We are on a mission to educate global business leaders, and to advance knowledge in the theory and practice of management globally. Anchored by the four cornerstones of NBS’s curriculum—Learn, Grow, Lead and Serve—our programmes are designed to support NBS students in building skills, knowledge and experiences that tie back to the business world not just locally but globally.

NBS is a world-renowned institution, and our graduates are in high demand by corporations worldwide. Since 2009, NBS has been ranked among the world’s top 40 business schools. The internationally diverse faculty has remarkable experience educating accountancy and business graduates. Continued collaboration between faculty and industry keeps our curriculum relevant. Our educators are top academics and committed in their areas of expertise. They are widely sought after as consultants by government agencies and listed companies. At NBS, we recognise that global experiences are essentials for success. We partner with external agencies and big industry players on big-impact projects that offer students out-of-classroom learning experiences. For example, the Cyber Risk Management (CyRiM) Project was launched as a collaboration with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and financial institutions to facilitate research on cyber risk, security and insurance.

Being a global leader also means taking responsibility for the social, economic and environmental well-being of the community. Sustainability is key. Our courses cover ethics, leadership, communication skills and environmental responsibility, preparing students to build a sustainable business community.

We are part of NTU’s overall drive towards global excellence ineducation and research. Through our cultural intelligence courses, our students are well-prepared for cross-border student mobility programmes including student exchange, internships and internationally recognised competitions that simulate real-world business scenarios which strengthen their adaptability, creativity and intelligence in diverse and vibrant environments. Support and opportunities are limitless for students to develop, refine and reach their full potential at NBS.

Unique and Challenging World-class ProgrammesNBS provides a series of unique and challenging programmes led by topflight faculty. The school believes in honing students’ analytical and practical capabilities through experiential learning initiatives, in a diverse international environment.

1. Bachelor of Accountancy/Business and Master of Science (Financial Engineering)NBS offers a four-year Bachelor’s-Master’s programme thatcombines the Bachelor’s degree in either accountancy or business, and the Master of Science (Financial Engineering). Under the programme, students undergo overseas study exposure at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, USA, where they are awarded a Certificate in Computational Finance upon successful course completion.

2. Double Degree in Accountancy & BusinessThis double degree programme, highly sought after by top students in Singapore, is designed to leverage the synergy between Accountancy and Business to provide students a balanced combination of business management know-how and accounting professional skills. Graduates receive two degrees at the end of the programme, which takes between three and half, and four years to complete.

3. Double Degree in Business (with Specialisationin Business Analytics) & Computer Engineering/Computer Science These four-year programmes will build business management skills and help students excel at data analytics, software application or computer engineering development. This gives graduates the edge in the technology-driven business environment. Both programmes are offered jointly by NBS and the School of Computer Science and Engineering, NTU.

4. Bachelor in AccountancyThis programme creates discovery-based learning environments through seminar-style teaching to facilitate students’ active learning, with professors serving as facilitators and mentors. This approach, with its focus on critical thinking and problem-solving, equips students with analytical skills to handle unstructured, complex and strategic challenges in business. This radically new way of teaching accounting is the result of Project Discovery (PD), a partnership with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which runs US’ top accounting programme.

5. Bachelor of Accountancy with Second Specialisation in Predictive & Forensic AnalyticsThe courses in the second specialisation complement the accountancy education that students receive in their Bachelor of Accountancy programme. Accountancy graduates trained in Predictive & Forensic Analytics will be able to help their organisations interpret data, maintain compliance and effectively shape/re-shape their organisations’ strategic direction.

6. Bachelor of Accountancy/Business with Minorin Strategic CommunicationCommunication strategy is crucial to business success. The Minor in Strategic Communication offers a wide range of courses that complement business education, especially for the marketing specialisation. This includes courses in public relations, advertising and media planning. Students receive conceptual and practical training through communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders. They also learn to implement communication strategy across various media platforms.

