STRENGTH THROUGH UNITY

“Spain-another country” concept is becoming fashionable. June saw the beginning of the Dual Spain-Japan Year with a re-launch of the Span-ish-Japanese Bilateral Commission, of which Grupo Antolin is a mem-ber. Last July, the Spanish-Moroccan Business Encounter took place in Rabat to herald the visit of King Juan Carlos I, in which I participated on behalf of the Group. The VII Spain-China Forum will be held in Bei-jing in September and we will also be present there. All these encounters are a privileged framework for dialog, discussion, and the exchange of ideas between countries. Above all, these forums reinforce the idea that strength is achieved through unity and that combined efforts towards a common goal constitute an incentive for success.

Spain has many companies that are leaders in their sectors worldwide and that can act as real embassies, demonstrating quality and know-how. We can feel proud to know that our Group is considered one of these companies and that we are systematically chosen to represent Spain in a variety of forums. Clearly, our obligation as a company is to reveal the attributes of our country internationally and also to serve as a stimulus for the entire Spanish entrepreneurial network.

It was precisely on my last trip to the US that I was able to verify that Americans hold Spain in far higher regard than Spaniards themselves. It is important that we begin to believe in our strengths and to project that image abroad with confidence. That is why I especially agree with the slo-gan of the Famous Spanish Brands Forum “Together we go faster and fur-ther”. In our case, the “together” applies to all of our Group companies, and my wish is to see the spirit of these “Spain-another country” events apply equally well in the 25 countries where we are present.

In a globalized environment, the image of a country is a first rate com-petitiveness factor, the loss of which can have very negative effects on our companies. I encourage you to take up all the opportunities arising in our daily activities to promote the image of Spain and its strengths: industrial tradition, especially in the automotive sector, technological capacity, creative thinking, flexibility and, above all, a large dose of soli-darity. All of this will result in a better perception of our companies and, therefore, of their competitiveness. ▪

After a brief meeting, a visit of the Center for Innovation was conducted to show the Minister the Group’s latest innova-tions in automotive components in situ: interior linings and finishes, illumina-tion, advanced materials, and the prin-cipal development and validation tools.

During the visit, the Minister witnessed the technological advancement of Grupo Antolin, which has placed it among the 60 top automotive supplier companies worldwide.

The Chief Executive Oficer of Grupo An-tolin, José Manuel Temiño Estefanía, expressed his gratitude for the Ministry of Industry’s support to the automotive sector in Spain, and urged the Minister to continue promoting measures to im-prove the entrepreneurial environment. Mr. Temiño also highlighted the impor-tance of continuing to promote innova-tion, social dialog, and manufacturing plant flexibility in order to recover the competitiveness of Spanish industry. We must all make efforts to ensure the future of the automotive industry. ▪

The event, which took place on May 16th in the auditorium of the Evolution Forum in Burgos, was -according to Benavente (president of FAE)- “a recognition of entre-preneurial activity in the form of several individuals who serve as examples, inspira-tion, and role models to continue working and advancing as well as to get back on track after a setback when the need arises.”

José Manuel Temiño, CEO for 18 years of Grupo Antolin, stated that the award is the recognition of a team of profes-sionals who have placed the Group as the major Spanish manufacturer of car interior components. He also stated that “unrepeatable figures like Avelino and José Antolin were needed to achieve

business projects of this kind”. After an explanation of the company’s history, he summed up its success in one word: “Creativity”.

Other significant speakers included Santi-ago Aparicio, President of the Confedera-tion of Business Organizations in Castilla y León (CECALE). Mr. Aparicio examined the notion of strengthening Cecale to make it a “single voice”, giving weight to provincial groups and “for the design of the new financing model”.

We would like to conclude by congratu-lating our CEO on the award received.

The Confederation of Business Associations (FAE), handed the highest awards for 2013 to José Manuel Temiño and the Bacigalupe Hermanos company.

The Mayor of the capital city of Burgos, Javier Lacalle, delivered the FAE de Oro for best manager to José Manuel Temiño, CEO of the company as recognition to a career linked to one of the most important business conglomerates in Burgos.

A lesson you have learnt from the business world The importance of team work.

A piece of advice for young peopleA desire to learn and the courage to accept challenges, to overcome the logical vertigo of new experiences. I am surprised by the extent to which young people with potential impose limits on themselves.

What you value most in a collaboratorEnthusiasm, without a doubt. Significant goals can be accomplished with enthusiasm. Without it, however, even the most competent collaborator can only expect work to be done properly.

Is ‘man good by nature’ (Rousseau) or ‘is a man a wolf to a man’ (Hobbes)?It is ambitious to try to simplify us to that extent. We are complex in nature and very interesting because of it. I would rather not imagine how desperately boring the world would be if we all could be defined in 4 or 5 words.

