Starting its journey way back in 1955 as a small entity engaged in manufacture of engineering goods in its tiny factory located at Howrah, the Sheffield of the East near Kolkata, India, GSEC has grown from strength to strength to become a multi product company, whose products are used by Indian Railways and a host of Railway Coach and Wagon manufacturers.

A leader in Brake system and Pantograph, the company (GSEC) manufactures Slack Adjusters, Empty Load Devices, Change over Gears, Brake Cylinders, Valves, Locomotive and EMU Pantographs including all the spares at their three modern factories located at Dasnagar in Howrah. It is an ISO 9001: 2008 accredited company and employs nearly 80 people and can boast of an efficient manufacturing facility supported by modern testing laboratory and equipments to enforce and ensure strict quality control according to the stringent standards. It constantly keeps pace with and imbibes the modern technology to remain competitive.

No wonder, the company is held in high esteem by its satisfied customers, the distinguished list of which includes Indian Railways, Texmaco Rail & Engg, Titagarh Wagons, Jupiter Wagons, BESCO, Hindusthan Engg, Burn Standard, Bridge and Roof, Jessop and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works.

Over the years there has been a transition in management from the closely guarded individualistic approach to a more liberal and professional managers. The decision making is not the exclusive domain of the top management. The middle level is also part of the process with adequate authority. Accountability is a buzz word & performance is rewarded. Strict quality control measures are adopted at every stage, be it procurement of materials or manufacturing process at machine shop, assembly line as well as packing and delivery.

The company has, in its three manufacturing units, installed several heavy, medium and high precision machines like Centre Lathe, Grinding Machine – both bench and Cylindrical, Honning Machine, Rolling Machine, Power Press, Shearing Machine, Hydraulic Press, Radial Drill, Pillar Drill, Thread Generating Machine, Turret Lathe and Drum Type Turret Lathe, Tool Grinder, Power Saw, Compressor, Generator and CNC Machines of various types. The skilled work force utilise these machines to manufacture several World Class precision products. Slack Adjuster is a device which adjusts the distance (Slack) between the Brake Block and Wheel Thread. GSEC manufactured Slack Adjuster can either increase or decrease the slack, i.e. double acting in operation depending upon the requirement. We manufacture IRSA-600, IRSA-600J IRSA-450 and IRSA-750 Slack Adjusters as per Indian Railway Standard. Besides, we also manufacture DRV-300 as per SAB Swedish design.

GSEC is the second largest manufacturer and supplier of Slack Adjuster to Indian Railways and has supplied more that 180000 of these to them, which are fitted in the bulk of nearly 250000 freight Wagons and over 65000 Passenger Coaches. Our products are known for its quality and durability.

Pantograph is a device through which the Engine gets Electric Power from the Overhead Transmission lines and therefore, a precondition for movement of train. A large number of EMU and Locomotive Engines of Indian Railways are equipped with GSEC made Pantographs of AM-12/PAN 01 type. Our Pantographs are known for its quality and are therefore, popular amongst Electric Engine Manufactures. We are a leading supplier of various Pantograph Spares and Sub-assemblies like Lower Arm Assembly, Middle Articulation Assembly, Upper Articulation Assembly, Central Pedestal Assembly, Push Rod Assembly, Steady Tube Assembly, Bow Assembly, Motor Assembly, Mechanism Assembly, Throttle Valve Assembly, Support Rod Assembly etc.

BRAKE CYLINDERS WITH INTEGRAL SLACK ADJUSTERS

These are manufactured in 8” dia (203 mm) with 3.3/4” stroke (95 mm). This is a Brake Cylinder with integral Slack Adjuster for application in Indian Railways Coaching Brake System which eliminates use of separate Slack Adjuster and also reduces rigging and levers to a considerable extent.

PASSENGER EMERGENCY ALARM VALVE

The Passenger Emergency Alarm valve is a high capacity vent valve, which magnifies and relays the pneumatic braking signal generated through operation of passenger alarm signal device.