7. Bachelor of BusinessGuided by a pragmatic, real-world focus, the programme offers six cutting-edge and industry-relevant specialisations that are continuously updated through interactions and consultation with leading professional bodies such as the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute, the UK Institute of Actuaries, the Singapore Tourism Board, and the Singapore Computer Society. Team-based projects, presentations, simulations, and integrative case studies ensure that you will be ready to meet the demands of today’s complex and dynamic business world.

Specialisation starts from second year of the programme, ensuring that students possess valued substantive expertise that gives them an edge when they begin their careers.

Highlights of the Business specialisations (choose one from six):

7-1. Actuarial ScienceThe course is accredited by the Institute of Actuaries (UK), the only programme in Singapore to be accredited by one of the profession’s most respected bodies. On successful completion of this specialisation, students can qualify for up to eight exemptions for the Institute’s Core Technical Subjects examinations, which go towards their professional requirement to qualify as an actuary.

7-2. Banking & FinanceThe programme is recognised as a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) programme partner, which will give students a head start in their preparation for a CFA qualification.

There are three tracks – Main track, Banking & Finance Platform-Based Learning (B&F PBL) and Banking & Finance International Trading Programme (B&F ITP).

B&F PBL and B&F ITP are new tracks:

B&F PBLThe main goal of this track is to train graduates to be desk-ready in high-value added sectors in financial services such as asset and wealth management, and capital markets. It aims to equip graduates with the right combination of knowledge and skills to perform tasks on the platforms consistent with those used in the industry.

B&F ITPSingapore is the largest physical commodities trading hub in Asia and home to more than 400 global trading companies that have anchored their strategic global or regional functions here. With a bustling ecosystem of offshore traders and supporting industries, it is estimated that Singapore will need to grow the talent pool for the trading sector by approximately 500 per year to ensure a healthy pipeline of talent to fuel and sustain the continued growth of the sector. The International Trading Programme prepares students for lucrative careers in commodity trading.

7-3. Business AnalyticsThis course is the first to be offered by a Singapore business school– with the first graduates expected in 2017. It admits 60 students each year. Big data and analytics has been identified by the Economic Development Board as an important growth sector for Singapore. By the end of 2017, data analytics is expected to contribute $1 billion to the economy, powered by 2,500 data analytics professionals.

The course focuses largely on business insights with particular application in business operations, digital marketing, as well as finance and accounting. It also provides instruction on data modelling and data management.

The programme opens up client-facing career opportunities in management and technology consulting, consumer analytics and marketing, supply chain management, risk management, and business forecasting in a diversity of industries including finance, hospitality, healthcare and retail.

7-4. Human Resource ConsultingA first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, the human resource consulting specialisation equips students with key competencies to effectively manage human capital. The curriculum adopts internationally recognised and certified HR tools to give students a solid grounding in human resource practices. Students also develop interpersonal skills for networking and managing in a culturally diverse work environment.

7-5. MarketingThis course prepares students for an exciting career in a variety of marketing functions that may include brand and product management, key account management, trade marketing, advertising, and marketing research. It gives them a strong grounding in market analysis, planning and decision-making techniques, as well as consumer and business behaviour theories relevant to modern marketing practice. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on experiential pedagogical methods, and students can expect to learn through business cases, computerised simulations, field trips, consumer experiments, online tools and various team projects.

7-6. Risk Management and Insurance Programme Today’s society faces major challenges such as global warming, ageing, catastrophic risks and emerging threats such as cyber-attacks. They have been increasing in magnitude and complexity. To properly execute their job functions, risk managers and insurers need to develop innovative solutions and tools. They need to enhance corporate and personal risk management.

In the programme, several insurance courses are intended to cover topics that correspond to the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) units. Successful completion of those courses prepares students for corresponding CII examinations.

While the NBS campus and hall facilities offer a conducive learning environment, our professors further enhance the NBS learning experience by creating a secure space for students to grow socially, psychologically, and culturally. We learn that working in silos is counter-productive while teamwork allows us to grow. Internships teach us to look beyond your job scope and hone transferable skills instead. I joined the NTU Toastmasters Club and developed better communication skills and leadership qualities.

