    Dear Mr. Mooney,

This report presents results obtained from measurements of Becker Penetration Tests conducted

May 27 through J une 3, 2008 at the SR-522 Cathcart Road Vicinity to US-2 Widening, located in

Washington State. The primary purposes of the dynamic measurements and data analyses were to

calculate energy transfer from the hammer to the Becker drill casing and estimate the soil

resistance acting along the shaft of the drill casing. Dynamic field measurements were collected

and processed with a Model PAK Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA). Measured and calculated PDAresults included driving forces in the Becker drill rod, hammer performance (transferred energy,

efficiency and operating rate), and soil resistance active at the time of testing.

Appendix A contains background information on the PDA and our procedures for analysis of the

dynamic measurements. Case Method PDA results in graphical and tabular form are presented in

Appendix B, complete CAPWAP output is in Appendix C, and individual pull-back tests are included

in Appendix D. Washington DOT personnel recorded bounce chamber pressure, penetration

resistance and comments; their records are reported elsewhere.

    TEST DETAILS

    Drill Rods

All tests were performed on standard 6-5/8 inch Becker drill rod. This drill rod is a double-walled

system arranged such that driving forces are carried by the outside wall to a closed-end driving

shoe attached at the bottom of the drive string. The inner pipe "floats" independently of the outer

pipe. When used with an open-end shoe, the double wall system may be operated with

compressed air to return cuttings to the surface via an airlift.

    Hammer and Driving System

The hammer used was a Link Belt 180 closed end diesel hammer with a ram weight of 1.73 kips

and a rated energy of 8.1 kip-feet. The hammer cushion was reported to be a standard Link Belt

hammer cushion with nylon as the cushion material. This cushion was between the airlift spoutand the top of the drill rod. The drill operator adjusted the hammer fuel setting as driving conditions

changed. In very soft driving the throttle was reduced to avoid over-driving the casing.

InstrumentationDynamic measurements were obtained with two accelerometers and two strain transducers bolted

to a two foot long section of drill rod attached to the top of the drive string during driving. Analog

signals from the sensors were conditioned, digitized, stored, processed, and displayed with a model

PAK Pile Driving Analyzer. Selected Case Method results from the PDA, including maximum force,

maximum transferred energy, transfer efficiency, shaft resistance force, total resistance force andspeed of hammer operation were stored and later processed with our PDIPLOT software program.

The digital records of the measured signals were recorded by the PDA and stored for review and

analysis. Every monitored force and velocity record was displayed on the PDA screen during

testing and reviewed by the PDA operator for data quality assessment.

Pull-back test data was obtained with a data collection and processing system developed by Pile

Dynamics, Inc (PDI). Up to four force measurements were made with PDI strain transducers, and

up to two displacement measurements were made with PSItronix potentiometers with a maximum

extension capability of six inches. The electronic signals were transferred through a PDI signal

conditioner (Static Load Test system) to a laptop computer running GRLs Automatic Monitoring of

    Static Load Test software program.

    TEST RESULTS

    PDA Results

Results from each test hole are presented in graphic and tabular form in Appendix B. The

measured, calculated and observed values are plotted versus depth below the ground surface,

while the tables present average results for each foot of driving. Case Method results include:

energy transfer efficiency (ETR), maximum transferred energy (EMX), total soil resistance (RTL),

estimated total skin friction resistance (SFT), and hammer operating rate (BPM). Bounce chamber

pressure and penetration resistance were recorded by the Washington Department of

Transportation. Testing time histories and field notes are included with the results in Appendix B.

    CAPWAP Results

CAPWAP (CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program) is a rigorous numerical analysis procedure which

uses the measured force and velocity data to solve for soil resistance parameters and distribution.

This method combines the wave equation pile and soil model with the Case Method field

measurements. The solution includes the total static bearing capacity values as well as the shaft

friction, end bearing, damping factors and other dynamic soil properties. The process iteratively

determines the best match soil model unknowns by signal matching.

Eighteen (18) CAPWAP analyses were performed on PDA data collected at penetrations selected

by the Washington Department of Transportation. Results from the CAPWAP analyses are

summarized in Table 1. Additional details, including the computed skin friction distribution along the

pile shaft and unit friction values, are presented in the complete CAPWAP result output available in

    Appendix C.

    Pull-back Test Results

Table 2 includes the pull-back test results. The average calculated loads (adjusted for the Becker

casing weight) at one-inch displacement (peak loads if higher than load at one-inch displacement

are also included) are presented for the pull-back tests. Complete Pull-back test results (non-

corrected) in graphic form are included in Appendix D.

    DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

    Hammer Energy Transfer Efficiency

The Becker hammer energy transfer efficiency (ETR) is calculated by dividing the measured energy

delivered to the casing top (EMX), by the rated hammer energy of the Linkbelt 180 double-acting

    diesel hammer (8.13 kip-ft).

Sy and Campanella, in 1994, suggested correcting the measured BPT blow count for hammer

performance by normalizing the measured hammer performance to a reference hammer energy

    transfer of 30%:

    Nb30 = Nb * ETR/30

where Nb30 is BPT blow count normalized to a 30% energy transfer reference value, Nb is the

observed BPT blow count, and ETR is the hammer energy transfer efficiency. This energy

normalizing approach, using dynamic measurements of force and velocity, is similar to the SPT N60

correction technique where raw N-values are corrected to SPT N60 values by reference to a 60%

energy transfer standard for SPT hammers.

    Becker Casing Friction

Eighteen (18) CAPWAP analyses were performed at locations and depths selected by the WSDOT.

Table 1 summarizes the CAPWAP results and Appendix C contains the complete CAPWAP output.

CAPWAP analysis was undertaken to develop a quantitative assessment of casing friction on the

Becker pipe during the BPT program. The CAPWAP calculated skin friction for the eighteen

analyses ranged from 7 to 28 kips.

    GRL Engineers, Inc.

The CAPWAP skin friction results may be used as Rs values, in conjunction with the energy-

corrected Nb30 blow counts, to estimate equivalent SPT N60 values using Sy and Campanellas

computed BPT-SPT correlation chart developed in 1993. Low casing friction will generally result in

upward corrections to the Nb30 blow counts (higher SPT N60 values), while high casing friction

results will tend to correct the Nb30 blow counts downward (lower SPT N60 values).

The pull-back test results are not considered as reliable as CAPWAP shaft friction results for the

following reasons: the testing system (Becker drill rig) does not pull evenly, resulting in sometimes

very large bending forces at the gage location; some soil set-up likely occurs before the pull-back

test can be organized and completed; and the pull-rate varies from test to test, resulting in a more-

    or-less quasi-static test. The pull-back results varied from 11 kips (H-54C-08 at 41 ft) to 51 kips (H-

58C-08 at 80 ft). The pull-back results seem to be similar to the CAPWAP results, at similar

    locations.

It was a pleasure working with you on this project, and we hope we can assist you on future

projects. Please contact us if you have questions regarding the contents of this report.

    APPENDIX A

AN INTRODUCTION INTO SPT DYNAMIC PILE TESTING

The following has been written by GRL Engineers, Inc. and may only be copied with its written permission.

    1. BACKGROUND

The Standard Penetration Test is frequentlyconducted as an in-situ assessment of soil strength.

This test requires that a 140 lb weight is dropped 30inches onto a drive rod at whose bottom a sampler isusually installed. The sampler is driven for 18 inches;the number of blows required for the last 12 inches ofdriving is the so-called N-value. The N-value may beused as a strength indicator for foundation design oras a means of assessing the liquefaction potential ofsoils.

Obviously, the SPT hammer efficiency is an importantconsideration when using the N-values for designpurposes. Measurements have indicated that theenergy in the drive rod is sometimes only 30% andand may reach 90% of the potential or rated energy ofthe SPT hammer (E-rated =0.35 kip-ft or 0.475 kJ ).

The type of hammer used to drive the rod is the mainreason for these variations. On the average, theenergy in the drive rod is 60% of the standard ratedenergy.

Because of the variability of energy, methods basedon N-values are considered unreliable. However, measurements during SPT testing using the Case

Method can be done on a routine basis and thesemeasurements yield the transferred energy values. With measured energy, EMX, known, an adjustmentof the measured N-value, Nm, can be made as follows.

    N60 = Nm[Em / (0.6Er )] (1)

Thus, if the measured energy value is equal to thenormally expected transferred energy of 60% of E-rated then the adjusted and measured N-values areidentical. On the other hand, if the measured energyis only 30% then the adjusted blow count will bereduced by 50%.

    2. DYNAMIC TESTING AND ANALYSIS

    METHODS APPLIED TO SPT

The Case Method of dynamic pile testing, named afterthe Case Institute of Technology where it was

developed between 1964 and 1975, requires that asubstantial ram mass (e.g. a pile driving hammer)

impacts the pile top such that the pile undergoes atleast a small permanent set. Thus, the method isalso referred to as a High Strain Method. The CaseMethod requires dynamic measurements on the pileor shaft under the ram impact and then a calculationof various quantities. Conveniently, for SPTapplications, the measurements and analyses aredone by a single piece of equipment: the SPTAnalyzer. The Pile Driving Analyzer(PDA) is alsosuitable to perform these measurements and dataprocessing.

