PORTSMOUTH -The story of ‘The Fire

Giant’ unfolds through a series of flashbacks as an unnamed and calculating CIA Agent (Seth Waters) delves into the story of Captain Albert Jacques (Nelson). Throughout the course of his interviews with several of Jacques’ subordinates (Alex Pease and Danny O’Leary), his Vietnamese paramour Ling (Dominique Salvacion), the camp Nurse (Katharine Jordan), and finally the mysterious Major Grant (James Fay) this agent un-covers a portrait of a man driven by id and ego to unspeakable sav-agery.

When the consequences of his actions finally catch up to

poet mother, the Wood Broth-ers possess a passion for lyrical storytelling and unfettered mu-sical precision together to create a sound truly like none other. Their haunting fraternal har-monies and impressive technical skills work together to form an unbelievable alloy of folk, story-telling, blues, and excitement.

“I’ve been a fan of The Wood Brothers for some time,” explained Prescott Park’s ex-ecutive director, Ben Anderson, “and to feature them as part of the folk festival this year is a seri-ous treat.”

The evening will also in-clude winner of two consecu-tive Independent Music Awards, Pokey LaFarge. This thirty-year-old folk phenomenon has six full-length studio albums under his belt, and has won fans and been turning heads worldwide with his own creative spin and mix of string band music with rag-time, country blues and Western swing from a bygone era.

Perhaps Ketch Secor (Of Old Crow Medicine Show) put it best: “...what saintly patron brought Clifford Hayes back from the dead and sent him back to Carpet Alley to reclaim his crown? Well, all I can say for cer-tain is nobody sings much like Jimmie Rodgers anymore and nobody crows, rakes, rips, yips, shouts, buzzes or croons quite like Pokey LaFarge either.”

The folk festival also offers audience members the opportu-nity to experience Austin native Shakey Graves. With his dy-namic vocals and his unbeliev-able flatpicking, Graves’ lo-fi recordings speak to a quality beyond the external, and even those are nothing when com-

‘The Fire Giant’ At Players’ Ringhim, Jacques must make the de-cision to either become the good man he always thought himself to be or die the mindless animal that everyone else assumes him to be.

Full of tense moments, strong language, and even stron-ger acting, ‘The Fire Giant’ illus-trates just what is meant by the phrase “Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster”.

‘The Fire Giant’ runs August 1, 2, 8, and 9 at 10 p.m., and Aug 3 and 10 at 9 p.m. Tick-ets available at the door, $12 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, and Players Ring Members. Players’ Ring, 105 Marcy St., Portsmouth. 603-436-8123, www.playersring.org.

The Prescott Park 16th Annual Folk Festival, July 25

pared to the haunting nature of seeing him live on stage.

Also featured are The Stray Birds, three accomplished musi-cians, hailing from Pennsylva-nia, meet in a harmony of voice, fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and haunting lyrics to form The Stray Birds. Their indescribable sound and style has carried them from Lancaster County to around the world. In their own words: “We just try to serve the song in the best way that we can.” For some, easier said than done; for The Stray Birds? A promise most sin-cerely fulfilled.

Rounding out the line-up are eight NH natives who com-prise the Soggy Po Boys who unite to generate a truly unique sound. From their first gig at the Barley Pub in Dover, their musi-cal style has been difficult to cat-egorize. Part New Orleans, part gospel, part funk, and part pure synergistic invention, there is something for everyone in their audience, and something you are unlikely to hear anywhere else.

“It’s a night not to be missed this season. This year’s

Folk Festival lineup has set the bar high for years to come,” said Anderson. “We’re both proud and incredibly excited to have such a dynamic and heavy hit-ting collection of performers per-forming in the park on one night. A night that’s sure to make some pretty great memories for all music lovers.”

Prescott Park Arts Festival brings not only amazing musical experiences, but peerless theat-rical productions as well. Join Shrek and Donkey for Shrek the Musical, presenting all summer long, Thursday through Sunday.

Tables on the Federal Sav-ings Bank VIP Seating Deck are available for reservations now at Prescott Park’s website, in addi-tion to the blanket reservations in front of the Wilcox Industries Main Stage. Special discount pricing is available for Festival members. All reservations can be made through the Festival’s website at: www.prescottpark.org. If you think back to your math classes in high

school or college, you may remember that many of the problems involved the use of variables. Changing these variables around in any fash-ion would change the outcome of the problem. Similar situa-tions occur in life all the time. To illustrate: If you look at the need to manage your retire-ment income so that you can’t outlive it as a “problem” to be solved, you will need to adjust some variables to arrive at the solution you seek. That’s why it’s so important you be aware of the key variables involved in your retirement income plan-ning.

What are some of these variables? Consider the fol-lowing:

Your investment mixYou might think that

once you reach retirement, you can invest solely in in-come-producing vehicles, but you can’t forget about infla-tion. Even a low rate of infla-tion, such as we’ve had for a number of years, can seriously

erode your purchasing power over time — which is why you need to consider owning at least some investments that provide growth potential. Of course, you can change your investment mix at any time: For example, you might want to shift to a greater percentage of income-oriented investments as you move deeper into retirement.