The rigorous curriculum in NBS offers a myriad of modules, promoting multidisciplinary learning. Students get to experience plenty of project work and presentations where collaboration and communication are of paramount importance. NBS has also adopted the flipped classroom method which encourages self-learning and class time for exploring topics in greater depth. As a result, students are groomed into critical thinkers and effective communicators, both of which are traits highly sought-after in the working world.

Zhang YingPresidentNBS Auditing and Assurance TeamYear 3, Bachelor of Accountancy

The NBS programme allowed me to network with various external organisations on a professional level and gain a better understanding of the corporate world. My involvement in these networking sessions ignited my passion for audit and motivated me to explore more about audit beyond the classroom. I enjoyed being able to participate in competitions, like the Singapore Business Case Competition, and exchange my ideas with other like-minded individuals.

7th Annual NBS Career DayThe 2016 Annual NBS Career Day was the biggest one in NBS history. There were 1,400 attendees and close to 50 choice employers offering more than 1,000 internships and job opportunities.

In her speech, Guest of Honour, Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Trade and Industry and Mayor, South West CDC, highlighted the importance of combining academic results, classroom knowledge and experiential learning to nurture the next generation of skills-ready professionals.

This year, pre-university students were invited to an exclusive opportunity to participate in DiscoverU – a platform for students to meet with industry experts.

With premier employer partners from a variety of industries including fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs), banking, finance, healthcare, hospitality, management consulting, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, real-estate, retail, technology, telecommunications, tourism and more, NBS students were presented with many opportunities for a promising start to their careers.

One Step Ahead with NBS Career ServicesNBS’ team of career managers is dedicated to the development of students’ career paths. NBS supports students to define career goals and map out paths to achieve them.

Through courses, workshops and seminars, NBS Career Services help work out the careers that best fit students’ skills, interests and values. Graduates are equipped with knowledge to help nail that dream job interview.

7 in 10 NTU Graduates Secured Jobs Before Graduation: SurveySeven in 10 students from NTU’s graduating class of 2016 secured jobs before graduation, according to a preliminary survey of more than 5,000 graduates conducted by the university in June.

Global Opportunities, Broadening HorizonsEducation should not be constrained by geography. NBS’ exchange partnerships with esteemed universities around the world such as Tsinghua University in China, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in the U.S., York University in Canada, University of Mannheim in Germany, University of Edinburgh in United Kingdom, ESSEC Business School in France, University of St Gallen in Switzerland, and the University of New South Wales in Australia, offer opportunities for semester-long overseas immersions that broaden global network and perspectives.

Overseas Entrepreneurship Programme (OEP)The Overseas Entrepreneurship Programme (OEP) offers entrepreneurially inclined students a one-year internship experience in some of the most vibrant start-up ecosystems around the world. Mentored by founders, students will experience the travails of starting up a business while picking up invaluable life skills in leadership, adaptability and cultural understanding. Depending on the location, students can also take up courses at partner universities.

To experience the start-up scene in the bustling city of London is a dream come true. I am inspired

by the many aspiring entrepreneurs who work their ideas to traction and the sheer determination of many who are part of a thriving start-up ecosystem. It is also a fun challenge to be relocated in an entirely new environment, which makes the “overseas” element of the programme all the more valuable.

My work in building up a finance reporting system from scratch for a London start-up, has been very fulfilling. Through networking sessions, we are able to exchange ideas with aspiring entrepreneurs. Joining OEP has been one of the best decisions made in University andI have seen much growth since coming on-board.

GEM Explorer is a student exchange programme that offers undergraduates the perfect opportunity for cross-cultural exchange. Not only did I get to know the local students, I also had a chance to engage with fellow exchange students from all over the world. The mix of cultures definitely broadened my knowledge of the different cultures across the globe. It certainly presented itself as a great opportunity to expand my network globally.

Zhang Xiao YuPresidentNBS Exchange ClubYear 2, Bachelor of Accountancy

NBS Exchange Club has given me precious opportunities to interact with exchange students through various events and activities that we planned for them. Not only have we created a platform for the exchange students to learn more about Singapore culture and bond with other exchange students from all over the world, our committee has also developed a deeper understanding of their culture. This experience has really brought so much meaning to my university life in NBS.

