2-3
Rev. 2 190-00993-05
The Traffic Advisory Acknowledge switch is used to mute TA audio. It should be mounted adjacent to
the traffic display fully accessible to the pilot. This switch can also be mounted on top of the pilot’s control yoke. The TA acknowledge switch location must not interfere with other switches or controls on
the yoke.
2.4.4 GPA 65 Cable and Wiring Requirements
The GTS 800 requires two sets of coaxial cable assemblies and the GTS 820/850 requires three sets of coaxial cable assemblies when a directional GA 58 antenna (or other Garmin approved antenna) is used
for both top and bottom. Each set consists of four coaxial cable assemblies.
Each set of four cables must be assembled using the same type of coaxial cable in order to meet phase and
attenuation matching requirements. In order for the system to operate in compliance with manufacturer
specifications, the coaxial cable assemblies must not exceed the attenuation specifications as stated in this section. If an optional low-profile antenna is installed, TNC connectors (not provided) must be installed
on the antenna end of the coaxial cables. Note that due to the cable loss requirements, the GPA 65 needs
to be mounted in close proximity to the TAS/TCAS antenna. Refer to Table 2-4 for the maximum cable
lengths for the selected coaxial cable.
Note that the GPA 65 circular connector kit (011-01365-00) comes with a bulkhead connector. It is not
necessary to ground the bulkhead connector flange to aircraft ground.
NOTE
The maximum wiring length from the GTS 8XX to the GPA 65 is 45 feet. Refer to Table 2-2
below for further information.

2.4.5.1 Coaxial Cable Assembly Instructions
The following assembly instructions apply to coaxial cable assemblies using QMA connectors specified
in Table 2-3 for use with RG-400 or RG-142 cable types:
1. Slide the heat shrink sleeve and crimp ferrule onto the cable.
2. Strip the cable to the dimensions shown in Figure 2-7.
Figure 2-7. RG-400/RG-142 Coaxial Cable Stripping Dimensions
3. Slide the center contact onto the center conductor of the cable. Ensure the center conductor of the
cable is visible through the inspection hole of the center contact and crimp using Tyco Tool 354940-1 and die assembly 220189-3, or Tyco Tool 354940-1 and die assembly 91901-1, or Tyco
Tool 69478-1.
4. Expand the shielding braid and insert the crimped center contact into the connector body until the
cable dielectric is flush with the dielectric inside the connector body. Ensure the shield braid
does not enter the connector body.

5. Slide the crimp ferrule over the shielding braid to the back of the connector body. Position the
crimp tool flush with the back of the connector body and crimp using Tyco tool 35940-1 and die
assembly 220189-3, or Tyco tool 354940-1 and die assembly 91901-1, or Tyco tool 69478-1. The crimp tool should be positioned such that a “bellmouth” (see Figure 2-8) is present in the
crimp ferrule on the coaxial cable side of the crimp after crimping.
6. Slide heat shrink sleeve to back of connector body and shrink in place. Ensure that the heat
shrink does not protrude past the connector body back end once it is shrunk into place. It is
recommended that the color-coded heat shrink tubing provided in the kit be used. Place the color-
coded band on the coaxial cable near the connector body and shrink in place.

NOTE
Use of QMA connectors other than those specified in Table 2-2 for coaxial cable assemblies fabricated by the installing agency using either M17/128-RG400 or
M17/60-RG142 coaxial cable will constitute the cable assemblies as being non-compliant
with the GTS AML STC.
2.4.5.2 Coaxial Cable Assembly Repair and Rework
In the event that an individual coaxial cable assembly requires rework, the following rules apply:
• Top or bottom GTS 800 to GA 58 (or other Garmin approved antenna) cables may be repaired with a reduction in length of 2” maximum.
• Top or bottom GTS 820/850 to GPA 65 cables may be repaired with a reduction in length of 2”
maximum.
• GPA 65 to GA 58 (or other Garmin approved antenna) cables (on GTS 820/850 systems only) must be replaced if repair is required because connector replacement would cause the matched
cable length requirement of 0.25” to be exceeded.
Refer to Table 2-3 for recommended maximum cable assembly lengths for cable assemblies fabricated by the installer.
NOTE
If rework of a coaxial cable assembly is required, the reworked cable length must still
meet the length tolerance requirements specified in Table 2-5.

2.4.6 Wiring Harness
Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors. The installer supplies and fabricates all of
the cables.
Construct the wiring harness according to the information contained in this and the following sections.
Cable lengths will vary depending upon installation. Strip all wires going to the connectors 0.17”. Insert
the wire into the pin and crimp with one of the recommended (or equivalent) crimping tools. Insert the pin into the connector housing location as specified by the interconnect drawing in Appendix B. Verify that
the pin is properly engaged into the connector by gently tugging on the wire. Route and secure the cable
runs from the GTS 8XX away from sources of electrical noise.
Appendix B provides the pinout information for the GTS 8XX. Required connectors and associated
hardware are supplied with the connector kits. See Appendix C for interconnect wiring diagrams.
CAUTION
Check wiring connections for errors before connecting the cables to the LRUs. Incorrect
wiring could cause component damage.

