2 Application

2.1 Overview Huawei Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway (GSM-R) GTSOFTX3000

Mobile Softswitch Center (GTSOFTX3000) is developed to meet the requirements of various

railway operators and networks.

Differences between the GTSOFTX3000 and MSOFTX3000 are as follows:

 Target market.

The GTSOFTX3000 applies to GSM-R networks, whereas the MSOFTX3000 applies to

public networks.

 Network scale.

The number of subscribers served by GSM-R networks is about 4000 to 30,000, which is

much smaller than that served by public networks. Therefore, the GTSOFTX3000 used

in GSM-R networks is configured with only one cabinet and one subrack.

 Services being provided.

The GSM-R GTSOFTX3000 supports GSM-R dedicated services as well as basic GSM

services and supplementary services defined in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project

(3GPP) protocol. The MSOFTX3000 supports many public network services as well as

basic GSM services and supplementary services defined in 3GPP.

Requirement on acknowledgement center (AC) server.

An AC server must be configured on the GSM-R networks and it records the

confirmation information of subscribers’ participation in high-priority group calls. Public

networks do not have an AC server.

Requirement on integrated service system (ISS) server.

An ISS server and an AC server can be collocated on GSM-R networks. The ISS server

does not require a separate board and it provides subscriber functional numbers for

railway dispatching system to query subscriber location information. Public networks do

not have an ISS server.

 Operation and maintenance unit (OMU).

The OMU used by GTSOFTX3000 and MSOFTX3000 has same hardware architecture

but different software architecture. The GTSOFTX3000 has its own OMU installation

software which can be downloaded from http://support.huawei.com.

3

2.2 GSM-R Description The mobile switching center (MSC) server used in the GSM-R networks does not uses

additional types of boards than the MSC server uses in public networks.

The MSC server used in the GSM-R networks is designed to serve 1000 to 300,000

subscribers. If a GSM-R network is required to serve more than 300,000 subscribers, contact

GSM-R PDT marketing operation (MO).

Traffic mode on the GSM-R networks is not discussed in this document.

The GSM-R supports 40,000 group calls.

The GSM-R supports intra-MSC Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling but does not

support other intra-MSC signaling, such as Bearer Independent Call Control (BICC) signaling.

H.248 supports IP and MTP3-User Adaptation Layer (M3UA) signaling, and the time division

multiplexing (TDM) supports MTP2-User Adaptation Layer (M2UA) and M3UA.

configured on a GSM-R network and it is installed in slots 0 and 1 (not fixed slot numbers) of

the basic subrack.

Universal service interface unit and E1/T1 & GE interface unit can be installed on the rear

board of the service processing unit. The GSM-R uses only VGCU that is installed in slots 0

and 1. Universal service interface unit or E1/T1 & GE interface unit can be installed on the

rear board of the VGCU. The VGCU supports IP packet processing and route selection.

Configuration principle: Each site that serves more than zero subscribers is configured with

the service processing unit.

E1 interfaces and two GE

interfaces.

When both narrowband links and wideband links are configured on the GSM-R network, the

E1/T1 & GE interface unit is required, and it is always installed on the rear board of the

VGCU.

Configuration principle: A site is configured with the E1/T1 & GE interface unit when the

front boards need to process TDM services that are transmitted over E1/T1 line.

network.

The universal service interface unit provides four GE interfaces and works in load-sharing or

1+1 backup mode to interwork with the VGCU. The GE interface at the topside is always

used.

Configuration principle: A site is configured with the universal service interface unit when

the front boards (including the iGWB unit, AC server, and AC+ISS server) do not need to

process TDM services that are transmitted over E1/T1 line.

3.5 Typical Configuration Typical configuration of the GTSOFTX3000 V200R001 consists of base configuration system,

4 License Configuration Description

This section describes the configuration of GTSOFTX3000 licenses in the following aspects:

 License control policy

 License package configuration

 License configuration list

4.1 License Control Policy The GTSOFTX3000 implements subscriber capacity-based license control policy.

4.1.1 Subscriber Capacity-based License Control Policy

Introduction:

The GTSOFTX3000 works correctly only when traffic volume does not reach licensed

limit.

The GTSOFTX3000 queries the total number of visitor location register (VLR)

subscribers in real time and determines whether traffic volume exceeds the licensed

limit.

If the number of VLR subscribers reaches 80% of the licensed limit, the GTSOFTX3000

generates alarms at the warning level.

If the number of VLR subscribers exceeds the licensed limit, the GTSOFTX3000

generates alarms for capacity overloading.

The GTSOFTX3000 does not restrict calls after overload occurs.

The GTSOFTX3000 records the usage of license files of the past two months.

Impact on subscribers:

The subscriber capacity-based license control policies do not affect service processing.

The hardware capacity determines the traffic volume that the GTSOFTX3000 can

process.

Carriers can determine whether to increase the licensed capacity based on the overload

alarms and the license file usage that the GTSOFTX3000 records.

