Refresh, reorganize & rejuvenateHome organization has become a national obsession.

It’s a skill that most people take for granted if they have it, butfor those of us who don’t, there is help. Many new businesses have emerged in the last decade to help us organize – home stagers helppurge, storage companies help store, professional organizers help usmake sense of clutter, and closet organization companies help us redesign our closet spaces.

In this day and age, when simply organizing our time is a challenge, everything truly does need a proper place – having less is really more.

Regardless of your organization skills, the April issue of Home Decor and Renovations will help guide you to a clutter-free existence and help you rejuvenate.

You’ll discover a little goes a long way when it comes to getting rid of unused items and making sure you store seasonal items sooner rather than later. Whether it’s an out-of-control junk drawer, a garage full of unpacked boxes or a whole house overhaul that’s required, spring cleaning ranks high on the to-do lists of many of us. Re-organization should be done before the cleaning process begins or during as the need arises. My tip, rather than doing it all at once, take it one step at a time. If one of your kitchen cupboards is a nightmare, take the time while the rice cooks to pitch or purge. You will love the results and it will likely inspire you to tackle a drawer or two next time.

In this issue we have a ton of tips and advice on refreshing and updating your home for the spring, as well as some great deals and news on the latest trends and products. We always look forward to your feedback, so please write to us!

Renovation kick-staRtI picked up the March copy of Home Decor and Renovations yesterday, as I do every month and was thrilled to see your article on “Bathroom Renos for Every Budget”. It couldn’t have come at a better time because I have been thinking about renovating mine for a while. The

“TOP 10 Tips” by Yanic Simard also gave me a good start.

Thanks for kick-starting my imagination and thanks for such a wonderful magazine. I look forward to the next issue.

Dear HD&R:

It’s so great to find a localized magazine that focuses on what I love most - decorating and renovating! I always like to visit local shops since it’s very often that’s where you find the most unique items. The difficult part is finding them. The Toronto area has so many unique places and not all of them are online yet either.

Thank you for a great resource.

Heather simmons

Foot WaRming eDition This month’s issue about bathroom renovations and decorations is awesome. I especially enjoyed reading about the top 10 tips that Yanic Simard has gifted us with. I think it is important to choose a durable flooring in the bathroom because the ones we had in our old home was neither tile or stone, so after eight years it started to tear apart.

Also I never knew about the existence of heated floors. My bathroom and bedroom is above the garage so whenever winter comes both of these rooms get really chilly. It’ll be a really nice treat for my feet if I get those heated floors. There’s always something new to learn each day.

Retail giants RONA and IKEA are raising funds to improve the lives of children and youth around the world. Locally, proceeds from RONA’s Teddy Bear campaign raised close to $30,000 for Children’s Aid Foundation throughout the 2011 holiday season to help at-risk Ontario youth stay in school. While overseas, the IKEA Foundation, in support of UNICEF and Save the Children, donates 1 euro for each soft toy sold in over 300 stores from November 1 to December 31. This year Canadian consumers contributed more than $450,000—the most raised in Canada ever since the campaign started in 2003. Go team Canada! And thank you to these amazing retailers that make the world a better place for youth.

QUICKTIPS

HOW TO KEEP THE HOUSE TIDY - IN JUST A FEW

minutes a day. There are two tricks you can use to keep your house neat with little effort: Scan and Grab: Any time you leave one room, scan it quickly to see if there’s anything that belongs in the room that you are going to (or along the way). Keep a basket at the bottom of the stairs and any time you come across something that belongs on the second floor, toss it in. At the end of the day, grab the basket on your way up. Deposit the items in the rooms where they belong right away (or first thing in the morning if you’re too tired). Be sure to take the basket back downstairs on your way down the next day. The key is to get into the habit of doing this daily so the basket doesn’t get too full, otherwise it becomes too time consuming to put everything away.

DO IT NOW AND SAVE TIME Delaying tasks actually creates more work and wastes time. Fold or hang your clothes immediately after the dryer cycle is complete and you will spend less (or no) time ironing.

Load the dishwasher (or wash the dishes) as soon as you’re done eating and you’ll spend less time rinsing, scraping and scrubbing.

