What is BoardedUP you

ask?

BoardedUP is an opportunity for us to recognize the role of artists and the creativity of expression.!

BoardedUP is something of a tribute to favorite local artists and arts organizers that have expanded conventional ideas of who makes art and who views art, explored the distinction between public and private space, and have challenged the boundaries between sanctioned and unsanctioned displays of art.

BoardedUP started as a celebration of urban renewal and is still going strong. Boarded-up windows, normally a sign of defeat and

foreclosure, are transformed into expressive paintings through the our BoardedUP program.

The works of BoardedUP are diverse, challenging, beautiful, and inspiring. Though these works were designed to be viewed at street-level and to be accessible and engaging to passers-by on busy downtown Madison Avenue.

Again the event is on Friday, September 2nd from 5-9. We encourage you to come and support our artists and our programs!

If you would like more information on this event, please contact Bria Schultz, (518) 463-222 or email [email protected] Hope to see you there!

after-school programming beginsyouth arts & NEW dance program JUMP!Some kids love school, while others do not. One thing is for sure though, there is plenty of fun to be had at Grand Street Community Arts after the school day is over. This fall we will be offering two programs: The After-School Kids Club, and JUMP. Clubs will happen on alternating days Monday through Friday so kids can come to both.

JUMP is our new dance fitness class for kids, and will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-5:15PM. The After-School Kids Club will focus on creative arts, and be offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 3-5PM taught by qualified Grand Street Community Arts staff. We hope to see you there!

Classes will begin Monday, September 12th and follow the City School District of Albany’s calendar. For class rates or to fill out an application for classes, please email [email protected] or call 518-463-2222.

living walls albanythree day conference 9/16-9/18So maybe you’ve heard about Living Walls or maybe you haven’t, but as the dates draw nearer, we hope you get as excited as we are about this great project kicking off in the Capital District during the month of September.

What is Living Walls you ask? Well, it’s a project designed to raise awareness about the use of public space. It’s about exploring options that a smaller city like Albany has and giving the people here a chance to interact with public space as they never have before. During September 16-18, there will be a Lecture Series at the NYS Museum, performance art installations at 99 Pine Street, GSCA, and St. Joe’s, as well as over 30 mural artists creating beautiful, thought-provoking murals throughout the City of Albany and Rensellear. All of these events are put on with the intent to create an open dialogue between the people and city.

For more information, we encourage you to visit the website at: www.livingwallsalbany.com There will be a sculptural installation and performance art showcased during the conference at GSCA by Brooklyn artists Melanie Peterson and Daniel Tobias, and Boston artist Sarah Haze.

grand street eatsa great collaborative successAfter a bit of planning with the Chef’s Consortium and Chip Fasciana of Existing Artists, Grand Street Community Arts held their first Grand Street Eats, a new series GSCA is hoping to have four-times per year, displaying local talents of Albany artists while providing sustainable and locally sourced food and wine. Urban farmers, chefs, and vintners were on hand to talk about their gardens, wineries and restaurants, and how their products are incorporated into the reception.

The event held on August 25th was attended by over 75 individuals (we’re hoping for even more next time) and helped raise just under $1,500. A large portion of these proceeds benefit GSCA’s youth programming as well as the continued renovation of St. Anthony’s, helping make it a usable community center and exhibition space, year round.
