At Girl Scouts of Colorado, we’re creating the opportunities that girls want and

experiences that change lives. Every day is filled with possibilities while Girl Scouts do

great things.

The stories you’ll see in this report – and so many more not published here – are

inspiring. The compassion and caring of girls who made beautiful dresses from

pillowcases to put clothes on the backs of orphaned children. The courageous girls

who climbed a sheer wall in Wyoming because they knew the courage gained clinging

to a rock would give them plenty of confidence to face the challenges of starting

middle school. The girls who love hands-on learning and didn’t shy away from

technology as they built computers and put the power of gadgets to work. The girls

who made a video to encourage everyone in their community to pledge to reduce

energy consumption because they truly love their planet.

Their stories are inspiring, but they wouldn’t be possible without generous donations

from people like you. We thank you for your support. I’m proud to say that Girl Scouts

of Colorado has put a strategic plan into place this year that will guide for years to

come. We’re investing in the future and making significant strides in technology that

will help us better serve girls, their families and our volunteers.

As we prepare for the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in 2012, it’s natural to look

back at 100 years of change and progress. But we’re also looking ahead to see that

Girl Scouts is well-positioned to make a difference in girls’ lives for the next 100 years

and beyond. New generations of Girl Scouts will gain an experience built on the solid

foundation of Girl Scouting but with modern flair that meets their needs.

Now, girls have more options than ever for being a Girl Scout. Pathways to

participation give girls and volunteers flexible opportunities – travel, events, series,

troops, virtual, camp. They decide what pathway to take, and all pathways lead to the

Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

I meet girls every day who blow me away. Girls do great things

and Girl Scouts helps get them there.

Territory: all 64 counties in Colorado

Gold Award: 49 girls, 2 percent of eligible girls, earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, with community service projects ranging from building the self-esteem of 5th grade girls to collecting clothes for kids in need to planning a mock accident to prevent students from drinking and driving.

Silver Award: 331 girls, 6.5 percent of eligible girls, earned the highest award for girls ages 12-14

Girl Scouts of Colorado facts

Growing as a girl and a leader I have been a member of the Girl Scouts since I was in kindergarten as a Daisy. The

experiences and opportunities that this program has given me have helped me to

grow as a girl and also as a leader.

Every day we would say the Girl Scout Promise, promising to live by the Girl Scout

Law, and as a young girl I would often pride myself in my ability to keep my promises,

so I learned the Girl Scout Law. The contents of the Girl Scout Law set a lot of

expectations for a kindergartner, but as a Daisy I strived to live by it. Ever since then,

committing to the Law has almost become second nature and, believe it or not, doing

so has helped me succeed in many ways.

As I continue on through my high school career, actively seeking new things to try and

succeed in, it will be important to continue holding high expectations for myself. I

have many people to thank for helping me to learn about holding high expectations,

like my parents and my teachers, and people whose true names I never knew – they

were the counselors at the Girl Scout camps who worked hard to make Girl Scouts an

enjoyable learning experience. They helped shape me into the type of person I am

today, and for that I am grateful.

Kirsten Lang, a member of Troop 876 and a sophomore at

Overland High School in Aurora, was selected in June to receive a

National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT)

Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Bronze Award: 672 girls, 8 percent of eligible girls, earned the highest award for girls ages 9-11

Outreach: 2,502 underrepresented girls served

Financial assistance: $144,483 in assistance awarded for camp, events, travel and program materials

Camp: 2,938 girls attended overnight camp and day camps

Hometown Heroes: 128,000 boxes of cookies were donated through the Gift of Caring/Hometown Heroes program

Programs offered: 159 total programs serving 11,478 girls

Community service: 88,990 hours of community service by girls

Girl Scouts built computers and created videos at the Geek Squad summer program.

Girls think geek Gone are the days when girls shy away from technology.

Seventy-five eager Girl Scouts filled several rooms at

the University of Denver in June for a week-long Geek

Squad summer program.

These girls weren’t just playing with the latest high-

tech gadgets. They built computers, shot and edited

videos, created original tunes and blew off steam

with high-tech recreational pursuits such as digital

scavenger hunts, Wii games, Dance Off and Band Hero

competitions. The energy was palpable as they shouted

out answers and challenged their instructors.

The first-ever Girl Scout Geek Squad Summer Academy

in Denver gave Girl Scouts a chance to raise their

technology IQ, spark their creative passions and do

something big with their summer vacation. The program

was the result of collaboration with Best Buy.

“I liked doing the hands-on things like seeing the parts

inside a computer, making my own music, videos

and photos. I can now help my dad. He is big into

computers,” said Naomi Morgan, 12, of Aurora. “I will

now understand what he is doing and maybe help him

build a computer.”

A group of Girl Scouts and the Denver-area Women of Distinction helped to build a greenhouse and harvested 400 pounds of vegetables for the Weinberg Food Pantry as part of a Girl Scouts Forever Green project.

