approximately 3 times of the birth weight in one year.

Average growth is 1/2 inch each month 8-10 inches

While all babies may grow at a different rate, the following indicates the average for babies from 10 to 12 months of age.

Babies are rapidly developing their physical abilities at this age. They

become mobile for the first time and safety in the home becomes an

important issue. While babies may progress at different rates, the following

are some of the common milestones your baby may reach in this age group:

Activities

• Pulls up himself/herself to standing position and can sit back down too

• Walks with the support of furniture or by holding your finger.

• May stand without the support.

• May begin to take steps on own

• Able to sleep up to 12 hours at night without a feeding apart from 2 small naps during the day.

•Plays with the ball

• Able to pick up food and small objects with fingers

• Can eat finger food on its own.

• Drinks from sippy cups

• Waves bye-bye

• Can turn pages in a book, often several at a time.

• Bangs toys and other stuff together

• Imitates scribble

• New teeth continue to erupt; may have four to six teeth by one year old.

Speech

• Says da-da and ma-ma and recognizes them.

• Imitates sounds and some speech

• May say things like "Uh oh"

• Imitates animal sounds in response to questions (such as, "What does monkey do?

• Shakes hands.

Understanding

• Recognises familiar objects and pictures • Can point to the things and pictures when

asked, “Where is the..?" • Follows a one step command with the

parent having to show the child how to do it

• Have preferences for people as well as toys.

• Explorer in true sense. Very curious wants to explore everything.

• Dances with limited movements to music • Favourite game is to drop things for

others to pick up • Points and gestures for objects and

actions • pretends simple actions, such as cleaning

or drinking from cup • separation anxiety may be present; may

cling and clutch parents; cries when parent leaves

Dr. Peddi’s tips for your baby's

development and emotional security

• Hold and cuddle your baby often

• Leave him or her alone in safe area and come back after a short period to built confidence that you will come back every time. Make sure to keep an eye from distance.

• Keep introducing your baby to new people and things.

• Look at picture books with your baby and talk about the pictures to enhance speech and understanding.

• Let baby eat small finger food by himself or herself. Do not worry about the mess he or she going to create.

• Read stories to your baby every day.

• Let baby play with moving toys.
