Stanford researcher Caryl Dweck coined terms “Growth Mindset” and “Fixed Mindset.”

After decades of research Dr. Dweck found that people with a Fixed Mindset believe in intelligence and talents to be “fixed.”

They believe that talent and intelligence alone will mostly contribute to someone’s success.

They are wrong.

People with a “Growth Mindset” (GM) believe that success is more dependent on dedication, resilience, and effort.

These people are right. GM must be taught in schools, believed in by teachers and other staff to instill the same viewpoint in students.

Growth Mindset: Persistence

Sometimes we face a difficult task.

Sometimes we face more than one difficult task at one time.

We have two choices: PERSIST or GIVE UP.

Persisting is difficult, but it has its rewards. One of the rewards is that we have a bigger chance at successfully completing the task.

Giving up is easy. However, it has its consequences. One of the consequences is that we won’t be successful at completing the task (s).

The other, even bigger reward, is that we practice PERSISTING

The practice of PERSISTING makes it easier to PERSIST next time.

Think of a challenge that you had to face recently. This could be an school assignment or another task you had to tackle.

Look at the PERSISTENCE CONTINUUM below. Draw your own PERSISTENCE CONTINUUM. Place yourself on the PERSISTENCE CURRICULUM at the time of this challenge. Be honest. Share about your experience and say where you would like to be on the PERSISTENCE

CONTINUUM next time.
