REFRACTOR/REFLECTOR TELESCOPES By: Chloe, Daria, Dylan, Eleanor
REFLECTOR
Two concave mirrors make light bounce up to another mirror, which bounces light into the eyepiece.
REFRACTOR
Refractor telescopes use convex lenses to collect, focus, and magnify light.
REFLECTOR PROS/CONS
The Mirrors in the telescope have to be recoated every few years in order to function properly
Its easy to damage them, they are fragile if you handle them to roughly
The reflector is good for deep-sky objects
Large Reflectors are very popular
Pros Cons
REFRACTOR PROS/CONS
The Refractor telescope is better for observing the planets and the moon
The Refractor telescope uses lenses instead of mirrors so they don’t have to get recoated like the mirrors of the reflector telescope
The refractor suffers from chromatic aberration
Very expensive
Pros Cons
REFLECTOR HISTORY
The Reflector Telescope was invented by a Scottish astronomer named James Gregory. James Gregory was the one who designed in 1663 and then in 1689 Isaac Newton built the first Reflector telescope.
REFRACTOR HISTORY
The Refractor telescope was invented by a Dutch optician, Hans Lippershey who designed convex lenses held in front of each other, he put the lenses in a tube to make the first refractor telescope.