SMART STORAGE You’ve probably heard the term ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. This is so true, but it’s only part of the solution. The second half of this wisdom is to keep things in a logical position. For example, keep keys by the exit door, coffee and filters in the cupboard above the coffee maker, and magazines in a basket beside the chair where you do most of your reading. Not only will this make it easier to find what you need quickly, it will also cut down on steps and save you time. Next time you are trying to find a home for something, instead of asking ‘where should I put it’, ask ‘where would I use it’.

When spring rolls around it seems to be a natural instinct to want to clean, purge and organize, and what better way to get inspired than charming products that

are smart and functional. Getting those belongings sorted is ideal for everyday living, fancy hooks and over the door storage will inspire you to keep the clutter off

Add character and wit to your space with prints, objects and images of elephants, horses, birds and owls. These are fun and playful and can be mixed in with just about any design style, from modern to traditional.

Personalize your space with art

personal way. While art can often get put on the backburner after the dust of a renovation has settled, the personalized story that art tells about a homeowner shouldn’t be forgotten. Today there are many avenues in which art can be purchased, so making your personal mark on your home might be easier – and less expensive – than you think.

The first place I go when selecting art for a client is a traditional gallery. In Toronto, Canvas and Art Interiors are my local favourites. The staff is trained to assist you in picking just the right piece for you and your space. And best of all, a gallery will often allow you to borrow the pieces for a time period to “test drive” in your home. As the art on your walls can really change the colour scheme and mood of a room, being able to see it in the context of the rest of your space makes for a stress-free investment. A visit to a gallery is also a great way to find new emerging artists, and support their work at more introductory prices.

Additionally, I love to invest in artists by commissioning custom pieces. When you commission a piece, you can work with an artist to get exactly what you want, and this has yielded gorgeous outcomes for many of my clients’ spaces. Artist Becky Simpson of RLS Studios will take a client’s photograph, enlarge it to their desired size, and through a wax transfer technique called encaustic painting, create beautiful, textured, large-scale works. The texture created through the dripping wax is truly unique. I also love working with New Brunswick-based abstract artist Matt LeBlanc, who

will take my client’s paint and furniture colours and create an abstract piece customized to their existing décor. He ships them to me in Toronto and it is always a fun surprise to see what he has come up with. Commissioning a custom piece of art is a great way to support the local art community and to ensure you have a truly one-of-a-kind piece on your walls.

Lastly, I love using personal photographs to create art. This can often be an inexpensive approach when conscious of budget. If a digital image is large enough, I will take it to a local print shop, enlarge the photo to poster size, and place it in a modern frame. With digital software it is also easy to manipulate an image to change the colours, increase the contrast, or crop for dramatic emphasis. Also, Internet sources such as canvasstock.com will take your digital file and transfer it onto a stretched canvas, giving you a gallery look without the gallery price tag.

Art doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be “you.” With the multitude of ways that art can be purchased, whether on foot or online, the perfect piece for your space is waiting to be discovered.

i recall the springs of my youth when I would hear the ladies on the street say they were

just about to start “spring cleaning.” I always wondered if that meant that they only cleaned up for guests, for Grandma or for the season. When I got to be a little older and I understood that I was going to have to move the sofa, take the beds apart, help my mother re-hang all of the drapes in the house after they had been washed and steamed, I started to really understand what spring cleaning was all about.

The idea of a purge is a great one when you consider just how much we pay for a space per square foot. It really doesn’t make sense to waste any space on something as silly as an old sewing machine that

Spring purging tradition worth keeping

hasn’t been out of the case for a number of years, or that food dehydrator – you must have been “overtired” when you called that late-night television show to place your order. In our version of spring cleaning, these are the things we have to divest our lives of. The reality is, we end up moving those things around in order to pack in the essentials. As I have said in the past, the elements of the home should be there to enhance your life. My grandfather often suggested that one should be careful about how much he owns because slowly but surely, those things end up owning you since you end up taking care of them.

