"It is a relic, this railway, a bit of ornamental
scrollwork lifted from the pattern of

We'd love you to come and travel on our historic, steam-operated railway whereyou can enjoy meeting the friendly staff and volunteers. The Talyllyn Railway today reflects its historical past, a rural byway where the pace oflife is gentle, the maximum speed of the train is fifteen miles per hour, and passengers canhave an unhurried journey along the beautiful and unchanging Fathew Valley to the remoteterminus at Nant Gwernol.Built in 1865, on a gauge of 2 feet 3 inches, to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarriesnear Abergynolwyn to Tywyn, and ultimately world-wide. The lineruns seven and a quarter miles fromTywyn to Nant Gwernol, from whereinclines and horse-drawn tramwayscontinued into the mountains. Slatetraffic ceased in 1946 following a seriousrock fall in the quarry. In 1950 the line's owner Sir HenryHaydn Jones died, and the future for theTalyllyn Railway looked very bleak - slatetraffic had ceased in 1946. However, agroup of enthusiasts, led by the engineerand author L.T.C. Rolt, sought to preventthe railway's closure and scrapping and, thanks to the generosity of Lady HaydnJones, the Talyllyn Railway PreservationSociety (the first such organisation in the world) was allowedto take over the running of the line. By then the railway wasin a very sorry state with only one operable locomotive, invery poor condition, struggling to pull the trains along anovergrown and perilous track.Since 1951 great improvements have been made; volunteermembers of the TRPS now providemost of the train crew and station staffrequired to operate the line, and assistwith maintenance work and manyother activities. The track has beenre-laid, locomotives have been rebuiltand acquired, new carriages have beenconstructed, a safe and flexiblesignalling system has been installed, themany other improvements have beencarried out. Both of the originallocomotives and all the originalcarriages remain in regular use to thisday.
The Talyllyn Railway has carried passengers for more than 150 years and hasbeen meeting the needs of coach parties and group travel organisers since its early days.We are pleased to welcome schoolchildren, pensioners, steam enthusiasts, photographersand any other special interest group, or simply groups of friends and relations who wantto enjoy each others company in special surroundings.Sample Trips:Round trip: Tywyn Wharf - Nant Gwernol - Tywyn Wharf.