A book and a film that you would recommend to your colleagues Book: The Radical Optimist, by Matt Ridley. It is worth reading, a documented ray of hope regarding the future of this planet and its inhabitants. Movie: Play it again, Sam, hilarious because of its Woody Allen moments.

Please a phrase or a quote which reflects your philosophy of life I’ll avoid the temptation of borrowing a phrase. I’ll only say that I aspire to living life to its fullest. I’m the kind of person who thinks it is important to try to make each day different and enrich it somehow with personal and professional experiences. I think it’s a crime to waste the only life we have by falling into a routine.

In DepthWhat has been your experience in Grupo Antolin?

I began as a product engineer in the tech-nical office that used to be in the Grupo Antolin-ARA facility.

A couple of years later, a little after mov-ing to the Central, I moved abroad to Grupo Antolin-Ingéniérie Sièges (GAINS), our technical center in Roche la Molière. I worked as Project Manager there and re-turned three years later to Burgos, where I became Project Purchase Manager for seats.

I went on to being the Product Engineer-ing Manager in Burgos, then Engineering Director and since April I’ve been Director of the Seat Business Unit.

Could you explain how it is structured the Seats Business Unit?

The structure of the Business Unit is ba-sically that of a traditional layout insofar as the number and responsibilities of the various departments.

However, there is one particularity as re-gards other business units. Only two of the five departments are located in Bur-gos. Two of these, Sales Management and Engineering, are in GAINS and the third, which is Industrial Management, is in Vigo. The main objective is for certain departments to be closer to where the “action” is.

Seats are one of the most complete products made by Grupo Antolin, in the sense that they include a variety of expertises. What is the most complex part about conceiving and developing a seat?

The truth is that it is not easy. But, looking at it from a positive point of view, that’s what makes it more interesting.

The problems that affect the external ele-ments, covers, foams and plastic housing are the same as those that affect other interior parts: appearance, sets, comfort and so on. But the hardest technical chal-lenges are posed by the metal.

The challenge consists in developing kin-ematics that really constitutes an added value in the customer’s eyes. After that, what is needed is to use the space con-ditions imposed by the kinematics and comfort to come up with an architecture and mechanisms as unobtrusive, light and competitive as possible.

Likewise, we can’t forget that seats are es-sential for the safety of the occupant; they are subject to multiple technical regula-tions and a significant list of requirements from each customer as regards crash and functional tests, etc. This makes the de-sign more complex and requires it to be absolutely robust.

What are the implications of the program for the new Mercedes Vito-Viano for the company?

Having obtained this project is undoubt-edly very good news for our Business Unit. This project, along with the replacement of the Citroën C4 Picasso, which we have just launched successfully, and the recent-ly nominated KO implies the renewal of a significant part of our main industrial ac-tivities. This improves the starting point to face the future with greater optimism and implies a firm foundation to achieve the goals set out in our strategic plan.

On the other hand, I want to highlight the special circumstances that surrounded the period prior to obtaining Vito-Viano pro-duction. I want to take this opportunity to thank the team that participated in the ten-der for their effort and for always maintain-ing the necessary enthusiasm for the task, in spite of all the difficulties.

And the challenge did not end with obtain-ing the project. Project implementation is a serious ongoing challenge for the team, giv-en the enormous planning restraints that we are up against.

What new strategic lines are being contemplated to respond to current sustainability demands: reducing weight, recyclable materials and increasing comfort and perceived quality?

Our lines of work are mainly focused on the frame; on exploring ways to obtain an ar-chitecture that is lighter, easier to manufac-ture, more compact and so on.

That is why part of our work deals with ma-terials. In this regard, we continue believing in the use of light alloys as a solution to re-duce weight, although we study other pos-sibilities too, such as hybrids or composites.

However, improvement in materials has its limits. That is why we always try to find more “intelligent” designs that allow us to improve our effort requirements and obtain functional integration.

What are your goals for the next few years? What will the future bring?

Our goal should be to increase the growth of Business Unit sales, while obtaining a return that allows us to do so successfully.

What is Grupo antolin’s competitive advantage versus its competitors?

I would say that it is our capacity to listen to the customer and to use our imagination to propose technical solutions. The combination of both makes us ideal partners when it comes to exploring new possibilities for functionality, spacing and comfort in vehicles equipped with non-standard seats. I honestly think that customers appreciate the possibility of discussing engineering with us starting with a blank page.

Among other things, this will require us to continue increasing our capacity to pro-vide market solutions, increasing the effi-ciency of our project management and the competitiveness of our plants

Your greatest achievement in the company.

