Grouping the sleep mode MS

• Legacy sleep mode deals– Power saving class– Sleep mode MSs individually

• Listening to TRF_IND is overhead due to unnecessary of listening period

• Grouping the sleep mode MS– With same/similar traffic pattern (sleep/listening interval)– BS tells the group

• if the MS(s) in group should be listen or sleep with bitmap in each super-frame control signal

– MS in the listening period • checks the bitmap whether it should wake or not the predefined frame in the Super-

frame

Sleep Mode Operation

• [Step 1] MS is ready to go to sleep mode

• [Step 2] MS is in sleep mode– Listens the control signal of super-frame to synchronize &

check if there is traffic from/to the MS– Sleeps again after sending/receiving traffic– Sleep info. should be changed

• [Step 3] MS is returning to active mode

Page 5: Group Sleep Mode in IEEE 802.16m IEEE 802.16 Presentation Submission Template (Rev. 9) Document Number: IEEE C802.16m-08/591r1 Date Submitted: 2008-07-07

Sleep Mode Operation (cont’d)

• [Step 1] MS is ready to go to sleep mode– RSP MSG from BS makes MS

enter the sleep mode with info.• Listening interval

– According to the traffic pattern• Group ID

– BS assigns it which can be shared by MSs

• Listening Frame in Super-frame– Pre-defined frame index in the

super-frame– Small used frame index first

[Example of Sleep mode opeartion]

Sleep Mode Operation (cont’d)

• [Step 2] MS is in sleep mode– Sleeps with the info

• Listening interval, Group ID, Listening frame

– [Step 2-1] Listens in listening period

• along with the listening interval• Listens bitmap in super-frame

control signal– If the bitmap is set, MS listens

in the listening frame– If the bitmap is not, MS sleeps

continuously until next listening time

[Example of Sleep mode opeartion]

Sleep Mode Operation (cont’d)

• [Step 2] MS is in sleep mode– [Step 2-2] Backs to sleep

immediately after listening • the same sleep mode info.

– [Step 2-3] Sleep mode info. needs to be changed

• BS can notify with MOB_SLP-RSP with changed sleep mode info

– listening interval, group id, & listening frame

• MS can request with MOB_SLP-REQ with expected sleep mode info.

[Example of Sleep mode opeartion]

[Step 2-2]

Sleep Mode Operation (cont’d)

• [Step 3] MS is returning to active mode– MS have some traffic to transmit– BS wake the MS in sleep mode up due to

• Buffer delay• New traffic is coming to the MS

Example of Bitmap of Group sleeping mode

• Group ID := 1• Predefined Listening Frame := F2

Summary

• Group sleep mode instead of individual sleep mode– Same/similar traffic pattern– Bitmap in the super-frame control signal instead of

TRF_IND– Group ID & pre-defined frame in the super-frame

Page 12: Group Sleep Mode in IEEE 802.16m IEEE 802.16 Presentation Submission Template (Rev. 9) Document Number: IEEE C802.16m-08/591r1 Date Submitted: 2008-07-07

Proposed Text

• X.x Sleep mode operationX.x.x Group Sleep mode BS manages MS in sleep mode with grouping

according to the same/similar traffic pattern. BS transmits sleep information such as Group ID, frame number in the super-frame, and listening interval. BS indicates MS to wake up or sleep contiguously with bitmap which corresponds with sleep group ID.
