TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE RESPECTFUL YOU HAVE TO: Be polite, courteous and use good manners. RESPECT is also shown by following the Golden Rule, considering the feelings of others, and by dealing peacefully with disagreements. By accepting others, even if they look, act, or believe differently, you are showing RESPECT. Be proud to live in America where respect always counts!
Austus (derived from the Estonian for “respect”) is the LION who is confident that respect is one of the highest qualities one can have — for na-ture, for others and for oneself.
Treating people with respect makes your world a nicer place to live in, whether it’s home, school, or in your community. And it’s easy – all you have to do is treat people the way you like to have them treat you. Don’t insult people or make fun of them. Listen to others when they speak. Value other people’s opinions. Be considerate of peoples’ likesand dislikes.
Newspaper ACTIVITIES1. Cut out the letters R-E-S-P-E-C-T from the
newspaper. Arrange them vertically (up and down) on a piece of paper. Beside each letter write the name of a person that you respect or the name of a person that shows respect to others.
2. Think of someone you know that is respectful of others. Search through today’s paper to find the letters of his or her name. Cut out and paste the letters of their name on a piece of paper.
Trade papers with someone and tell them about the name on your paper.
Martin Luther King Jr. taught many important lessons about respect. He taught that people should respect each other even though they are different. He believed in treating others as we would like to be treated and that service to others was key to showing respect to all.
In 1994, the US Congress started the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Thousands of service projects will take place this year across the country with a record number of Americans volunteering their time to help others in their community. Visit WWW.MLKDAY.GOV to learn more.
Next Monday, January 16th, the nation will once again honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Many of you will have the day OFF of school. How can you make it a day ON for your community?
Mr. Matt Osmun’s 2nd grade class at New Oxford Elementary School has been working on a
government unit. They discussed the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They also discussed
how the U.S. was formed, and the way people had to come together to defend their freedom.
They chose an ideal that shapes our government and gave a speech about that ideal and how
it affects their life. Through this activity, the students learned to respect all people and their
views. Members of the class are shown with the posters they made to show respect for their
country by honoring veterans, telling them “I am proud to be an
American because….”.

The Reading CornerClifford’s Manners by Norman Bridwell
Read all about how Clifford practices good manners. “Everyone loves Clifford’s manners. That’s why everyone loves Clifford.”
If someone wrote a book about YOUR manners what would they say? Do you show respect by remembering to use good manners?