Rules for calculating the total number of VLR subscribers:

When a subscriber registers with the local VLR after the subscriber’s mobile terminal is

powered on or the subscriber roams in to the local VLR area, the total number of VLR

subscribers increases by 1.

If a subscriber roams out of the local VLR area, the total number of VLR subscribers

decreases by 1.

If the mobile terminal of a local VLR subscriber is powered off for more than 2 hours

(by default), the total number of VLR subscribers decreases by 1 and this subscriber data

will be removed from the VLR. You can modify the value based on site requirements.

4.3.14 Overload Control Mechanism

License overload control policies are used to control traffic climaxes or subscriber capacity

climaxes. Two common resource control items are used to achieve license overload control:

Number of Continuous Days in a Traffic Climax and Maximum Number of Traffic Climax per

Year:

Number of Continuous Days in a Traffic Climax: Assume that the value of this resource

control item is M. When consecutive M days witness the license overload, the

GTSOFTX3000 considers that a traffic climax or a subscriber capacity climax occurs,

and the climax counter increases by 1.

Figure 4-1 shows the resource control item Number of Continuous Days in a Traffic

Climax.

Figure 4-1 Number of Continuous Days in a Traffic Climax

Maximum Number of Traffic Climax per Year: Assume that the value of this resource

control item is N. When the number of traffic climaxes or subscriber capacity climaxes

exceeds N within a year, the GTSOFTX3000 rejects calls.

Figure 4-2 shows the resource control item Maximum Number of Traffic Climax per

Year.

Figure 4-2 Maximum Number of Traffic Climax per Year

License Overload Control Rules for Different Carriers

Application of the resource control items Number of Continuous Days in a Traffic Climax and

Maximum Number of Traffic Climax per Year varies for different carriers are as follows:

For China Mobile, M is 3, and N is 10. This means that when consecutive three days

witness the license overload, the GTSOFTX3000 considers that a traffic climax or a

subscriber capacity climax occurs. When the current year witnesses 10 traffic climaxes

or subscriber capacity climaxes, the GTSOFTX3000 rejects calls in subsequent climaxes

of the year.

For the other carriers, M is 1, and N is 30. This means that when one day witnesses the

license overload, the GTSOFTX3000 considers that a traffic climax or a subscriber

capacity climax occurs. When the current year witnesses 30 traffic climaxes or

subscriber capacity climaxes, the GTSOFTX3000 rejects calls in subsequent climaxes of

the year.

License Overload Control Policies in Different Licensing Models

If the licensing model is traffic volume-based, the GTSOFTX3000 does the following:

Rejects calls that exceed the threshold allowed by the license when the number of

concurrent traffic climaxes per year exceeds N.

Rejects intelligent network (IN) calls that exceed the threshold allowed by the license

when the number of IN traffic climaxes per year exceeds N.

Rejects data service calls that exceed the threshold allowed by the license when the

number of data service traffic climaxes per year exceeds N.

If the licensing model is traffic volume-based, the GTSOFTX3000 does the following:

Rejects the access requests of the subscribers that exceed the threshold allowed by the

license when the number of total subscriber capacity climaxes per year exceeds N.

Rejects the access requests of the Customized Applications for Mobile network

Enhanced Logic (CAMEL) subscribers that exceed the threshold allowed by the license

when the number of CAMEL subscriber capacity climaxes per year exceeds N.

Rejects the access requests of the data service subscribers that exceed the threshold

allowed by the license when the number of data service subscribers capacity climaxes

per year exceeds N.

GTSOFTX3000 V100R001 Х

5.2 Upgrade to GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00 Is Not Supported

The GTSOFTX3000 cannot be upgraded from V100R001 to V200R001C00 due to their

different hardware systems, operating systems, and databases. You can ensure that the

GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00 uses:

 ATCA-based hardware.

The same software as that of the CPCI-based GTSOFTX3000 V100R001. You can

determine the software quotation based on carriers’ requirements.

A new license file because the encryption mechanisms for the two platforms differ.

5.3 GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00 The GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00 upgrade is not required because it is the first

ATCA-based version.

6 Expansion

6.1 Hardware Expansion Principle Hardware expansion is not requested for on the GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00.

6.2 Software Expansion Principle Obtain the numbers of current license files and software from BoQ before the expansion.

Calculate the numbers of license files and software using the later-version configuration

tool based on the traffic model of the GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00.

Obtain the numbers of license files and software to be installed. The number of license

files and software to be installed is equal to the difference between the total numbers of

licenses and software of the GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00 and that of the

GTSOFTX3000 V200R001C00.

Ensure that all software or license files required by carriers are ready.

7 Precautions

7.1 AC Server The AC server (or the AC+ISS server) or the GMS server does not work in 1+1 backup mode

in a subrack. Therefore, the AC server (or the AC+ISS server) or the GSM server uses one

board.

The AC server and the ISS server are used on GSM-R networks, and the GMS server is used

on GSM-T networks.

The ISS server is used for GSM-R customized services and can be collocated with the AC

server using the same board.