Frankly, I don’t think that anything I have done deserves consideration as a mile-stone. I hope my highest achievement is still to come. Up until now, I think I have simply known how to respond reasonably well in most cases to the various missions I have been entrusted with. I have been able to do my small part for the Group’s seat division.

A failure? What did it teach you?

I don’t know whether it should be classified as a failure or not, but I remember the par-ticularly hard experience a few years ago of not being selected for an expert phase by a customer that was important for us.

That showed me that our position in the market required that we systematically give 120% in everything we do to pose a real threat to the competition. ▪

AUTOgraphWhy did you decide to work in the automotive industry?At the time, it was not the automotive sector that attracted me, but Grupo Antolin. The possibility of working in a company like this was what brought me into this industry.

Your dream carIf I have to dream, why not dream of driving one of James Bond’s cars, especially one of the Aston Martins. The equipment those cars carry is a delight.

Your favorite color for carsI don’t have one. It may be coincidence, but my cars have always been a different color, up to now. I think each model has its own.

An important figure to be highlighted from the automotive industry Mentioning Ford is a must, due to their contribution to the industry. However, given that I am an engineer, I would also like to mention Ferdinand Porsche.

What car-related intention has impressed you the most? The airbag was one of them in its time, without a doubt. When they began to speak about it, it sounded like science fiction.

What would you have liked to invent? A truly comfortable seat. We’re still at it.

Your motto behind the wheelCombine it with music. I enjoy driving twice as much listening to music at the right volume.

What was your first car?A Peugeot 106 that I was able to drive when my turn came in the family. Prophetic from my perspective now, given the close relationship we have in seats with PSA Peugeot Citroën.

What will be driving in 20 years time?I think we will drive less and use shared transport more often. When we use our vehicle, it will provide driving assistance that will make driving a more passive experience. From our perspective, we may see this as an opportunity. We should integrate functionalities in our components that make the experience more exciting.

The future should bring a Business Unit with

sales figures that are significantly higher than todays and a

foot-print that is much less local. We have to be able to know how

to accompany our customers to regions where we are not yet

present.

This site has been selected in early 2008 in order to respond to increasing customers’ requests for lowering production costs and also, for following the development of the automotive production toward Eastern Europe by getting closer to custo-mers’ facilities.

In 2008, an empty building has been lea-sed, equipped and prepared for producing with 6 assembly lines for PSA Peugeot Ci-troën products with 82 employees.

In 2009, 16 additional production lines were transferred and, the first ISO TS 16949 certification was granted at Sibiu. During that year, the implementation of a logistics team allowed then direct ship-ments to customers.

In 2011, ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) capa-bility was implemented in a restricted area, enabling the assembly of electronic sub-as-semblies on lighting products such as Day Running Lamps, overhead consoles, etc.

Sibiu is producing in 2013 almost all types of interior and exterior lighting products such as Dome Lamps, Glove Box Lamps, Trunk Lamps, Door Lamps, Central High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL), Side Mar-kers, License Plate Lamps, Day Running Lamps (DRL).

2013 is also the year of migration to SAP in replacement of MAPICS ERP system (for-merly used before acquisition by Grupo

This project has been initiated in 2011, beeing beneficiary of grants from EU Funds complementary with GA-CML contribution. The Project consists to start–up in the existing rented plant with 10 Injection presses, allowing us to produce a part of our plastic molding consumption. Huge resources and in-volvement was implyied in preparing all utilities and auxiliaries equipments ne-cessary to start-up the process in good condition, installing a new transformer of 1600 Kva, new chiller for presses, new centralised drying system with 20 drying tanks which allow us to dedicate raw materials to each mould, a new cra-ne of 5 tons, new installations for ener-gy, water, air compressed, distribution of raw materials,...

Obviously, installing such a new works-hop was challenging, but the Romanian / French team overpassed all expected and unexpected difficulties and finalised the implementation according with timing plan and objectives.

By 2014, the development of sales requires additional surface which cannot be imple-mented in this facility. This is why a new green field facility is under construction in order to replace the existing rented plant.

This new plant will be built with a surfa-ce of 13 000 m², on a field located close to the airport in the same industrial area. By end of Q1, 2014, the current plastic in-jection workshop and its equipment will be implemented in this new facility with a total of 20 presses (10 new additional presses from 200 to 470 tons bi-color).

13 new assembly lines will also be installed and assembly lines located in the current Sibiu plant will be progressively moved to the new facility. End of 2014 should see a fully new operational site with a floor ca-pacity estimated at 100 assembly lines.

part of Grupo Antolin in 2001 and is currently the Engineering

Manager for Japan and korea. prior to

this position, he held positions for the

What led you to make the decision to move to Korea as an expatriate?