Notes:
1. Non-Garmin part numbers shown are not maintained by Garmin and consequently are subject to change without notice.
2. Extracting a contact used for #18 AWG requires that the wire barrel be cut off from the
contact. It may also be necessary to push the pin out from the face of the connector when using an extractor due to the absence of the wire. A new contact must be used when reassembling
the connector.
3. Contacts for #16 AWG and Contact Crimp Tooling: Contact Garmin for information regarding contacts and contact crimp tooling. Note 2 also applies.
4. Alternate Contacts for Use With #18 AWG: As an alternative to the Positronic contacts listed, and provided in the installation kit, if the need arises the installer may use contacts made by
ITT Cannon under P/N 031-1007-001. The particular contact is not compatible with the
Daniels MFG K774, Positronics 9502-11 or Amphenol 9502-11 positioners. Only use
postioner part numbers Daniels MFG K250, ITT Cannon 980-0005-722 and Astro 616245.
2.4.7 QMA Connector Insertion and Removal
To engage the QMA connectors, use the outer sleeve of the QMA plug to align the connectors and insert
the plug into the jack until it snaps into place. There will be an audible snap when the connectors are fully engaged. Refer to the figure below. No tools are required for the insertion of a QMA plug onto a QMA
jack.
Engage
Outer Sleeve
Figure 2-10. Engaging QMA Connectors
To disengage the QMA connectors, pull back firmly on the outer sleeve of the QMA plug away from the
jack connector (refer to the figure below.) This will disengage the locking mechanism that secures the plug connector to the jack connector. Pulling on or disengaging the QMA connectors in any other way is
not recommended and may cause damage to both the connectors and coaxial cable.
CAUTION
Do not pull on the cable when removing the QMA plug from the jack.

2.4.8.1 Backshell Assembly Procedure
NOTE
For the following steps please refer to Figure 2-13. (Figure references are in parenthesis)
1. The appropriate number of Jackscrew Backshells will be included in the particular LRU
connector kit.
Table 2-12. Shielded Cable Preparations for Garmin Connectors
Backshell Size
Number of Pins
Std/HD
Float Min
(inches)
Float Max(inches)