Your withdrawal rateYou’ll need to calculate

how much you can afford to withdraw from your invest-ment portfolio each year with-out depleting it prematurely. Your annual withdrawal rate will depend on a few different factors — such as your project-ed longevity, your investment mix and your other sources of income — but you’ll want to be careful not to take out too much too soon. As was the case with your investment mix, you have the flexibility to adjust your withdrawal rate during your re-tirement years.

Your Social SecurityYou can start collecting

Social Security benefits as early as age 62, but your benefits will

be permanently reduced by up to 30 percent unless you wait until your Full Retirement Age (FRA), which is likely 66 or 67. However, your monthly checks can increase if you delay taking your benefits beyond your Full Retirement Age, up to age 70. If you come from a particular-ly long-living family, and you have sufficient income apart from Social Security, you might want to delay your payments to get the larger benefit amount. Once again, you have a choice to make.

Your earned incomeJust because you’ve retired

from one career, it doesn’t mean you’ll never again earn some income. Many retirees take part-time jobs, do some consulting or even open a small business. Whether you feel that you need to work, or you just want to work, the money you earn from employment can be an impor-tant component of your overall retirement income.

As you can see, all these variables involve choices on your part. And how you choose to exercise each variable will

affect all the other variables. Consequently, as you manage and monitor your retirement income, you’ll need to make many important decisions. Still, this doesn’t have to be a scary prospect — because the very fact that you have choices means you also have a great deal of control over your situation.

So, study your choices carefully, as you work toward achieving the income you need to enjoy the retirement you want.

This article was written by Edward Jones and submitted by Financial Advisor Joseph Mit-tica. If you would like to reach Mittica, you can do so by calling 603-964-1947.

Dear Computer Lady,I have Word 2003 and

Vista.. I saw your recent answer about converting a Word docu-ment to PDF using Word 2013 and wonder if there is a way to for me to do so.

I googled that question and found numerous “free” pro-grams that claim that capabil-ity. However I am aware of the dangers of “free” programs. Do you have any suggestions? I am a secretary of a owner managed condo association and would like to send our association cor-respondence using PDF but I can’t afford the cost of Adobe. Thank you, Charles

Dear Charles,Did you check to see if

your version of Word has the export to PDF feature? If not, I have used a print to pdf pro-

gram successfully. You can try Cute PDF at: http://www.cutepdf.com/. Just make sure you read each install screen and remove the check mark so that you don’t install any unwanted toolbars. Once you install the print to PDF program, you click on “Print” as if you are going to print the document, but click Cute PDF as the printer. You will then get a dialog box allow-ing you to specify a name and location for your document. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,What is the best color key-

board to use if I am having a difficult time seeing the letters on the keys? Right now, I have a black keyboard with grey let-ters, and I need to turn on a bright light in order to be able to see the letters. Thanks, Rachel

Dear Rachel,I can totally relate to your

situation! My keyboard sits on a drawer that slides under my desktop, and I often type with it only partially exposed. Most of the time, I type by touch only, but when I need to look at the keys for one reason or another it was hard to see. I finally solved my problem with a Logitech wire-less illuminated keyboard. The keys are laser-etched and backlit. No matter what time of day I am typing, I can always see my keys. A less expensive option might be stickers to go on your keyboard. I have seen yellow keyboard stick-ers with black letters. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have a window that

always pops up from Java Aut-oupdater from Oracle America and asks if I want the following program to make changes to my computer. I think this one is safe but just wanted to check before I click yes. I know that there was some issues with Java at one time so I wanted to check with you first. Thanks so much for your help, Karen

Dear Karen,I think it is great that you

are so cautious when doing

updates, I know that there are many web sites on the internet today that pretend to be one thing, and when you down-load that product, you get 20 other “products” that you never wanted along with it.That is why I always check to make sure I am downloading a program from the website of the company that owns it. For example:

When I download Chrome, I make sure it is from Google’s website.

When I download CClean-er, I make sure it is from Piri-form’s website.

When I download Acrobat Reader, I make sure it is from Adobe’s website.

When I download Java, I make sure it is from Oracle’s website.

Even then, when you down-load and install these programs, you have to read each screen carefully to make sure you are not agreeing to also install the latest toolbar or other program. Usually, you have to remove a check mark somewhere before you click “Next” or “OK”. Java has had security issues in the past, but the company has been good about fixing those as soon as they are discovered, it should

be safe to use now. Since Oracle is the company that develops Java, it sounds like your pop- up is safe. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Do you have step-by-step

instructions for initiating and using skype? Camera is mounted and hooked in, but knowledge is lacking. Very much appreciate your help. Thank you, Herb

Dear Herb,I don’t actually have any in-

structions for skype on my web-site, but they have some great tutorials on their site at: https://support.skype.com/en/. Some of the available tutorials are:

How do I get the desktop version of Skype (Windows 8 or above)? How do I add or change my profile picture in Skype for Windows desktop? How do I turn off automatic updates in Skype for Windows desktop? How can I block unwanted call-ers in Skype for Windows desk-top? How do I update my status, mood message and profile pic-ture in Skype for...This should help you a lot! Elizabeth