During my last year at university, we re-ceived a visit from a former student who had been working in Malaysia for years. The impact of his lecture and solid ar-guments made me feel that some day I would also pack my bags and move to Asia. When I first entered Grupo Antolin, I had the opportunity of working for the company in Germany and I didn’t give it a second thought. I had achieved part of my dream. Asia would have to wait... but, as it appears, not for long.

What has your new position and country of residence given you in return?

I know the answer to that one: a capacity to adapt. There is such a thing as cultur-al shock, you have to be prepared for it. Here, everything is different. In every way. That is why you always have to sharpen your senses and not be afraid to ask when the time comes.

What surprised you the most when you came into contact with Korean society?

Korean society has great respect for tradi-tions and civil values. At the same time, it is a dynamic society with a strong charac-ter. In general, I was surprised by the en-ergy, friendliness, and laughter of the Ko-reans. That laughter makes me feel closer to Spain.

What about the Grupo Antolin-Korea team?

All my experience has been positive up to now. Their level of professionalism, inde-pendence, and capacity for work is admi-rable. These factors are only comparable to their human qualities. The working environment is unmatched and any ex-cuse is good to do group activities outside working hours. It’s a pleasure to work with people of that stature.

What impression of Spanish workers do they have abroad?

I once asked a Korean colleague what came to mind when he heard the words ‘Spain’ or ‘Spanish’. Without hesitation, he answered: “that they play soccer well”. From then on, I never asked anyone that question.

Being so far away, what do you miss the most?

When you make the decision to move this far away, you have to assume that your life will be different from the life you led in your native country. From that point on, there are tools we can use to stay in touch with relatives and friends. Food has also become international, so you can purchase a wide range of prod-ucts that are familiar. That doesn’t mean that when I return to Spain, I don’t fully enjoy a good platter of lamb, Barcina cheese, Ribera wine, and Jubalcoy orang-es for desert.

Have you ever regretted making this decision?

Not for a single moment. I feel very fortu-nate for being able to live this experience and right now I am in no hurry to return. There is still a lot to be done.

What can a Korean contribute to a Spaniard and vice versa?

Koreans are probably more tempered and strict than we are. However, at the same time Spaniards are probably more imagi-native and flexible. Everyone ends up win-ning when we work together.

What does this city have that is special for business purposes?

Seoul is the headquarters of companies like Hyundai, Kia, Samsung, LG, SK, Hy-nix, Posco and on and on. The city is very dynamic and full of opportunities. It boasts a consolidated and strong finan-cial and industrial sector.

ticularities. All you need is to identify, respect, and make the most of them. In the case of Korea, as with most Asian countries, it is recommendable to go into business with a local partner that knows the language and can clear up the air of mistrust that envelops foreign companies a priori. Once that barrier is overcome, you have to go to work to fulfill customer demands seriously and without delay. This is the only way to gain their respect. I can sum it up in a slogan, if you want: trust, politeness, and respect.

How long have you been in the city? Why did you move?

I am responsible for engineering in Grupo Antolin offices in Seoul and To-kyo, so I have to move from one city to the other, depending on circumstanc-es. I landed in Asia in May of last year, motivated partly by the unknown and by the enormous potential of the re-gion for our company.

What does the city offer you?

I would say that, other than serenity, it offers everything. Cultural diversity, lei-sure opportunities, marvelous walks, and an endless capacity for surprise each day.

We should remember that we are talking about a city with more than ten million inhabitants and an unemployment rate of only 3.1%.

The metropolis is so large that the gov-ernment has founded a city out of noth-ing called Sejong City to try to decongest the capital. About 100 km from Seoul, the city is in fact where several ministries are headquartered, and there are plans to in-crease the number of additional official institutions located in it.

As regards the automotive sector, it is helpful to remember that South Korea is the fifth largest manufacturer of vehicles in the world and the home to companies like Hyundai-Kia and Renault Samsung. All the Hyundai-Kia models are designed in Korea, as well as several Renault mod-els, such as the new Laguna, for which Grupo Antolin is a supplier.

What type of business transactions take place? What are the relationships like, how is business carried out?

All in all, business is carried out like an-ywhere else. Each country has its par-

What were the main problems, both personal and professional, that you encountered at your arrival? How did you adapt?

The decision-making process to move to Asia was really fast. Hardly two months went by from the moment the opportuni-ty called at my door and the day I landed here to find a place to live. The main chal-lenge was trying to understand how to address the local intermediaries and be-ing capable of presenting the company’s arguments clearly and convincingly.

As regards housing, all the merit belongs to the Grupo Antolin’s wonderful team, both in Korea and Japan. As for the rest, all I need is to be close to my wife to adapt to any environment.

What other practical aspects should I take into account?

