Sterilizers, Dryers, andPharmaceutical Ovens
GruenbergA Lunaire Company
Working into the wee hours of the night was never
a problem when Gruenberg developed his first
drying ovens. Nor is it today. Dedication to new
approaches remains a corporate passion.
GruenbergA Lunaire Company
Proven technologySince 1932, Gruenberg has designed and manufacturedhigh quality custom and standard pharmaceuticalsterilizers, dryers and continuous process ovens.
Today, pursuing a philosophy of uncompromisingperformance, Gruenberg has emerged as a leader inthe manufacturing of Class 100 and heat processingequipment worldwide, including isolators, barriersystems, clean room ovens and chilling tunnels.
ISO 9001 CertifiedThe Gruenberg quality system is certified to theprestigious ISO-9001 quality standard. Not surprising:
Gruenberg employees have always used aprogressive quality system to verify eachstage of construction. And, Gruenbergcontinues to research and test compo-nents and designs to improve perfor-mance. We are dedicated to bringing youthe latest in technology, performance, andreliability. Quality control is the criticalpath in the manufacture of Gruenbergpharmaceutical equipment.
Choose contemporary design without sacrificing old-world craftsmanship and attention to detail.
We machine stainless steelcasters here because noone else makes them.(Makes you wonder whatthe other guys use.)
GruenbergConsider the fact that
you can often get acustom oven designedand built by Gruenbergfor what others chargefor an off-the-shelfmachine.
Over the years,Gruenberg has evolved asa premier builder ofcustomer-specificapplications. Our experi-ence in designing customsystems translates intoreasonable prices.
The result is a superiorpiece of equipment thatgives more materialcontent, more long-termreliability, and moresatisfaction.
Gruenberg enjoys oneof the highest customerretention rates of anypharmaceutical ovenmanufacturer in theworld by offeringcomprehensive propos-als, realistic schedules, and timely deliveries.Effective service before, during, and after everypurchase has earnedGruenberg an extensive
list of satisfiedcustomers.
Exceptionalcraftsmanship,
proven reliability anddurability, and completebuild-to-order capabilityare just a few of thereasons to specifyGruenberg.
Chilling tunnels forhot-fill are an additionalproduct, as are a number ofcontinuous conditioning systems.
Full touch screenprogramming andmonitoring
When no off-the-shelfparts are available instainless steel,Gruenberg machinestheir own, as withthese door latches.
Or note the fully-adjustable hingeblocks, machinedfrom a block of304 stainless steel.
Radius corners andslope-to-drain arecombined in thisparticularlychallengingfabrication task.
Gruenberg usesfully welded heatertubes to keep allelectrical connec-tions exterior to thechamber.
Even belt guards areroutinely fabricatedfrom stainless steel.
SterilizersLaboratory, Cabinet, Truck InWhether standard or custom, every sterilizer providessimple operation, precise control, and even heatdistribution. Flexibility in options allows a custom unitto be built for standard prices.
CONSTRUCTIONThough flexible in design, Gruenberg sterilizers are rigidwhere it counts: in construction. All units are builtaround a welded structural steel frame for long termdurability. No panel joints are used. Instead, a unitized
construction is incorporatedto prevent heat loss andcontamination. Between theinner and outer walls, 4" ofhigh performance insulationhelps retain heat.
The exterior of the oven isconstructed of 16 and 18gauge 304 stainless steel witha #4 polish to withstandfrequent washdowns. Theinterior is constructed of304L, or if required, 316L. Allinterior seams are sealed bycontinuous heliarc welding.
Interior 3/4" radius corners are optional, along withother grades of stainless and finishes up to #8.
TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITYStandard sterilizers are rated for 250°C depyrogenation.Multiple heater banks are designed to bring the Ioad tosterilization temperature quickly and hold it economically.A digital proportioning controller will hold the tempera-ture with a uniformity of ±5°C. That’s 10°C tighter unifor-mity than the generally accepted CGMP of ±15°C.
AIRFLOWA high volume horizontal airflow is used for superiortemperature uniformity. Sterilizers are only shipped afterthe airflow tolerances have been finely tuned and checkedby a multi-point uniformity test that samples a minimumof 12 points within the chamber. Gruenberg uses a distinctperforated side wall that allows fine tuning of the airflow.
FILTRATIONTo keep the process chamber at class 100 quality, HEPAfilters are installed on the air intake, the exhaust and inthe recirculation wall.
The HEPA filters are a minimum 99.97% efficient at
Hot Air Sterilizers/Depyrogenation Ovens
0.3 microns. The intake HEPA filter prevents contami-nates from entering the sterilizer during operation. Theexhaust HEPA filter ensures that contamination willnot be drawn into the sterilizer as the cycle ends.
Side wall filters provide distinct advantages. Filtrationtakes place just before the air enters the sterilizationchamber so that class 100 conditions are ensured. Plus, they afford easy access to filters for validation andmaintenance.
ADDITIONAL FEATURESMost sterilizers are designed for pass-through opera-tion and are installed between sterile and non-sterileclassified areas. An automatic door interlock systemprevents unloading until the sterilizing and coolingcycles have been completed. Forced cooling helpsshorten the cool-down period.
The door and loading tracks are elevated so that aproper seal can be made at the bottom of the door.Wiper gaskets are not recommended because they cansweep particles into the sterilizer.
Each sterilizer is designed for easy use and mainte-nance. Side walls and loading tracksare easily removable forcleaning. The entire doorseals against a continuous, silicone P-gasket.
216 ft3 custom, flush frontsterilizer featuring a fully-automatic, pneumatically-powereddoor interlock mechanism that incorporatesa hidden latch system.

