GT-DOS: Reducing the cost of H2S Removal and Sulfur Recovery by Direct Oxidation to SulfurH2S removal and sulfur recovery from streams with “medium” amounts of sulfur have historically been challenges for the industry. At sulfur recovery rates of less than 0.1 ton/day, solid and liquid scavengers and sorbents are cost-e ective and preferred by the industry. At sulfur recovery rates of over 100 ton/day, “modi ed Claus” processes are generally favored. In the intermediate range, direct treatment with aqueous iron liquid redox or bacteria based “bio-desulfurization” processes may be used. However, these processes have challenges at higher operating pressures and in the presence of heavy hydrocarbons, in addition to operations and maintenance issues relating to solid precipitation. ese processes also have high operating cost and the sulfur that is produced generally has no value and incurs the cost of disposal.

GT-DOS is a patented technology developed by TDA Research and licensed worldwide by GTC Technology. GT-DOS o ers simplicity of operation, and is speci cally applicable to lean acid gas streams, cost e ectively recovering sulfur in the 0.1 to 200 ton/day range.

Process Overview e GT-DOS technology converts H2S catalytically directly into sulfur, from lean (low concentration) H2S streams. e sulfur conversion e ciency is around 90% in a single pass, and is based on the reaction listed below:

H2S + ½ O2 → S + H2O

An advanced metal oxide catalyst enables sulfur conversion at low or high pressures, and has been demonstrated to be robust in the presence of heavy hydrocarbons. e catalyst has been proven to be resistant to high concentrations of hydrocarbons, including aromatics and ole ns.

e H2S containing feed stream is mixed with air, heated to the reaction temperature of around 400°F (200°C) and fed to the GT-DOS reactor. e reacted stream containing sulfur vapor is then condensed to recover the sulfur. e gas stream can be further desulfurized with sorbents or tail gas treatment. e sulfur is recovered as molten sulfur with properties similar to traditional Claus sulfur. It can be converted to solid sulfur for ease of handling.

Heat integration between the feed and e uent reduces overall utility consumption. Recycle designs increase overall conversion and enable the treatment of higher concentration acid gas streams.

e GT-DOS process o ers the inherent bene ts of a single step process for H2S removal and sulfur recovery, while avoiding the operating problems of aqueous redox or biological processes. e limited amount of equipment greatly reduces equipment cost, and reliability and maintenance issues.

ApplicationsGT-DOS is applicable to lean H2S streams (< 10%) across a range of pressures (<1000 psi or 60 bar).

GT-DOS is bene cial for operators who:

• Have stranded sour natural gas

• Need low capital cost bulk sulfur removal prior to a high e ciency tail gas clean-up operation or to enable a stream to be vented

• Operate a conventional “modi ed Claus” plant e technology is particularly applicable for those that need sulfur removal for fuel gas applications, incinerators, or amine o -gas streams that need to be vented.

Process Advantages• Does not require acid gas enrichment, can directly

convert streams with low H2S content

• High pressure operation

• Lower capital cost compared to “modi ed Claus”, liquid iron-redox, bio-sulfurization or non-aqueous liquid phase sulfur recovery processes

• Operating costs comparable with conventional “modi ed Claus”, and signi cantly lower than liquid iron-redox or other non-aqueous sulfur recovery processes

• High purity, saleable sulfur

• Proven capability to handle higher hydrocarbon content compared to traditional direct oxidation, or liquid iron-redox approaches
