Studies have shown that therapeutic gardens commonly stimulate the full range of our senses — memory, hearing, touch, smell and sometimes taste — necessary supplements to the visual experience. Among the garden elementsmost valued are features that represent life and health, such as trees, plants andflowers; and elements that arouse the senses, such as fragrances, the sounds ofbirds and water, and the feel of sunlight or a gentle breeze. These elements represent a feeling of distance or escape, while allowing for reflection, restorationand healing.

Alma’s Healing Garden and landscape surrounding the new Medical Center willnot only bring a therapeutic environment to the patients and staff but also the general public. Alma’s Healing Garden is at the beginning of the walking path thatwill eventually join the communities of Olivia and Bird Island.

Alma Gaukstad was born April 9, 1918 in Franklin, Minnesota, the daughter of Ingeborg and Nels Gaukstad. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheranfaith, attended country school, and graduated from Franklin High School.

On December 1, 1939 she married Carlyle Lien of Renville. A longtime member of First Lutheran in Renville, she belonged to the Legion and Sons ofNorway Auxiliaries. She died on January 22, 1986 at the age of 67.

An important part of her life was the neighborhood group of women who wouldmeet in each other’s homes. Over the yearsthere were many memories made as they gathered to study and to socialize. A specialfriend to her was Mabel Agar, her Auntthrough marriage. It was through the bequestof Mabel Agar to Alma and her daughters thatthis garden is possible.

Alma’s life was one of quiet simplicity. Shedidn’t demand of life, but lived her life fully. She loved her children and grandchildren andwas always ready to be of service in any wayshe could. Not a person who sought or

welcomed public acclaim, she held her familyand close friends in esteem. Her husband died when she was 37, leaving her withfour young children. Alma suffered the loss of an infant son and another whodied in the service of his country. It was her faith and courage that molded her into the person she was.

Disabling osteoarthritis kept her from strenuous physical activity, and in the later years, she did not have a garden. However, the few plants at her front door were important to her and she found inspiration in the beauty of nature.

A Generous Donation for the Creation of Alma’s Healing Garden

“Whether we know it or not, each of us leaves alegacy that represents who we are.

Over our lifetime, our daily decisions form that legacy. If we want that remembrance to be influenced by ourfaith, we follow the admonition to care for the sick.Support for the community is necessary to create

a center where those who require healing, receive the care they need. It is important to me to be a part of the construction of a hospital

that would provide a place of comfort and healing for the sick, for years to come.

My contribution is inmemory of my

mother, Alma Lien, a strongand courageouswoman who

provided a model ofliving one’s faith.”

MINNEAPOLIS (June 9, 2014) – Farm Credit organizations serving rural communities in Minnesota have joined to contribute $40,000 to a “telemedicine”initiative in the western part of the state. AgStar Financial Services, AgriBank,CoBank and United FCS made the contribution to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, part of Allina Health, in Minneapolis. The grant will enable cardiologists at AbbottNorthwestern to remotely treat patients at the RC Hospital in rural Olivia, MN located over 100 miles away.

“One of the significant challenges for rural communities is access to dependable, high-quality health care,” said Everett Dobrinski, chairman, CoBank.“Telemedicine technology enables residents of these communities to receive treatment from leading physicians and other providers in urban centers withouthaving to travel long distances. We’re very pleased to be making this contributionand look forward to the benefits it will deliver over the long term.”

As the largest hospital in the Twin Cities, Abbott Northwestern is recognized nationally and locally for its exceptional expertise and care. RC Hospital servesrural Renville County, a largely agricultural community with about 16,000 people. Abbott Northwestern and RC Hospital have a longstanding relationship, especially for emergency cardiac care. In addition, Minneapolis Heart Institute®

at Abbott Northwestern has had a clinic at RC Hospital since 1995.The new program, which builds on the existing Allina Health telehealth

program, is expected to launch this month. The Farm Credit grant will be used tocover the costs of the telemedicine equipment, including bedside ultrasound, as well as training for RC Hospital’s local staff. The grant was supplemented by additional funding from the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation.