BRAKE CYLINDER

GSEC manufactures Brake cylinder in two versions i.e. underframe mounted version Brake Cylinder having diameter of 355 mm (14" ) as well 300 mm (12"). Bogie mounted versions are also manufactured.

Brake cylinder receives pneumatic pressure from auxiliary reservoir after being regulated by Distributor valve in case of brake application and develops mechanical brake power by outward movement of piston assembly.

CHECK VALVE WITH CHOKE

Check Valves are used between Feed Pipe and Auxiliary Reservoir to permit flow of air from Feed Pipe to Auxiliary Reservoir in one direction only.

PASSENGER EMERGENCY ALARM SIGNAL DEVICE

The Passenger Emergency Alarm Signal Device is provided in each passenger coach equipped with graduated release automatic air brake system to enable passenger to apply brakes from the vehicle in case of any emergency.

CENTRIFUGAL DIRT COLLECTOR

Centrifugal Dirt Collector is provided for removal of dirt as well as heavy dust particles like sand gravel and other foreign materials prior to the entry of air in the system by centrifuge action. It also provides a local sump to brake-pipe precipitated moisture.

EMPTY LOAD DEVICE

This is an appliance which increase the Brake power in loaded carriage and reduces the brake power in unloaded/ empty carriage.

AUXILIARY RESERVOIR

Auxiliary Reservoir feeds Brake Cylinder through Distributor Valve in brake application position. 100 Lts capacity reservoir is used for Freight Wagon & 200 Lts capacity reservoir is used for Coach Brake System.

ISOLATING COCK

Ball type isolating cock are used to provide facility for cutting-off of air supply to Auxiliary Reservoir from Feed Pipe as well as isolation of Brake Cylinder.

CUT OFF ANGLE COCK

Cut-off Angle Cocks are provided at the end of brake pipe and feed pipe on each vehicle to maintain flow of air in the air brake system during the run of the vehicle. These cocks are closed while isolating the vehicle from the train for any reason. Cut off angle cock are supplied either in 1.1/4” (32 mm) or 1” (25 mm) sizes.

CONTROL ROD & ADJ. SPINDLE

Two are integral parts of Slack Adjusters of all types. These are manufactured in different sizes according to the Slack Adjuster specification.

OUR PRODUCTS

Our state of the art testing facilities are geared to test the quality of our products rigorously to leave no room for complaint for our customers.

Our main Test Rig is made as per Swedish SAB design for Pay out/ Pay in and Dimension tests for Slack Adjuster, Brake Cylinder, Adjuster Spindle, Protection Tube, Piston Stroke indicator Scale and Pressure Gauge.

The secondary Test Rig is designed like a wagon chassis in pro to type equipped with Empty Load Device, which tests various dimensions of all above as well as of Control Rod and Empty Load Device.

The third one is a Clasp Brake Rigging arrangement of two Bogies in coupled condition consisting of 2 pairs of wheels, 4 Brake beams and 4 pairs of brake blocks in each bogie equipped with Empty Load Device and Change Over Gear arrangement.

Another heavy Test Rig is an IRS type Single Brake Rigging arrangement equipped with Empty Load Device and Change Over Gear

maintaining ‘A’ dimension of 70 mm and ‘E’ dimension of ‘0’ to 600 mm. The wheels can be set upto condemning limit of 906 mm dia.

Apart from these heavy test rigs, we are also equipped with several smaller lightweight testing facility for Piston Stroke dimensional measurements, e.g. Special Performance Test Rig and Rig for Testing loss of Force for all types of Slack Adjusters and are equipped with Dynamometer for load reading and Vernier scale to check defection of Adjuster Tube with respect to Barrel.

Besides, Tensile load is applied on Slack Adjuster having capacity of 10 tons and more in our Tension Test Rig.

Our Vibration Test Rig is equipped with frequency meter to check the vibration of Slack Adjusters under different frequencies ranging from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. Our Shadowgraph machine checks the THD. profile of the components with enlarged view of upto 40 times with the help of Micrometer.
