PARALEL STRUCTURE

Parallel Structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.

Words and Phrases

With the -ing form (gerund) of words: Parallel: Mary likes hiking, swimming,

and bicycling. With infinitive phrases:

Parallel: Mary likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a bicycle.orMary likes to hike, swim,

and ride a bicycle.

Clauses

A parallel structure that begins with clauses must keep on with clauses. Changing to another pattern or changing the voice of the verb (from active to passive or vice versa) will break the parallelism.

Examples :

Not Parallel : The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and to do some warm-up exercises before the game.

Parallel : The coach told the players that they should get a lot of sleep, that they should not eat too much, and that they should do some warm-up exercises before the game.

Coordinating Conjunction of Paralel Structure

The conjunction used in this pattern are and, but, or, nor. These words are called “Coordinating Conjunction.”

Examples :1. Rifqi and his friend are coming to party.2. These dress are old but styles.3. Iva wants to go the movie or go to

karaoke.4. Anna, Iva, and Rifqi are reading in the

library.

Paired Conjunctions of Paralel Structure

In this pattern we use paired conjunction are both…and ; not only…but also ; either..or ; neither…nor.

Examples :1. Both Joni and Budi are here2. Not only Rifqi but also anna is greedy.3. Not only Aldi but also his friends are hungry.4. I’ll take either english phonology or english

syntax in this semester.5. Neither Brian nor Justin is singing.6. Neither my aunt nor my parents are talking

gossip.

Combining Independent Clauses With Coordinating

ConjunctionsIn this pattern we can use conjunction with

punctuation. Examples :1. The teacher lectured, and the students

took 2. They were happy, so they were laugh.
