About the Disease

• The disease came from Thailand when a man was infected with ophiocordyceps unilateralis (Zombie Fungus) through contact with a cat who was carrying the fungus

• Spread through bites or contact with bodily fluids• Very contagious, but there is no current vaccine or

treatment• Disease Development:– Within the first twelve hours one will feel flu-like

symptoms (i.e. fever, sweating, stomach ache, etc.)– At the end of twenty-four hours, the infected person goes

through the transformation from human to zombie

First Responders

• We are training: – Policemen (control)– Firefighters and E.M.S. (handing calls)– Doctors (working to develop cures/vaccine)– Waste Management (dealing with dead zombies by fire)

• We are currently training by giving small scale seminars at all of the hospitals and departments. The seminars have been created by the county health department and modeled after the Federal Response Plan.•Current Communication is normal. During an emergency, special internet would be used. •Everyone in the county is being trained, but the number of necessary people will be determined if an outbreak occurs.

• The goal is to keep the disease controlled• Step One: All planes coming from the Thailand area will be checked

according to the design below:

Zombie Apocalypse Plan

Page 7: Group IV: Zombie Apocalypse Response Team Group 8

• Step Two: Anyone infected will be isolated in the Manatee Memorial hospital for testing, research, and protection. Here we will be questioning them to find out who they have been in contact with and working to develop vaccines and cures.

Zombie Apocalypse Plan

• Step Three:Anyone infected will be isolated and disposed of by means of fire.

Zombie Apocalypse Plan• If the disease gets out of control we will follow these steps:• Step Four: We will ensure that all first responders have a cell phone and

computer that can receive the public service announcements that will be sent out every hour with updates on the outbreak.

• Step Five: The Walmarts on State Road 70, State Road 64, and Cortez Road will be designated as “safe houses” where food, clothing, and other necessary items will be evenly distributed to the citizens. In order to enter the Walmart they will have to go through the same screening process they did at the airport.

• Step Six: If the resources within our various Walmarts run out, we will contact the district to help deliver supplies from outside cities.

• Step Seven: Policemen will stationed inside and outside of the “safe houses” and hospitals to control the areas. They will also be training others on how to defend themselves against the zombies.

• Step Eight: If a zombie is found and killed, the waste management crew will be contacted through the internet and cell phones in order to take the zombies to the designated area to be burned.

Page 9: Group IV: Zombie Apocalypse Response Team Group 8

• If a complete evacuation is needed:• Step Nine: We will send out a public service announcement asking

everyone to gather at the closest “safe house” We will also send out an announcement on the radio to the a cruise line asking them to bring 3 boats to Anna Maria.

• Step Ten: Armed escorts will group everyone and escort them on buses to be sent to Anna Maria. Women and children will go first. They will also carry whatever supplies they can hold.

Zombie Apocalypse Plan

Page 10: Group IV: Zombie Apocalypse Response Team Group 8

• Step Ten: Once on the island, the escorts will safely put everyone onto the ship to be taken 15 miles out where they will anchor the ships and wait for the others to arrive.

• Step Eleven: Since zombies are attracted to noise, we will send out an announcement through the radio asking everyone to make as much noise as they can. The zombies will follow the noise and sink in the water.

• Step Twelve: Once it is presumably safe, the first responders will return and check the city. Once they have made sure the city is safe, they will send an announcement allowing everyone to return.

Zombie Apocalypse Plan

Testing

• We are currently working with our top researchers and the infected people at Manatee Memorial Hospital to run tests and do blood work to determine what the cure may be.

• We will also be running autopsies and examinations on the dead zombies to determine the changes that occur during the transformation.

Estimated Funding and Cost• If the disease was kept controlled at the first infected airport then the costs

would include:– Training: $2,000 per first responder– Airport gate closure: $200 million– Hospital rent: $346,000– Research: $500 million

• If the disease was to outbreak:– Cost of previous work– First responder calls: $1,800 per call– Ammunition: $0.50 per round– Safe Houses: $3 million per store– Buses: $1800– Cruise Ship: $55,000 per ship

• We will ask for funding from first the County Health Department and the MCAT for transportation. We will then ask for state funding and then Federal funding if needed.

Real Life Application

• Our original plan to contain the disease can be used as an outline to control other foreign diseases.

• The idea of using a hospital for isolation and research could also be applied when and if a new, dangerous disease was to be discovered.

• The Chain of Command could be used and adapted for any natural disaster.

• Collecting resources and funding are both things that would have to be taken into consideration when a new problem arises.
