Ohio State Representative Randy Gardner

Ellen Rooney, Local, Regional, and National Affairs Chair provided the introduction

Representative Gardner received both his masters and bachelors degree from Bowling Green State University.

Representative Gardner recognizes BGSU’s excellence by referring to the recent

announcement of BGSU’s ranking in US News and World Report as tied for 11th in its

commitment to undergraduate education. He also noted the positive impact of graduate

students and graduate student teaching on this ranking.

Representative Gardner highlighted the recent construction projects on-campus include

the groundbreaking of the Stroh center, the Wolfe Center for the Arts, and the funding for the Ice Arena renovations.

Through state-government support BGSU has received $150,000 for ice arena

renovations and $200,000 for solar energy research. Rep. Gardner noted how BGSU’s

efforts in solar technology have been positively received by industry; especially when

compared to other area universities. Rep. Gardner discussed the centers of excellence program and noted how BGSU’s

emphasis on particular “centers of excellence” should not be seen as a move away from

other academic programs. He supports a continuation of the variety of academic

disciplines here at the university. The current economic environment is very difficult. The state has decided to reduce the

amount of funding to higher education for the 2010-2012 budget. However, Rep. Gardner

recognizes that BGSU is a critical component to both Wood County and Northwestern Ohio.

Representative Gardner is willing to talk to Graduate students about issues in the future.

Please feel free to follow-up inquires with his office.

Sundeep Mutgi & Kevin Basch, Undergraduate Student Government

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Undergraduate Student Government could not present

at the General Assembly this week. They will be rescheduled for a future date.

GSS GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVES-AT-LARGE UPDATE" SEPTEMBER 21, 2009

" PAGE 1

What is GSS?A brief guide to what the GSS does for you!GSS, the governing body for graduate students at Bowling Green State University, is committed to being an efficient and effective governance organization for its constituents. Graduate Student Senate works for and represents the 3000 graduate students at Bowling Green State University. Through legislative efforts, active representation on University committees, and ongoing communication with administration, faculty, staff, and students we serve as the chief advocate for graduate student needs and issues throughout the university. Additionally, we work for improvements in every area, from support for graduate assistants to social and cultural engagement.

Decisions are made at BGSU every day that affect graduate students. Subtle changes, such as veteran's rights and adjustments to the student healthcare policy can occur without graduate student input. Graduate Student Senate exists to ensure the graduate student voice, when key issues are being addressed, is ever present and always heard.

Last year, GSS was active in the effort to acquire our newly available Student Dental Insurance option, provided over $20,000 for student research and travel grants, as well as a number of research awards and social events.

INTRODUCING YOUR GRAD REPS (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1…)

From Steve: I truly hope that I can meet many of my fellow grad students and become aware of problems or other issues. I would like to be of help in promoting changes beneficial to either a few grad students or the community at large. Currently, I am heading up a project to assess the quality of assistantships across the university as a whole. I greatly desire to know what is important to graduate students from as many different departments as possible. I would appreciate as much feedback as I can get! I want to know what you as a grad student feel is helping you develop professionally, and what aspects of your BG experience have room for improvement. I would be happy to talk with any grad student, or set up a meeting with a group of grad students, to talk about aspects of your assistantship and your thoughts about the experience. You can contact me at [email protected]. Sincerely,

Steve Dinda

From Chane!e: I ran for graduate representative-at-large because I felt that there was a lack of community amongst BGSU graduate students. The graduate population of this University is easy to overlook unless we remain an active, vocal, and involved part of the University community as a whole. I have made it my job to work with the rest of the SEC to bring our community together. The first steps for me are this newsletter and blackboard announcements. You have a right to know what the GSS is doing on your behalf and to add your voice, concerns, or opinions to our work. I will continue putting out this newsletter to inform you of what we are doing. I will ask for your opinion on specific resolutions and issues, but I also expect you to bring your concerns to our attention as necessary. I will soon be putting opinion polls on Blackboard to ask you how I should vote on and write future legislation. I ask that you help me by taking advantage of those tools to make your voices heard. " " " Yours , "

Chane!e Vigue

CURRENT GSS LEGISLATION!

The GSS acts as the voice of all BGSU graduate students when we pass resolutions. Passed resolutions are reviewed and considered by University committees, often including officials at the highest levels. They truly do have an impact on the day-to-day decisions of the University.

There are two resolutions currently on the floor of the GSS General Assembly.GSS 2009.F1: A resolution to express GSS support, in principle, for the University’s new Strategic Plan. The plan was developed with input from students, faculty and staff over the last year and can be found HERE. We understand that this plan is broad and that specific implementation plans have not been laid out and we believe that this resolution addresses that. The resolution can be found HERE.GSS 2009.F2:This resolution is to create GSS-Sponsored awards and cash prizes for the Research Fair in the Fall. This event will help promote and facilitate the GSS Shanklin Awards in the Spring. Info on Shanklin Awards can be found HERE.