Walk around the house and identify the things that you are keeping “just in case.” You will feel that much better when you have freed yourself of those extras. My rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in a year, chances are pretty good that you never will. Most of the things we keep “just in case” are not very valuable to us and could be purchased or borrowed if we find we need them one day.

That one-year rule also applies to clothes. More often than not, you have several versions of the same article of clothing that you gravitate to. If you can afford to have a closet company re-work your closets, you will not regret the expense. Or, you can do it yourself – all it takes is a bit of ingenuity, some elbow grease and a little help from someone with tools. You still likely won’t need a ball-peen hammer!

GLEN PELOSOGlen Peloso, design editor at Home Décor and Renovations and principal designer of Glen Peloso Interiors, has been designing spaces for commercial, corporate and residential clients for more than 15 years. You’ll recognize Glen as the host of such television design shows as Restaurant Makeover, Take This House & Sell It and Renovate My Wardrobe, to name a few, as well as from speaking engagements at home shows across Canada. glenpelosointeriors.com

Closet makeover: Create various levels at different heights, either 42 inches apart or 72 inches from the floor. These are known as short-hang and long-hang sections. Shelving and drawers can be any width or height, depending on if they are to hold folded items or shoes. When you are on a budget, you will likely need to forgo the drawers, which are really just shelves on rollers. If the budget allows for drawers, they make daily preparation much easier to deal with, and result in a cleaner, tidier look when you’re done.

Make sure you use all of the wall space available. The floor is generally the smallest area of the closet so use it sparingly. Now, have a look at your clothes and determine the percentage of long- and short-hang space.

The most important part of doing a closet is planning your space out effectively and then determining what you are capable of doing – sometimes hiring a professional closet installation company is the most economical way to work if your skill sets do not match your needs in the closet.

An effectively created closet can save you a bunch of money in that it saves on the wear and tear of your clothes and helps you save on dry cleaning and washing. Colour blocking your clothes also helps you to know what you own at a glance and will help you save more money when you shop; you realize that you already have seven black sweaters and likely don’t need another. You can just buy the light blue one, which is missing in your closet and be happy! When you are finished with the closet you will be so inspired by your ability to organize and purge that you will be rushing to the

basement or the garage with a plan to purge and organize even more!

When you say that you are off to do the “spring organizing” it will take the kids a few years to understand what you mean, but soon they will help and you will have passed on a great skill set! Happy cleaning. Or should I say… organizing!

AROUNDTHEHOUSE

Goodbye winter, hello spring cleaning

by SILVANA LONGO

1 The spring cleaning list can be daunting for anyone to tackle, what would you say are the essential must-do cleaning tasks and which ones can be done at a later time or throughout the year? The first must-do on the spring cleaning schedule would be to tackle inside the hall closets. Usually at this point, we are ready to put away our winter outerwear and switch them with our lighter spring jackets and coats. Take this opportunity to wipe off the shelves and floor before replacing your spring things. The closet floor can be covered in winter’s sand and salt and cobwebs may line the shelves.

Another area to address is windows and window treatments. Start by washing windows on the outside if possible, then inside. Don’t forget the window tracks. A handy tool to use is a small paint brush or a vacuum crevice tool. Finally, you can tackle the window treatments. If you have blinds or shutters, a quick tip is to use those old odd sports socks. Slip one on your hand and dust across the slats one by one, you can dampen the sock and remove any sticky smudges. Launder or dry clean any curtains or drapes, re-hang and voilà…Here Comes The Sun!

2 How important is decluttering to ensure a quality cleaning job? Have you recommended professional organization services or provided them yourself to your clients prior to cleaning their home? What do you recommend homeowners do before you arrive for the most effective cleaning results?Decluttering allows you to do a deep, thorough cleaning. If you do not declutter, you are simply limiting the areas that you can clean and are actually leaving dirt and dust behind.

The foundation of our service is based on providing a deep clean, which cannot be achieved with clutter everywhere. We do recommend that clients clear their counters, floors, and furniture tops before we arrive. If clutter is a huge issue for a client, we recommend that they use bins and baskets to help contain the items which in turn allows for easier moving so we can then clean effectively.