(inches)
Window Max

Ideal Window(inches)
4 37/62 1.5 2.5 2.0 3.0 5.5 4.5
5 50/78 1.5 2.5 2.0 3.0 5.5 4.5
2. At one end of a shielded cable (2) measure a distance between “Window Min” to “Window Max”
and cut a window (max size 0.35”) in the jacket to expose the shield as shown in Figure 2-12.
Use caution when cutting the jacket to avoid damaging the individual braids of the shield. When dealing with a densely populated connector with many cables, it may prove beneficial to stagger
the windows throughout the “Window Min” to “Window Max” range. If staggering is not needed
the “Ideal Window” length is recommended.
NOTE
The window cut should be accomplished with either coaxial cable strippers, thermal
strippers, or a sharp razor blade.
3. Connect a Flat Braid (4) to the shield exposed through the window of the prepared cable
assembly (2) from step 2. The Flat Braid should go out the front of the termination towards the connector. It is not permitted to exit the rear of the termination and loop back towards the
connector (see Figure 2-12). Make this connection using an approved shield termination technique.
NOTE
Refer to AC 43.13-1B Chapter 11, Section 8 (Wiring Installation Inspection
Requirements) for termination techniques.
Preferred Method:
Slide a solder sleeve (3) onto the prepared cable assembly (2) and connect the Flat Braid (4) to the shield
using a heat gun approved for use with solder sleeves. It may prove beneficial to use a solder sleeve with a pre-installed Flat Braid versus having to cut a length of Flat Braid to be used. The chosen size of solder
sleeve must accommodate both the number of conductors present in the cable and the Flat Braid (4) to be
attached.
GTS 8XX AML STC Installation Manual - Part 3 - Electrical Installation Page 2-21
Rev. 2 190-00993-05
Solder Sleeves with pre-installed Flat Braid
A preferred solder sleeve would be the Raychem S03 Series with the thermochromic temperature indicator (S03-02-R-9035-100, S03-03-R-9035-100, S03-04-R-9035-100). These solder sleeves come
with a pre-installed braid and effectively take the place of items 3 and 4. For detailed instructions on
product use, refer to Raychem installation procedure.
Individual Solder Sleeves And Flat Braid
Secondary Method:
Solder a Flat Braid (4) to the shield exposed through the window of the prepared cable assembly (2). Ensure a solid electrical connection through the use of acceptable soldering practices. Use care to avoid
applying excessive heat that burns through the insulation of the center conductors and shorts the shield to the signal wire. Slide a minimum 0.75 inches of Teflon heat shrinkable tubing (3) onto the prepared wire
assembly and shrink using a heat gun. The chosen size of heat shrinkage tubing must accommodate both
the number of conductors present in the cable and the Flat Braid (4) to be attached.
Reference the following MIL-Spec for Teflon heat shrinkable tubing (M23053/5-X-Y).
4. At the same end of the shielded cable (2) and ahead of the previous shield termination, strip back
“Float Min” to “Float Max” (See Table 2-12) length of jacket and shield to expose the insulated center conductors (see Figure 2-12). The “Ideal Float” length may be best to build optimally.
Preferred Method:
The jacket and shield should be cut off at the same point so no shield is exposed. Slide 0.75 inches minimum of Teflon heat shrinkable tubing (5) onto the cable and use a heat gun to shrink the tubing. The
chosen size of heat shrinkage tubing must accommodate the number of conductors present in the cable.
5. Strip back approximately 0.17 inches of insulation from each wire of the shielded cable (2) and
crimp a contact (6) to each conductor. It is the responsibility of the installer to determine the
proper length of insulation to be removed. Wire must be visible in the inspection hole after crimping and the insulation must be 1/64 – 1/32 inches from the end of the contact as shown in
Figure 2-14.
Figure 2-14. Insulation/Contact Clearance
6. Insert newly crimped pins and wires into the appropriate connector housing location as specified
by the installation wiring diagrams.
Page 2-22 GTS 8XX AML STC Installation Manual - Part 3 - Electrical Installation
190-00993-05 Rev. 2
7. Cut the Flat Braid (4) to a length that, with the addition of a ring terminal, will reach one of the
tapped holes of the Jackscrew backshell (1). An appropriate amount of excess length without looping should be given to the Flat Braid (4) to allow it to freely move with the wire bundle.
NOTE
Position the window splice to accommodate a Flat Braid (4) length of no more than 3
inches.
8. Guidelines for terminating the newly cutoff Flat Braid(s) (4) with insulated ring terminals (7):
• Each tapped hole on the Jackscrew Backshell (1) may accommodate only two ring terminals
(7).
• It is preferred that only two Flat Braids (4) be terminated per ring terminal. Two Flat Braids
per ring terminal will necessitate the use of a Ring terminal, #8, insulated, 14-16 AWG (MS25036-153).
• If only a single Flat Braid is left or if only a single Flat Braid is needed for this connector a
Ring terminal, #8, insulated, 18-22 AWG (MS25036-149) can accommodate this single Flat Braid.
• If more braids exist for this connector than two per ring terminal, it is permissible to
terminate three braids per ring terminal. This will necessitate the use of a Ring terminal, #8,
insulated, 10-12 AWG (MS25036-156).
9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 as needed for the remaining shielded cables.
10. Terminate the ring terminals to the Jackscrew Backshell (1) by placing items on the Pan Head Screw (8) in the following order: Split Washer (9), Flat Washer (10) first Ring Terminal, second
Ring Terminal (if needed) before finally inserting the screw into the tapped holes on the
Jackscrew Backshell. Do not violate the guidelines presented in Step 8 regarding ring terminals.
11. It is recommended to wrap the cable bundle with Silicone Fusion Tape (11) (GPN: 249-00114-00
or a similar version) at the point where the backshell clamp and cast housing will contact the
cable bundle.
NOTE
Choosing to use this tape is the discretion of the installer.
12. Place the smooth side of the backshell clamp (12) across the cable bundle and secure using the
three screws (13). Warning: Placing the grooved side of the clamp across the cable bundle may risk damage to wires.
13. Attach the cover (14) to the backshell (1) using the two screws (15).
2.4.8.2 Configuration Module Assembly
To assemble the configuration module, refer to Figure 2-16 (Figure references are in parenthesis) and complete the following steps:
1. Strip back approximately 0.17 inches of insulation from each wire of the four conductor wire
harness (3) and crimp either a pin (4) or a socket (9) to each conductor. It is the responsibility of the installer to determine the proper length of insulation to be removed. Wire must be visible in
the inspection hole after crimping and the insulation must be 1/64 – 1/32 inches from the end of
the contact as shown in Figure 2-15.
2. Insert newly crimped pins (or sockets) and wires (3 and 4) into the appropriate connector housing
(5) location as specified by the installation specific wiring diagram
GTS 8XX AML STC Installation Manual - Part 3 - Electrical Installation Page 2-23
Rev. 2 190-00993-05
3. Attach the module (1) to backshell (6) using screw (10).
4. Plug the four conductor wire harness (3) into the connector on the module (1).
5. Orient the connector housing (5) so that the inserted four conductor wire harness (3) is on the
same side of the backshell (6) as the module (1).
6. Attach cover (7) to backshell (6) using screws (8).