In my mind, Korea is a country that it is easy to live in. What I mean is: it is a con-solidated democracy where the essen-tial services (and others too) function as well as in the most developed West-ern countries. It is a safe country with a high quality of life and very friendly peo-ple. Nonetheless, there is always paper-work to do. An example is acquiring your work visa. Some people come into the

country thinking that they will get their next month’s pay in a Korean bank, but it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes, it takes up to two months to get your pa-pers in order and only then can you open an account in a local bank to get your paycheck. Life abroad is somewhat in-convenient until that personal “financial stability” is achieved.

Other aspects of life in Korea appear with time, like the need for your own stamp (dojang, in Korean) to carry out official transactions, the problems encountered for a local bank to issue you a credit card in your name, or the peculiarities of Korean food, which is delicious but needs getting used to.

Finally, do you have any advice for people who are considering continuing their professional careers abroad?

First, to be honest with yourself and ask yourself if you are really ready to give up your current way of life to face the challenge of a career abroad. Once that self-evaluation is overcome, I can assure that the experience is tremen-dously gratifying and will remain with you for the rest of your life. Besides, it is addictive. ▪

2 I work in the assembly of compo-nents, dashboard trays, mirrors, etc. for the Ford Mondeo. There are 4 colors: linen, light limes, light limestone & light stone grey, and two consoles: long and short. You see what console you have to assemble on the autocontrol. It’s a complicated job, I do 31 boxes per day and on my first day I did 4.

3 The friendly work atmosphere and the fact that it’s an easy-going job. The physical effort isn’t too great and the con-ditions are pretty good. We work in shifts, which leaves you with free time.

4 Nothing, actually. Some time ago we worked on another machine, the 22, with a very narrow path. They’ve made it larger now and it’s very good.

1 I have been here six years in total.

2 I work in the Mechanisms Section, in the manual assembly of consoles for the Ford Galaxy and C-Max. I handle between 12 and 15 parts, depending on the model. This job demands dexterity and speed but, com-pared to others, it’s not a hard job.

3 The work atmosphere, coworkers; I’m delighted.

4 I’d do away with late shifts (from 3pm to 11pm) although I know it’s not possible if you are working with injectors. Actually, we meet in the UET (Work Area Unit) where we make proposals. If some-thing makes sense, it’s implemented.

5 For Christmas 2012 they called us in to work on the 26th. As the plant is closed around the 22nd or 23rd of December, it was only my coworker Carmele, a maintenance group, and myself. The lights went off and for two hours, from 6pm to 8pm, we had to work under the forklift lights.

2 We substitute people so that they can take breaks in the panels area, involv-ing about 14 machines. There are usually two of us, adapting to the needs. There are two breaks per workday, one for 15 minutes and the other for 10 minutes. They work in three shifts: morning, after-noon, and night. We deliver material to the various posts: clips, wrapping, foam, etc.; whatever they need.

3 The work atmosphere and the fact that it is a small company. I move around more, I know more people, I’m happy.

4 The problem we have is space, it’s a little tight because production has in-creased over recent years.

The parts come from an external supplier. They are taken to the belt and the robot takes them and places them on the trays. They are placed in the mold, injected, and checked. In each shift between 3,500 and 4,000 parts are produced for each side. I check them visually, and place them in the boxes which are stacked (24 boxes in each pallet) and taken GA-Dapsa (Burgos) and GA-Lusitania (Portugal). If the parts are defective I put them aside.

3 That they pay me on time at the end of the month.

Grupo Antolin participates in the XII University of Burgos employment forum & the FiBEST International

The twelfth edition of the University of Burgos Employment Forum took place on May 22, 2013 on the 3rd floor of the Evolu-tion Forum of Burgos, an opportunity for Grupo Antolin and other companies to reach out to students and recent gradu-ates from the University.

In line with the initiative described above, Grupo Antolin also has participated in the XIV FiBEST INTERNATIONAL 2013 Employ-ment Forum where an information stand was also placed to provide information re-garding the company’s work to more than 500 students of technical degrees from 34 countries throughout Europe.

FiBEST International is a completely novel type of Employment Forum, held for the first time in Spain on April 19 in Valladolid. The main goal of our partic-ipation was to recruit profiles for future editions of the “Engineers Farm” pro-gram.

Grupo Antolin is proud of the ongoing collaboration between the University and the company. It allows students to receive practical training programs in the organi-zation (both national and international), thus encouraging and promoting entry in the job market for graduates from the University of Burgos. ▪

Grupo Antolin organized a stand in the exhibition area to offer information of

its activities and products to students and graduates and thus contact any

candidates of interest. Among the hundreds of young adults who attended

the event, nearly 500 showed interest in Grupo Antolin’s stand, where they

were attended to individually to collect their CVs and expand the relevant

information concerning their profiles.