HD&R went to Molly Maid cleaning expert Amelia Mackie to find out best practices for a sparkling spring-ready home

34

034-035 Molly Maid_SL.indd 34 3/20/12 2:46:18 PM

Page 35: GTA Home Décor and Renovations - APR 2012

3 What are your favourite cleaning tools and products and why?My favourite cleaning tools would have to be microfibre cloths and an extendable handle duster. The cloths can be used wet or dry and in any room. They actually trap dirt and dust. They are great on mirrors and glass as they don’t leave any lint behind. The extendable duster can reach the cobwebs up high on ceilings where they gather over the winter. The duster also allows you to dust the baseboards without too much bending and stretching. It is a great tool for cobwebs and dust bunnies in tight spots like behind heavy cabinets and headboards.

My favourite product would be an all-purpose cleaner. Its name says it all…it can be used all over the house for many different surfaces. I recommend finding an environmentally friendly one that can be used on glass and mirrors.

4 How often should deep cleaning be done such as washing walls and mouldings, doors and light fixtures?I would suggest that door trims, areas around light switches and doorknobs –anywhere you see smudges and fingerprints – should be wiped weekly. Other areas like walls and light fixtures should be done during your deep cleaning session.

5 In your experience, what is the most neglected room in the house?

In my experience, there are a couple of areas that could easily be neglected. The master bedroom, for example, many people just close their door when having guests. Families with younger children find they end up with the kids in their room quite often leaving behind toys, clothes, dishes, etc. Keeping a basket or bin for each child in the master bedroom can help make cleaning easier. The children can help as well, depending on their ages, to gather and return items to the bin.

The basement is an area where laundry rooms and playrooms are generally located. These areas can easily be neglected due to their location in the home, and cobwebs love the dark dingy areas.

In the playroom, using bins and baskets not only help keep the room tidy but also allow easy moving when deep cleaning.

The laundry room can be a dumping ground for heaps of dirty clothes, mold and mildew. Wiping down appliances and floors on a weekly basis can keep this room clean and sanitized. We suggest keeping coloured or labelled baskets for each family member. As the laundering is completed, the baskets can be carried up to each bedroom and put away easily. An odds-and-ends bin is handy for lost socks, gloves, etc. Remember to sort and dispose of items not needed on a regular basis. Keep some odd socks for dusting blinds or to put on a child’s hand and encourage them to help on cleaning day, age-appropriate tasks of course.

6 Whether someone uses your services or not, how often would you recommend spring cleaning in order to minimize the extent of work? How many hours a week would you advise someone to clean their home so that it would cut down the deep cleaning required during a change of season?I would recommend deep cleaning on a seasonal basis or at least twice a year. Each season has its own culprits, from summer to winter, and seasonal cleaning rids the home of the offenders before a new season starts. Simple things such as sweeping off your door steps and keeping mats inside your doors, all work to cut down your cleaning time by keep the outside dirt out of your home.

How much time to spend per week cleaning would depend on a number of factors such as, size of home, the number of people and pets in the household. On average, a window of two to four hours on a weekly basis could cut down the deep cleaning required at the season’s end.

For more tips on scheduling daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal cleaning, check out our Molly Maid Cleaning Handbook -The Complete Guide to a Clean House.

MY FAVOURITE CLEANING TOOLS WOULD HAVE TO BE MICROFIBRE CLOTHS AND EXTENDABLE HANDLE DUSTER. THE CLOTHS CAN BE USED WET OR DRY AND IN ANY ROOM.

Q the garage is a great place to start tackling spring cleaning season. this spring, why not transform it into an extension of the home by adding a workshop, a home office or a music studio? What are some questions to ask yourself if your dream reno is doable, and how do you get started?A The Ontario Building Code does not consider the garage as “interior living space” and therefore the garage is not subject to the same construction requirements as living space. This conversion of non-living space into “finished living space” would require the construction of such things as insulation, vapour barrier, sufficient electrical outlets and switches, sufficient lighting, heating venting and air conditioning, air barrier systems, drywall and finishes, to name most. It is a further requirement that a building permit be issued for the project (those that require working drawings) and a zoning check to ensure that the conversion is permitted. If you do not feel confident in undertaking the task all by yourself, you have the option to retain an architect, engineer or a building code identification number (BCIN) licensed designer to provide you with all of the paperwork required for the project (permits in hand).