Initially, the cardiac telehealth program will be able to serve six patients eachweek. Patients and medical staff will be able to see and talk with each other bycomputer. In Olivia, a hospital staff member will perform ultrasound tests on patients, and real-time images will help cardiologists in Minneapolis diagnose orrule out heart issues.

“We are grateful for this generous contribution,” said Dr. Robert Hauser, Senior Cardiologist at the Minneapolis Health Institute® at Abbott Northwestern.“The new program will significantly enhance the care available to Renville County residents and enable us to take advantage of significant advancements intelemedicine technology. Today, we can make a more accurate diagnosis usingtelehealth and ultrasound than we can in person with a stethoscope and touch.”

“People are happier when they can be cared for where they live. Telehealth improves the quality of local care and helps to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. Plus, if people need to go to the Twin Cities, the physicians will already be familiar with them, so those transitions are smoother, too,” saidNathan G. Blad, CEO of RC Hospitals & Clinics.

Cardiology is the most recent addition to the Allina Health telehealth program. At more than 20 telehealth sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin, rural health careproviders and patients can receive consultations and visits from experts within Allina Health via video. Telehealth is currently used for stroke assessment and treatment, mental health assessments and referrals, psychiatric counseling and cancer genetic counseling. Allina Health plans to offer additional services overthe next two years.

The program featured a live Telehealth demonstration and comments by Dr. Robert Hauser, Senior Consulting Cardiologist, Minneapolis Heart Instituteand other experts from Abbott Northwestern Hospital and RC Hospital & Clinics. TelehealthServices are made possible through a partnership of Allina Health and RC Hospitals & Clinicswith support from CoBank, AgStar, Agribank, United FCS of Willmar, Everett Dobrinski, AbbottNorthwestern Hospital Foundation and RC Hospital & Clinics.

Osteopenia, who ME? No way!!!“By exercising at least 5-6 days a week for 60 min or more, keeping my

weight down to near recommended BMI numbers. I eat a healthy diet atleast 80% of the time. Even though I was doing a lot of things right to avoidthe ‘later in life’ health issues. It still happens. Having several of the greatest risk factors for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis, I will be changingsome things to ensure that I can continue to do the things I enjoy withoutpain from degenerating bones and high risks for fractures. Risks I have..... small white women in perimenopausal age group. History of hypothyroidism. Family history with Mom and two sisters with Osteopenia.”

Denise Pietig

Osteopenia is the progression of bone loss which can increase a woman’sfracture rate of the hips and spine. Call RC Hospital & Clinics at (320) 523-1460for a free consultation to meet and talk with Dr. Montanaro.

Approximately 7% of breast cancer and 15% of

ovarian cancer cases are caused by mutations in the

BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. When someone carries a

mutation in either of these genes, they have a syndrome

called Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC)

Syndrome 1, 2, 3. Genetic testing, specifically BRAC-

Analysis®, identifies patients who have these mutations.

This test has become the standard of care in the

identification of individuals with hereditary breast and

ovarian cancer. RC Hospital & Clinics now offers

BRACAnalysis® testing to determine whether a patient is

a carrier of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations.

When assessing the risk of carrying these mutations

a patient’s personal and family history is collected to

investigate the risk for HBOC. Once a patient is identified

as being at increased risk, genetic test results provide the

most accurate means of cancer risk assessment for

a patient.

Knowing the potential risks can help RC Hospital &

Clinics doctors and you make better, more informed

decisions about your health, before the onset of cancer

or before a second cancer has a chance to develop.

Testing should be considered for hereditary breast and

ovarian cancer, if you:

n Have had breast cancer at age 50 or younger

n Have had ovarian cancer at any age

n Are male and have had breast cancer at any age

If your family:

n Has had somebody diagnosed with triple

negative breast cancer at any age

n Has had pancreatic cancer and an HBOC-

associated cancer in the same person or on

the same side of the family

n Has three or more family members with

breast cancer on the same side of the family

n Has had a previously identified BRCA1 or

BRCA2 mutation in the family