BeHAViorAl oBSerVAtionSThe Project began in the Iberian Peninsula with two theoretical and practical work-shops intended for the managers of our companies.

In 2013, these workshops were held in April in the USA and June in Mexico, with the participation of managers, produc-tion supervisors, and other department heads.

In all cases, the results were very encour-aging, backed by the recognition of man-agers of the value and importance of the concepts taught. Managers were mostly impressed by the dialog methodology, recognition of positive traits, and com-mitments included in the Behavioral Ob-servations tool.

After the manager awareness stage, it was essential to involve the remaining levels of the hierarchy. Therefore, two workshops were organized this year in GA-Aragusa and GA-Ardasa for intermedi-ate managers.

To do so, we are currently working in the Corporate Improvement Area of the DCI and the Occupational Health and Safety Area of Human Resources to integrate Behavioral Observations in the Kamishi-bai tool of our production system.

We are convinced that the visible lead-ership of Management in the use of the Kamishibai tool will serve to strengthen the Occupational Health and Safety cul-ture of Grupo Antolin. ▪

Like other polyurethanes, this type of foam is due to the reaction of two chemical components, polyol compo-nent (Component A) and isocyanate component (Component B). A polym-erization reaction ensues when these are mixed in the proper proportion; in other words, a three-dimensional structure of polyurethane is formed, with its characteristic properties: Semi-rigid, open-cell foam.

All the raw materials that have been used until now to manufacture polyols and isocyanates come from oil, which will continue to increase in price due to higher consumption of raw materials by developing countries (mainly China and India). Sustainable long-term produc-tion requires the availability of renewa-ble sources of raw materials with short renewal cycles. From this perspective, vegetables have become a very interest-ing family from which to obtain these products. As such, polyols from natural sources, also known as NOP (acronym for Natural Oil Polyol) are used with in-creasing frequency.

The production process, starting with natural oils, is simpler and safer (no generation of fumes, toxic waste or undesired sub-products), requires less manufacturing space than petrochemi-

cal polyols and much less energy (lower production of CO2). In other words, a process that is much more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Moreover, due to its greater hydrophobicity (lower water absorption), its dimensional stability is very good under high humidity conditions.

Grupo antolin has developed a “green” polyurethane foam formulation to man-ufacture headliners, in which the most com-mon component of the polyol is an NOP made of 90% “bio” product obtained from ricin seeds , and therefore, from a renewable source that does not compete with food for

humans (contrary to the NOPs made from soya oil that are used to manufacture certain flexible foams).

On the other hand, our foam presents an additional advantage: It has 30% less den-sity than other NOP foams, so the impact on the final weight of the roof is considera-ble (up to 15% less weight in the final part).

Apart from satisfying the specifications of our customers, these kinds of NOP polyols are known to minimize environmental impact, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the final foam product. One additional advantage is, of course, its use as a stable economic alternative versus oil price fluc-tuations.

After fine-tuning our green system, the company is currently manufacturing two headliner models in Grupo Antolin-Euro-trim (Burgos), Citroën C-Élysée and peu-geot 301, with very good results; the main characteristic of this polyurethane system is that the foam lends a high degree of rigid-ity to the final part, despite its low density. Needless to say, this characteristic is also highly esteemed by our customers.

The market has a growing interest in more ecological solutions, as can be witnessed by the models with high-density green foam produced in our French Grupo Antolin-IGA plant, such as the peugeot 2008 and the renault Zoe.

We will update this information in future is-sues, with further details regarding the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of this foam. ▪

The USDA has proposed that a product be classified as “bio” if its content in raw materials from a natural source is over 8%. This requirement is more than satisfied by the new foam with polyol NOP manufactured by Grupo Antolin, since its “bio” percentage is higher than 15% (per kilo of final foam).

The first Spanish-Japanese Bilateral Busi-ness Cooperation meeting was held on June 11 in the Real Casa de la Moneda (Spanish Royal Mint) in Madrid. This meeting was or-ganized by the Chambers of Commerce, in collaboration with the Foreign Commerce

Institute (ICEX), the Spanish Confederation of Entrepreneurial Associations (CEOE) and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce. The event drew together companies from both countries with the goal of promoting busi-ness and investment relations.

in Mexico, the expedition made a last stop at a port

on the Guadalquivir River: Coria del río, a town

in the province of Seville, where the welcome was so warm that part of the group decided to stay. a

friendly relationship that has lasted for 400 years.

Many celebrations of the Dual Year will be held in this

town, where the last name of numerous families is

“Japan”, in remembrance of their Japanese ancestry.