Colorado Girl Scouts show their true colors: Forever GreenGirl Scouts across the state made a mark on Colorado’s environment through the

Girl Scouts Forever Green pilot project. The capstone event “Girl Scouts Go Dark” in

April invited girls to educate their school communities about energy consumption

during Lights Out lunches and other events.

The girls took charge and, through these events and other Forever Green projects,

nearly 7,000 people have pledged to reduce their energy consumption and another

10,000 have been educated about the environment.

During Earth Week in April, troops set up informational booths, prepared skits

and dances, organized classroom contests to reduce energy use, hung posters to

encourage recycling and held an off-the-grid sleepover to drive home the point that

this is our planet and we must care for it. One troop worked with their school for an

entire Lights Out week.

Girl Scouts made a huge impact in our state: Lights were off for 912.5 hours, energy

use decreased by 79,307 kWh, 6,591 people pledged to reduce their resource

consumption, 10,080 people were educated about the environment, 486 new

outdoor plants were planted and 1,322 square feet of new or improved outdoor

green space was created.

The girls in Troop 3964, based in Colorado Springs, made a video to inspire others

to reduce energy consumption. They also set up a blog where they collected energy

pledges from Frontier Elementary School families.

Over the summer, a group of Girl Scouts and the Denver-area Women of Distinction

honorees participated in harvesting produce and building a solar green house for

Ekar Farm in Denver. The 400 pounds of vegetables harvested by the women and

girls benefited the Weinberg Food Pantry at Jewish Family Services.

We’re not done yet. The Girl Scouts Forever Green initiative will continue with an

Earth Hour project this year and more Take Action projects leading up to the 100th

anniversary of Girl Scouting in 2012.

Carbon Valley girls put service first The 7th grade Girl Scouts in Troop 800 have sold a lot of cookies to pay for fun,

enlightening and service-oriented experiences over their six years together. A

project they put together this year has become their Silver Award service project

and has touched girls on the other side of the world.

The girls first learned how to make dresses from pillowcases and prayer dolls during

an overnight. When a friend of the troop took their dresses and dolls to orphan girls

in Uganda in summer 2010, the Girl Scouts in Troop 800 were hooked. After seeing

pictures of the girls wearing the dresses, they knew they must make more.

“I feel so good when I’m making dresses because I know that all of them are going to

go to girls who don’t have very much,” said Emmalee Zian.

Five of the girls in the troop set a goal of making 500 dresses and made this their

Silver Award project. Later they increased their goal to make 800 dresses in honor

of their troop number. They held workshops, recruited classes to help and made

pillowcase dress kits to share with other Girl Scouts troops, school groups, church

groups, friends and family. The girls created a blog (pillowcasestodresses.com)

where they update the world on their progress and continue to grow the project.

Dresses have been delivered to Uganda and Ethiopia. Dresses being made now are

going to Haiti and to women living in Kenyan prisons with their children.

As of February 2011, 734 dresses had been made. Their goal is clearly in sight.

“It’s just so amazing that us small town girls are really FOR REAL changing lives!!!”

Hailee Ewing wrote in the girls’ blog, “It really does feel good and I am so glad that

we did this! I will never forget this experience, it has been so special and something

most people don’t get.”

The girls in Troop 800 have grown as leaders

through this project.

“With each dress that we help make, it is

incredible to realize the impact our project is

making in the lives of others, including our own,”

they wrote.

Exciting STEM day Durango Girl Scouts collaborate with Fort Lewis College

In April, thanks to a collaboration with Fort

Lewis College, The Durango Discovery Museum,

Riverview Elementary School and Girl Scouts

of Colorado, 30 girls from Riverview worked

with Fort Lewis College students on projects such

as designing their dream house, making trashionista

fashions, building rockets and many other fun,

scientific events.

The program was such a success, it will become a

twice-yearly event in that area.

Centennial girls get confidence boost in Wyoming climbFor many, the start of middle school comes with mixed emotions. Excitement

and fear mingle as the milestone of leaving the comfort of elementary school and

entering a more grown-up world nears.

The Girl Scouts in Troop 1573, based in Centennial, have been on many trips

together and their travels often focus on adventure. In August 2010, the weekend

before starting middle school, the girls traveled to Vedauwoo, Wyo., where they

would face some serious rock climbing challenges with Colorado Mountain

Club guides.

“Some girls thought it was really scary and occasionally got stalled on the walls,

needing help from guides to guide them down,” they wrote after the trip. “Other

girls scampered up like squirrels and couldn’t get enough of it. We each seemed to

find what we were good at, either climbing or belaying, or both, and we spent the

entire day climbing away.”

The girls, who were starting at two separate middle schools on Monday, returned

home on Sunday night knowing that the middle school halls would be nothing

compared to climbing those Wyoming walls.
