Rain water from the roof can be allowed to recharge groundwater from an existing open
well or bore well. In case of an open well, filtered rainwater can be directly let in to the well
through pipe from any one side of the well. Wells can be built by digging the ground to the
required depth of 4.5m – 9m and by building the retaining wall around(preferably round) or
by inserting cement rings to avoid caving in of the sidewall

Infiltration gallery is to store rainwater temporally and allow the stored water to infiltrate into
underground aquifers. When the rainwater from the roof is allowed to flow on the ground ,
infiltration(water percolating into the ground) is less, causing more of runoff, thereby,
majority of rainwater quickly, reaches the drain or street and flow away from the building
To artificially increase infiltration, two parameters are important; increasing the surface
areas of the soil/earth in contact and creating water head on the soil/earth. This lead to
larger infiltration of rainwater into the ground
A perforated pipe need to be fitted in a layer of filter media(gravel and) One end of the
perforated pipe I inserted into borehole by drilling a hole(hole size equivalent to outside
diameter of the perforated pipe) in the casing pipe of the bore hole . The other end of the
pipe is blocked with an end cap. The end inserted in the bore hole should not protrude so
much to hinder pump installation. The holes are to be on the lower side of the pipe to
minimize silt and clay entering bore hole.