Q there never seems to be enough storage space, no matter how many closets and cupboards you have at home. What is the best way to add extra storage to a home without killing the style factor?A Fortunately, there is enough innovation in the

“storage” industry to offer a plenitude of options custom-suited to your needs, like built-in cabinetry, custom-fit shelving and pull-out drawers, to name a few. If you find that your storage needs extend beyond the aforementioned, then maybe it’s time to take a few walls down, or put some walls up! (Hey,

you can’t blame me – I’m a construction guy!)A simple renovation with thoughtful design and

storage in mind can alleviate most people’s needs. I highly recommend involving a professional interior designer who specializes in “storage” solutions at some point along the path.

Q What are your top 3 ways to spruce up the exterior of the home after a long, hard winter?A Start with the obvious and get rid of the mess. Clean your gutters, wash the windows, take care of the necessary repairs and power wash the exterior

– especially if your home has siding.Next, attack the landscaping. This could be as

simple as planting some seeds and adding mulch or as expansive as a complete overhaul. It all depends on the current state of the yard, your imagination and how much time and effort you’re willing to invest. Gorgeous lawns and gardens don’t happen by accident, but they are universally admired. The landscaping doesn’t have to be grand, but it does have to be well-maintained and tidy. And one thing is for sure – nobody wants to see another plastic pink flamingo on anyone’s lawn!

Finally, it may be time to paint. Three complementing colours are pretty much par for the course for the exterior of your home. With too many colour variations and it gets busy and confusing, not enough colour and you risk looking boring. Try to match the trim colour to that of your roof for a nice finishing touch.

IN THIS COLUMN, I’M GOING TO LET YOU IN ON AN INDUSTRY SECRET.

Even though we’re a long way from fall – the renovation industry’s busiest season – there’s never been a better time to start looking for a contractor to finally tackle that renovation you’ve been putting off for a couple of years now.

We’ve all been guilty of this – putting off the very important task of seeking out a reputable renovator until a mere few weeks prior to renovation season, only to find out that your city’s most sought-after contractor’s calendar is booked for the rest of the year. So why not make 2012 different?

Much like a home purchase, major renovations require considerable prep work which involves some time-consuming elements such as obtaining permits or calculating budgets. In some instances, you may require the help of an architect to redesign your basement. In others, a building permit to add another floor to your detached home. These are all matters that need to be addressed in advance, and a professional contractor can be of tremendous help when it comes to planning your renovation in a timely fashion.

A professional renovator can help you identify any legal actions required by your renovation, or recommend specialists such as architects or designers that will take care of the prep work in the early stages of your renovation, avoiding any delays.

For this, of course, you will need to do your research and seek out a professional contractor, and April is a good time to start. Much like a trendy restaurant or a popular nightclub, a good renovator must be booked way in advance. Renovating your home is a big financial investment, so putting all that money into the hands of someone you called up the first week of September is a risky move.

A good place to start your search is renomark.ca – home to the national RenoMark program and a database of professional renovators in 32 markets across seven provinces. Now in its 11th year, RenoMark has rapidly grown to be a highly respected brand of professional renovators who abide by a national Code of Ethics, as well as a renovation-specific Code of Conduct. The

latter specifies that the contractor will provide the homeowner with a detailed, written contract, offer a minimum two-year warranty, carry a minimum $2 million in liability insurance and hold all applicable licences and certificates.

Simply visit renomark.ca to see if a Renomark program is administered in your geographical area, then use the “Find a Renovator” tool.

Do your research by calling these renovators and requesting examples of past work, referrals or other ways they can demonstrate their professionalism and earn your business, such as recent awards or other recognitions. You can also take advantage of the program’s social media presence by seeking out the official Facebook page at facebook.com/renomark or twitter handle at twitter.com/renomark_ca.

When it comes to a renovation, planning ahead can mean the difference between a solid investment and an expensive mistake, but it all starts with planning ahead.

planning is the secret to a successful renovation
