Grove Communication: Internship

Going into this internship, I had 6 main goals.

1) How to work closely with the press.

2) Learn the ins and outs of Public Relations.

3) How to become a more effective communicator.

4) Becoming a better writer through professional work.

5) Learning how to deal with clients and help them with what they want.

6) How the professional world works and how to successfully succeed.

With the work that I did while interning

during July & August of 2014, I was

able to achieve most of these goals. I

never got the chance to work directly

with the press to try and get coverage

for clients. I worked with different

parts off the magazines and dealt with

them and the clients’ products. I

learned that there is a lot of work that

goes into public relations and trying to

have clients’ featured. I was in contact

most of the time over the phone and

through e-mail. I worked with

PowerPoint to manage the coverage

reports. I didn’t do any writing for

Grove Communication, sadly. I did

mostly administrative duties. Never

dealing directly with clients wasn’t what

I had in mind when I learned about the

internship. I would have loved to learn

how to directly deal with clients and to

learn what went on between the clients

and the two main employees at Grove

Communication. Since this was my first

experience with an internship, I was

able to see how the professional world

works and what it takes to flourish in

this industry.

My roles while at Grove Communication were: Stocking inventory, organizing and sorting through returns, chasing back returns, preparing send outs, delivering close by send outs, scanning all print coverage, monthly reports –updated weekly, keeping product samples organized and counted for, and finding and picturing content for social media.

These daily tasks that I completed

helped me better understand the world

of Public Relations and what I could do

to make these tasks more efficient and

Monthly Client Coverage ReportsAs coverage was printed or put online, I had to input the image of the

coverage, the name of the company/blog that produced the coverage,

and what type of coverage the product was in (magazine, social media

or blog). There was a report for each client, so 5 total that I had to

manage. The reports were done through PowerPoint and they were

updated weekly or as coverage came out so it would be easier to do at

the end of the month. I had to make sure that all of the reports were

pleasing to the eye and fix any problems that occurred on them. Once

the reports were complete, they were sent to the clients for review.

Grove Communication had 5 clients during the course of my internship:

BOUTON, Buckley London, Victoria Tryon, Susan Caplan, Shore Projects

Watches and Anne Klein Watches.

+My London Experience

Having an internship

in a foreign country

was such a great way

for me to see how

businesses across the

world conduct

themselves on a day-

to-day basis. I

enjoyed learning how

public relations is

dealt with in a small

boutique firm with

only few clientele.

My internship in

London has given me

the tools that I need to

succeed in the world

of Public Relations. It

has helped me get my

foot in the door of the

industry and I am

confident that I will be

able to thrive in the

fast-paced world of

Public Relations and

Social Media Coverage Grove Communication Social Media

Facebook

Grove Communication actively

uses their Facebook account.

However, it is the social media

account that they use the least.

They use it to post links to articles

they think that people would like

to read about the jewelry and

fashion world. They also post

links to their clients’ websites so

that people have easy access to

the content. I focused on the

article finding. I had to find the

articles that I thought were

interesting and compile them into

an email and then send it to the

freelance social media employee

who would then pick and choose

what she wanted to post to the

+

Twitter

Grove Communication uses their

Twitter profile the most out of

their social media accounts.

Sometimes the tweets consist of

the same links that their

Facebook has but most of the

time they are referring to

something they did in the office

that day or they’re tweeting at

people that work at magazines.

They have tweets that mention

their clients’ & tag them so that

their followers can easily access

the twitter pages. My tasks with

the tweets were the same as with

Facebook. I wrote the tweets out

and emailed them to the

freelance employee who posted

Instagram

Grove Communication uses their

Instagram account about as much

as they tweet. The pictures that

are posted are mostly of the

products that they have in the

showroom. They always tag the

client. They do have some

pictures of the London scenery

every once in a while. I was able

to stage the pictures that I took

for Instagram while there. I was

even able to take some jewelry

with me when I took weekend

trips to Scotland and Paris so that

I could take pictures with them.

After I took the pictures, I emailed

them to the freelance employee

who posted them on Instagram.

Internship

With this being my first internship, I didn’t know what to expect,

especially since it was in a foreign country. However, it proved to be

a summer of great value for me personally and professionally. I was

able to accomplish many of the things that I wanted to do. It was an

impeccable learning experience for me and there wasn’t much that I

would have changed about my internship experience.

Co-workers

I had three co-workers at Grove Communication. There were two

main employees, Marie and Eilidh and one other intern, Rebecca.

Working with only three people was a nice change of pace since I

have always worked with many people. They helped me with things

that I didn’t understand and I was able to ask them questions when I

needed to and they were very helpful and wonderful people.

Responsibilities

The things that I did while at Grove Communication for six weeks were

rewarding. I was able to get my foot into the door and I enjoyed what

I did. My favorite responsibility was taking and staging the pictures

that they used for their social media accounts. I talked with people on

the phone at magazines and newspapers a good amount of the time

to find out general information that I wasn’t able to find online.

What I couldn’t do

One of the main things that I wish I had been able to do was to deal

directly with the press. I was more of a chaser of things that hadn’t

been returned and the other intern was able to deal with the press

more than I was. Being in the field of Public Relations, you have to be

able to know how to deal with people that you want to publicize your

clients’. Sadly, I wasn’t able to experience this while at Grove

Communication.