The inauguration was presided by His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince of Japan and His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias and attended by numerous authorities and businessmen, among which was the company’s vice president, ernesto antolin. Grupo Antolin has also foreseen to commemorate this Dual Year in 2014, we will inform you opportunely about it.

The Spain-Japan Dual Year falls within the framework of the strategic promotion of Marca España, with a threefold aim: to project a modern and updated im-age of Spain, to generate new economic opportunities for both countries and to promote a more dynamic and diversified relationship between the two societies. ▪

Grupo Antolin in Burgos hosted a meeting of Grupo Líder 10 of the Family Forum (EFCyL) to introduce the participants to the strategy, products, business mod-el and business management implemented by Grupo

Antolin. Grupo Líder 10 consists of 14 young members (10 successors of family companies and 4 students of Family Company Studies).

The Family Forum was established in 2000 by the Castilla y León Family Company Association to provide guidance and information for all young people per-taining to family companies in the region. It now to-tals more than 100 members aged between 18 and 35. Noteworthy among the Forum’s activities are visits to prestigious companies and meetings with important individuals in the fields of business and economics.

Grupo Antolin supplies new NT 500 Nissan truck

There is a wide range of standard serial equipment for the three finishes and all versions come with driver seat suspension.

Grupo antolin-ara (Burgos) is supplying the complete driver, central, and passenger seats of the new NT500 truck. This vehicle will be manu-factured entirely at Nissan’s specialized industrial vehicle plant in Avila (Spain) and will be on the market at the end of 2013. Its main destination will be the European market.

With the launch of this mid-size Truck, Nissan reaffirms its intention of becoming one of the leaders in the European market for light-weight indus-trial vehicles.

The new NT500 offers the highest level of quality and comfort in the mid-size truck category. The cabin interior is spacious, containing multi-ple compartments as well as practical equipment. In addi-tion, the driver’s seat includes a wide variety of systems (re-clining, height adjustable, sus-pension, and heating) making the driver’s life onboard more pleasant on one hand and the rides of passengers more com-fortable on the other.

The Ranjangaon plant of Grupo Anto-lin-Pune received, on 19th June, the quality award “Bronze” from our customer Bajaj Auto Limited during “Bajaj Auto Vendors Association” Waluj Convention 2013.

This is the motto for the Spanish-Moroccan Business Meeting held last June 16th in a hotel in Rabat, Mo-rocco. The event was inaugurated by King Juan Car-los, who was on an official working visit to Morocco, at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

In his speech, King Juan Carlos highlighted the im-portance of “forging even closer commercial ties” between Spain and Morocco and praised the merits of Spanish multinational companies and their expe-rience and success in foreign investments.

Among the participants in the event, which included 5 Spanish ministers and 9 ex-Foreign Affairs ministers (accompanying His Majesty on the official trip), were the leading entrepreneurs of the neighboring country and 27 managers of Spanish companies, one of whom was ernesto antolin, Vice President of the company.

On May 16, GA-Eurotrim received a visit from the Mercedes (Daimler) Depart-ment of Improvement. The group con-sisted of 16 members of the department who received training in the Mercedes Production System (MPS), as well as sev-eral supervisors and trainers. The group is on a training tour consisting of visits to several suppliers to improve their knowl-edge of how to apply corporate improve-

ment techniques, strategic production planning and Lean Manufacturing activ-ities in general.

During their visit to Grupo Antolin, they were shown the strategies followed by the company as regards Total Quality Man-agement (TQM), Delta, Six Sigma and the Production System (PS). After a brief tour of the installations in the R+D+i center, the

group visited the GA-Eurotrim plant. Their aim was to become more familiar with its products and processes, as well as with the organization and implementation of tools such as the 5S, the red table, standardiza-tion, the Kanban and the Kamishibai.

Mercedes expressed their gratitude for the attention received and the very positive im-pression that Grupo Antolin made on them.

Grupo Antolin participates in a POST-ACCIDENT Systems working groupGrupo antolin is a member of the ae-nor (spanish standards and Certifi-cation association) post-accident sys-tems Working Group.

As the name indicates, the purpose of this group is to prepare the standards that will apply to protection systems for vehicle oc-cupants after the accident has occurred.

Grupo Antolin’s mission in this working group is to contribute its experience in components for automobile interiors, including the safety systems that the company applies to many of its products. This contribution is made from the perspective of a TIER 1 supplier with design, validation and production capacity and in combination with vehicle construc-tion companies and a selection of inventors, who also participate in this initiative.

The intention is to obtain standards for the extraction of vehicle occupants after the accident by taking advantage of the seat structure and standards regarding photo-chemical illumination of the vehicle interi-or. Although these systems are still in their development stage, the working group intends to prepare the basic framework on which to build and develop the standards and implement them in the future.