Testimonials of NBS Students’ Overseas Work OpportunitiesDespite the competitive job market, NBS graduates have been placed in premier companies for both internships and permanent roles locally and abroad. NBS Career Services offers a plethora of courses, workshops and seminars such as mentoring programmes (industry, corporate and alumni mentoring), CareerFIT and Learn-Over-Lunch (LOL) to ensure graduates are real world ready.

We were primarily based in the Finance Department, while also gaining exposure to other functions

of the business. On some days, we conducted market visits all over Ethiopia to understand how company strategies were aligned with consumer preferences. On other days, we provided recommendations for improvements to business operations and processes.

The learning curve was steep but priceless! Both of us have gained a fair understanding of running a huge corporation with large global footprint, while witnessing the agility and responsiveness required of a business that serves the needs of local consumers.

Student clubs offer a new area of growth. They open doors for pursuing a passion or exploring an area of interest. I have learned the power of critical thinking through my experience in Accountancy and Business Club. Being in a club helps facilitate hands-on learning. Furthermore, holding a leadership position in a club allows you to put to test your leadership knowledge in a simulated professional setting which makes a great stepping stone into the real world.

A Slice of Sichuan LifeThe NBS Sichuan Teaching Project is an annual service-learning collaboration with Shuangdong-Nanyang Primary School in Deyang, Sichuan Province in China. The project was founded since NBS first received financial donations from the EMBA China alumni to rebuild the school in the aftermath of 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.

This year, 22 NBS students worked hard towards the goal of a three-week teaching trip in June. They not only worked towards betterment in society, but also forged closer friendships with teammates, while making fond memories with the children.

TOGETHER WE CANMAKE A DIFFERENCE

Empowering Women in IndiaAndrew Yin, Double Degree in Accountancy and Business, Class of 2016, took a year off from his studies to do humanitarian work in India in 2014. In recognition of his remarkable contribution to the community, he was presented with the Nanyang Award (Humanitarian Work) in 2014. During his internship at World Toilet Organisation, he was most affected that three out of 10 girls drop out of school upon puberty because of their menstruation. Andrew took a leap of faith to help these women. His idea was simple: invent a sanitary pad which is affordable and effective. His bigger plan was to make use of an aquatic weed indigenous to rural India, water hyacinth, to create the product.

He collaborated with an organisation in India to set his idea in motion in March 2014. Through their unique idea, women are now employed to make and sell these sanitary pads to their own community, serving as an additional source of household income. Today, approximately 100 women are employed, potentially reaching out to 300,000 other women. Girls are now using sanitary pads so they could continue attending classes during their menstrual periods.

Andrew’s team clinched the Top 10 social enterprises at the prestigious 5 Minutes To Change The World competition organised by United Nations Women. He continues to raise funds for his cause worldwide.

Touching Hearts and Changing Lives for a Better TomorrowCorporate social responsibility and sustainability are more than just green practices. They positively impact employees and the communities in which we operate. NBS recognises the importance of giving back to society. Students can apply their academic knowledge and skills to real world challenges while bringing positive changes to the society.

Georgina NgPresidentTourism and Hospitality Management ClubYear 2, Bachelor of Business(Tourism and Hospitality Management)

Life in NBS has been challenging because the transition from a polytechnic to a university was unexpectedly huge. I found it very difficult to cope initially, as the rigours of a university education proved to be daunting. Thankfully, I became acquainted with many friends, who extended a helping hand to help me in my studies. Through my life in NBS, I learnt that failure is not final, if we pick ourselves up and try again.

Heng Yi WenPresidentQuantitative Finance and Actuarial Science ClubYear 3, Bachelor of Business (Actuarial Science)

I joined the Henderson Inter-Faith Goodwill Store Project which is founded by an NBS alumnus and supported by NBS Undergraduate Programme Office. The Project involves a monthly food ration distribution to the low- income families residing in the rental flats at the Henderson district. Through this Project, I am able to ease the financial strain of these families. I also have the opportunity to interact with these under-privileged residents, understanding their needs and struggles.