Shown here is the non-sterileside of a typical truck-insterilizer. Two removable trucktracks on the processchamber floor allow easycleaning. Between the twotruck tracks are steel pegs. The steel pegs lock thetransfer cart and sterilizertogether while loading thetruck into the processchamber.

Controls
Gruenberg offers a broad selection of controls andcontrol systems. A typical control panel is shown onthis page. Additional controls are described in theoption section on page 12. The control panels can bemounted on the sterilizer or in a remote console.
Magnehelic or Photohelic Gauges- Pressure differentialindication is provided from our four locations: circulationfilters, chamber, intake filter, and exhaust filter.
Chart Recorder- Solid state electronic single-pen recorderis available with either 24-hour or 7-day recording and hasa 10" diameter circular chart and inkless pen. The recordersystem comes with a thermocouple temperature sensoraccurate to within .5% of range scale.
Programmable Temperature Controller: Multi-Segment-The programmable temperature controller with digital set, digital readout, and thermocouple sensor can function asa normal process control or execute any of eight setpointprofiles. Each profile can have six ramp and six soaksegments. Any number of profiles can be linked together.Accuracy: ±0.25 of scale range.
High-Limit Thermostat- The high limit thermostat has auser-defined preset limit. If the process temperaturereaches that preset limit, the high-limit thermostat will de-energize the heating system. To reactivate heating, thehigh-limit thermostat must be reset manually.
Main Power Disconnect Switch- For safe electricalmaintenance of the unit, a main power disconnect switch isinstalled on the access door of the control box. Thisnecessitates the power to be disconnected before allowingthe panel to be opened. Disconnects can be fused or non-fused and a circuit breaker may be specified, too.
Power Switch- Turns the power on or off.
Heat Switch- Turns heating elements on or off.
Alarm Silence- Turns off the alarm when alarm is activated.
Audible Alarm- Signifies a system malfunction.
Indication Lights- Provide information on the status of theprocess or if a problem should occur. Many configurationsare available.
Ammeters- Three ammeters, one for each phase, areprovided so that the heater banks can be easily monitored. If even a single heater should burn out, the loss will beindicated on the appropriate ammeter.

*Note: The exterior dimensions listed above represent the cabinet width of each unit. Typically, add 24" to the cabinet width for the control cabinet, 14-36" to thecabinet height for the top mounted equipment, and 10-12" to the cabinet depth for the doors and door hardware.
DryersGruenberg manufactures granulation dryers from 15 to800 cubic feet of chamber capacity. Steam units arerated up to 90°C, and electric units are available up to260°C. Two types of circulation systems are standard:controlled recirculation and single-pass systems.
CONSTRUCTIONGranulation dryers, just like the sterilizers, are builtaround a welded structural steel frame for long-termreliability.
All interior surfaces are constructed of 100%continuously welded stainless steel for quick and easywashdowns. To simplify cleaning, both side walls areremovable, and as an option, the floor may be sloped toa drain. Radius corners are optional.
The exteriors can be either painted cold-rolled steelor stainless steel depending upon your needs. Betweenthe interior and exterior walls are over 3" of high-performance insulation.
AIRFLOWDistinct perforated walls provide for a superiortemperature uniformity of ±2°C. Every dryer is fullytested for airflow and temperature uniformity by amulti-point strip recorder prior to shipping.
CONTROLLED RECIRCULATIONControlled recirculation is the most common means ofhandling airflow in a granulation dryer. Heated air ispassed over the product; before some of the air isexhausted, much of it is recirculated, reducing energyconsumption. Temperature uniformity for controlledrecirculation is more stable than in single-pass systems.
SINGLE-PASS SYSTEMSingle-pass systems heat the air, filter it, pass it acrossthe load, then totally exhaust it. This system wasdeveloped for use with high alcohol or flammableliquid mixes.
HEPA FILTRATIONHEPA filters, 99.97% efficient, at 0.3 microns, areinstalled on the fresh air intake and the exhaust. TheHEPA filters have a stainless steel frame and vary inthickness depending on airflow. A disposable pre-filteris installed upstream of the intake HEPA filter toremove larger particles and to extend the life of theHEPA filter. As the dryer cycles off, the exhaust HEPAfilter prevents particles from entering back into theprocess chamber.
CONTROLSControls for granulation dryers are very similar tocontrols for the sterilizers pictured on page 3. Addi-tional controls are shown on page 12. Control panelscan be mounted on the side of the granulation dryeror placed in remote locations. Control panels aredesigned around their installation classification.
ADDITIONAL FEATURESTypically, two magnehelic gauges are suppliedto monitor the intake and exhaust HEPAfilters. Photohelic gauges can replace themagnehelic gauges as an option. Photohelicgauges will sound an alarm if the HEPA filtersare loaded beyond a preset pressure drop.
Door switches are standard on granulationdryers to prevent the oven from operatingwhen the door is opened.
An electrical disconnect on the controlpanel protects maintenance personnel by de-energizing the power when the electricalaccess door is open.

Explosion ResistantGranulation Dryers
Design requirements set by OSHA andNFPA 86A (Class A) must be added toany dryer processing alcohol, solventmixes, or other volatile atmosphereswithin the dryer. Class A dryers requirea specific exhaust rate to dilute vaporsand an increased KW rating to compen-sate for the increased exhaust. Explo-sion venting relief panels or pressure-relief door latches are necessary, alongwith monitoring pressure switches thatwould shut off the heating system if theexhaust rate were to drop belowacceptable limits.
Dryers operating in atmospheres thatare Class I, Group D, require explosionresistant housings for all electrical; static-eliminating belt drives; explosion resistantmotors, non-sparking hardware, purgedcontrol consoles, airflow switches andassociated high limits and shut-offs.
