GħSL
Portfolio 2015/16
GħSL was set up by a group of law students in 1943, led by Joseph Ganado, who later became Professor of Civil Law at the Faculty of Laws of the University of Malta.
1
Law students elect executive members to the GħSL Board to represent their best interests within the faculty, while Class Representatives are appointed from every year of the law course to maintain the best possible communication between the Society, the Faculty of Laws and the students themselves. The organisation plays a pivotal role in law students’ academic and social life at the University of Malta. GħSL seeks to be at the forefront of local and international legal policies; naturally of interest to law students. The organisation is responsible for the distribution of authoritative law notes and past papers published by GħSL and the University of Malta, and also

organizes several seminars and conferences which are often addressed by leading local and foreign speakers. GħSL has undergone a complete revamp, with new blood giving a fresh image to the organisation’s already solid foundation. The yearly social calendar focuses on organizing a variety of parties; among these are Fresher’s, end of exams, and summer parties. Most notable in GħSL’s social calendar is the yearly ball, more recently the seminar for law students, and participation in charitable events such as the President’s Fun Run. Such events help strengthen the link between the organization and law student
About GħSL Għaqda Studenti Tal-Liġi (Malta Law Students’ Society) is a faculty-based non-profit organisation at the University of Malta that represents all law students within the Faculty of Laws.

body, as well as with other university students. As part of its holistic approach to university life, GħSL makes an effort to keep in close contact with the various organisations on campus. The organization has also been responsible for publishing ‘Id-Dritt’ Law Journal, first released in 1944, when a number of law students started publishing the very first University of Malta law journal. Today, this journal has gained wide popularity among law students and professionals alike, with the 25th edition being published in 2014. In an attempt to facilitate access to important legal material, the organization set up the GħSL ‘Online Law Journal’, providing students, professionals, and the general public with a myriad of information. These articles and legal commentaries are updated frequently to keep up with the ever-changing legal forum.

GħSL also boasts its own Thesis Library, located at the Faculty of Laws. It contains a collection of theses written by students at the culmination of their legal education at the University of Malta, as well as a number of books and foreign journals kindly donated by the organisation’s benefactors. These materials are an invaluable source of information for research and study, and can be borrowed for a time period from the library itself.
Dirk is a very committed and determined person who focuses on reaching the goals he sets himself from time to time, whilst dedicating a lot of time to being an active student and helping other students in the process.
What does GħSL mean to you?
GħSL is a vital organisation within University student life and is an essential component of the Faculty of Laws, which can be referred to as a tool which facilitates the Law Student's experience at the University of Malta.
Why did you choose to get involved in GħSL?
GħSL had so much potential which I felt wasn't being properly tapped into and therefore together with a few friends decided to involve myself and set out on this project. The fact that I would be able to represent my fellow course-‐mates and help better their academic experience at University was also a major reason as to why I chose to join GħSL.
One word which best describes the organisation.
Effective.
What are you aiming to achieve in the coming year?
I am hoping to continue on this journey I set out on 2 years ago to make GħSL more relevant on several different spheres, with the main priority this year being to continue to improve the services offered by GħSL to all Law students, whilst also becoming a respected legal partner on national issues that may arise from time to time. The ongoing priority is to continue building foundations for future executives to always be one step ahead when it comes to student representation.
Dirk Urpani PRESIDENT [email protected]
Joshua is a very meticulous person when it comes to executing entrusted projects and finds satisfaction in knowing that what he’ll produce will be for the benefit of other students.
What does GħSL mean to you? GħSL is an organisation on campus made of law students for law students. Since the law course is so large, it's very easy for a student to be engulfed in the machine that is the law course at the University of Malta. GħSL is an essential tool to bridge the student with the Faculty of Laws. We have a fundamental role to make the student's academic life on campus easier and less stressful by giving them as many tools as possible to facilitate the process. This also means finding ways to help students break from their studies by organising social events. Why did you choose to get involved in GħSL? I chose to get involved in GħSL to ensure law students are never put to the side. One thing I believe in, is that although we come to University to learn and to work, this experience should be something more, more than simply day in and day out of lectures but an experience that will remain with us for years to come. One word which best describes the organisation. REPRESENTATIVE What are you aiming to achieve in the coming year? My aim is to work to see GħSL grow further and reach out to students in their daily lives ensuring they can count on the organisation to support them throughout the year. These are exciting times for the organisation, and I look forward to be a part of it yet again, whether in dealing with issues in the law course or national legal issues.
Joshua Chircop SECRETARY GENERAL [email protected]
Patrick is a 27-‐year-‐old student who is currently reading for the Doctorate of Laws degree after successfully graduating from Bachelor of Laws. Having previously graduated from the BSc. Business and Computing and B.Com. (Hons) Management degrees, he is considered to have an extensive experience both at University and also in the business world.
Patrick also has an extensive portfolio when it comes to student organisations, where he has been giving his contribution to various events and projects, both locally and internationally, since the age of 16. Having served as Faculty of Laws Student Representative and Class Representative for the past three years, he has also built an excellent rapport with the Faculty of Laws academics and administration. What does GħSL mean to you? GħSL is a faculty-‐based student organisation which has the representation all law students at heart. But apart from the cliché version, really and truly GħSL is not only limited to students and the Faculty of Laws, as it was from its inception and still is till the day of today a point of departure for all aspiring and established lawyers, the Judicature and the Justice Ministry. Apart from representing law students, which is already a mission in itself, the Malta Law Student Society organises social and academic events, publishes its renowned peer-‐reviewed law journal Id-‐Dritt and addresses law-‐related national issues which affect the public at large. Why did you choose to get involved in GħSL? I believe that GħSL has a great potential when it comes to student politics, representation, social and academic events, and law-‐related issues. It would have been a pity not to take the opportunity to join the Executive Board of such a great organisation. One word which best describes the organisation. Relevant What are you aiming to achieve in the coming year? Having served in the same position for the past year, where I succeeded in restructuring GħSL’s accounting system and managed to turn loss-‐making events into more profitable ones, this year I can direct my focus to consolidate last year’s work by securing more sponsorships and raising more funds to be able to provide all law students with more services and events.

Most importantly to continue building on the strong foundations set up last term and make student automatically seek GħSL for whatever matter.