CEAGA persons networkGrupo antolin-vigo and Grupo an-tolin-pGa are members of the Cluster of Automotive Companies of Galicia (CEAGA). This cluster was founded in 1997, and is currently developing a series of projects for strategic management purposes as part of its 2012-2015 plan of action. Among these projects is the Per-sons Network Project. The goals of the Persons Network are:

· To provide the HR collective with a forum to share experiences, practical improve-ments and knowledge.

· To encourage the generation of synergies between cluster companies in the man-agement and personal development fields.

The work performed by this Persons Net-work is carried out in 4 groups, each of which deals with a specific area: training, flexibility, absenteeism and ergonomics.

Grupo Antolin-Vigo and PGA participate in the flexibility, absenteeism and er-gonomics groups. Attendance at these Persons Network groups is considered highly important and beneficial to estab-lish benchmarking based on knowledge of and management development with other companies in the sector.

ANTOLIN-CIE visits Grupo Antolin-AraIn the month of June, GA-Ara (Burgos) received a visit from our colleagues at CIE Automotive in the Czech Republic who arrived with the intention of completing a thorough training plan over a period of three weeks. The scheme uses as a benchmark the scheme of Dupont Chemical Company, recognised as the leaders in Europe for

Health and Safety practice, using simi-lar processes to 5S and Total Quality. The Sunderland plant is fully integrated into this culture, with all employees trained through a Cascading Auditing process from the Plant Manager to leading oper-ators, rigorous assessments of incidents (that could have been accidents) and the promotion of the mind set that everyone is responsible for their own actions. It is through this process and high degree of effort and support from the staff that the zero lost time has been achieved and resulted in the award being presented fol-lowing the Quarterly Directors review.

ASton MArtin celebrates its 100th birthday

The British Company Aston

Martin has a lot to celebrate

in 2013. We want to join in

the celebration by going

through its 100 years of

history. The company was

established in 1913 by

Robert Bamford and Lionel

Martin and later became

known as ‘Bamford & Martin

lTD’. The name ‘Aston Martin’

was adopted afterwards,

when Martin won the Aston

Hill race in England.

Financial problems plagued the com-pany in the 1920s and caused it to close in 1925, although it was rescued a year later. The brand began to win a series of car races that increased its reputation in engineering and design. By the 1950s it had become very successful in racing competitions.

Its reputation was also consolidated out-side the race tracks; the Aston Martin DB5, called “the most beautiful car in the world”, entered into production in 1963.

In 1972, Aston Martin changed hands once again and launched the V8 that same year. Only three years later, it was rescued by a consortium, under which it re-launched the Lagonda, revitalized as the younger sister of the Aston Martin. The ‘80s saw a change of owners and the debut of the V8 Vantage Zagato model. In 1987, Ford purchased 75% of Aston Martin shares and the V8 Volante appeared the same year in ‘The Living Daylights’. The Virage model appeared a year later.

The DB was resurrected in

1993 with the launch of the

DB7 at the new Wykham

Mill plant, and ForD took

the reins of the company.

In the ‘90s the DB5 also starred in ‘Golden Eye’ and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’. In 1998, the company receives the Queen’s Award for its contribution to the economy of the United Kingdom.

Two important milestones for the com-pany occurred in 2001: the production of Aston Martin DB7 number 5,000 and the launch of the V12 Vanquish, the car that would lead a new technological era and be driven by Pierce Brosnan in ‘Die Another Day’.

Following the success of this model were the DB6 and DB6 Volante in 1965 and 1966.

Another chapter in the

history of the company

began in 2007, when

it was sold to two

international investment

firms: Investment Dar and

Adeem Investment.

The year 2009 became one of the most active in product development in the company’s recent history. It saw the launches of the V12 Vantage and DBS Volante as well as the One-77, billed the most powerful car in the world and win-ner at its debut as a prototype in the Con-corso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este, in Italy.

In the 2001 Motor Show of Geneva, As-ton Martin presented its small Cygnet, designed for city driving, confirming production that same year following an enthusiastic popular response.

The year 2012 saw the arrival of a new hero, the Vanquish, combining design, technology, and the most advanced en-gineering to create simply the best As-ton Martin in history. The new DB9 was revealed only 3 months later. ▪

aston martin decided to celebrate its 100th birthday in Dubai with a unique show. A helicopter was used to land the Aston Martin Vanquish Centenary Edition on the helicopter port of the luxurious Burj Al Arab Hotel, the fourth highest hotel in the world.

Created to celebrate the company’s 100th birthday, 2013 saw the birth of the Aston Martin CC100, a concept that reflects the inheritance of sporty features and exceptional design throughout 100 years of history. Inspired in the past, present, and future, it combines the spirit of the legendary DBR1 of 1959 with the most advanced materials.