A related analysis method is the Wave EquationAnalysis which calculates a relationship betweenbearing capacity, pile stresses, transferred energyand field blow count. The GRLWEAP programperforms this analysis and provides a complete setof helpful information and input data. This programcan be used very effectively to simulate the SPTdriving process.

    3. MEASUREMENTS

GRL uses equipment manufactured by Pile

Dynamics, Inc. The system includes either an SPT-Analyzer (SPTA) or a Pile Driving Analyzer(PDA), an instrumented rod section and twoaccelerometers. SPT energy testing is very closelyrelated to and borrows procedures from dynamic piletesting. Those interested in the basis of the SPTenergy testing method may obtain extensiveliterature on dynamic pile testing from GRLEngineers, Inc.

3.1 SPT Analyzer or Pile Driving Analyzer

The basis for the results calculated by the SPTA or

PDA are strain and acceleration measured in aninstrumented rod section. These signals areconverted to rod top force, F(t), and rod top velocity,v(t). The SPTA or PDA conditions, calibrates anddisplays these signals and immediately computesaverage pile force and velocity thereby eliminatingbending effects. The product of these two

  • 7/30/2019 GRL-Measurements and Analysis on Becker Penetration Tests SR-522 Cathcart Road Vicinity to US-2 Widening

    10/156

    A-2

measurements is then integrated over time whichyields the energy transferred to the instrumentedsection as a function of time (see Section 4.1).

For convenience and accuracy, strain measurementsare usually taken on an instrumented section of SPTdrive rod. Ideally, the section properties of theinstrumented rod and those of the drive rod are the

same, however, using subs, other sections can alsobe utilized.

For the instrumented section, PDI provides a forcecalibration in such a way that the output of theinstrumented rod is directly calculated without theneed for an accurate elastic modulus or crosssectional area of the rod section.

The acceleration measurements are often demandingin the SPT environment, because of high frequencyand high acceleration motion components. An

experienced measurement engineer, therefore, has toevaluate the quality of this data before finalconclusions are drawn from the numerical resultscalculated by SPTA or PDA.

SPTA or PDA records are taken while the standard N-value is acquired in the conventional manner. Thisthen allows a direct correlation between N-value andaverage transferred energy.

    3.2 HPA

The SPT hammers ram velocity may be directly

obtained using radar technology in the HammerPerformance Analyzer. The impact velocity resultscan be automatically processed with a PC or recordedon a strip chart. HPA measurements yield a hammerkinetic energy, but not the energy transferred to thedrive rod.

4 RECORD EVALUATION BY SPTA OR PDA

    4.1 HAMMER PERFORMANCE

The PDA calculates the energy transferred to the pile

    top from:

    E(t) =oItF(J)v(J) dJ (2)

The maximum of the E(t) curve is often calledENTHRU or EMX; it is the most important quantity foran overall evaluation of the performance of a hammer

and driving system.EMX allows for a classification ofthe hammer's performance when presented as, eT,the rated transfer efficiency, also called energytransfer ratio (ETR) or global efficiency.

    eT = EMX/ER (3)

where ER is the hammer manufacturers ratedenergy value or 0.35 kip-ft (0.475 kJ ) in the case ofthe SPT hammer.

Often in the SPT literature one finds also referenceto the EF2 energy. This evaluation is based onassumed proportionality between force and velocity(see also Section 5):

    v(t) =F(t) / Z (4)

where Z =EA/c is the pile impedance, E is the elasticmodulus, A is the cross sectional area and c is the

speed of the stress wave in the pile material..

Combining equations 2 and 4 leads to

    EF(t) =oItF(J)2 / Z dJ (5)

The EF2 transferred energy value is the EF-value atthe time t =2L/c, where L is the drive rod length andc is the stress wave speed in steel (16,800 ft/s or5,124 m/s). Since the force is easier to measure thanboth force and velocity, Equation 5 is preferred bysome test engineers. However, the EF method isfraught with errors and certain correction factors

have to be applied to make it approximately correct.Among the error sources are the following:

Proportionality is often violated prior to time2L/c. The proportionality between force andvelocity in a downward traveling wave onlyholds if the wave does not encounter adisturbance prior to reflecting off the pile toe.Such disturbances include a change in crosssectional area, an open or loose splice or joint,or resistance along the shaft.

Using only one force measurement precludesa data quality check based on theproportionality between force and velocity.

Thus, a force measurement that is for somereason in error may not be detectable, whichwill lead to errors in the EF2 value. Dataquality checks will be discussed further inSection 5.

  • 7/30/2019 GRL-Measurements and Analysis on Becker Penetration Tests SR-522 Cathcart Road Vicinity to US-2 Widening

    11/156

    A-3

The use if EF2 is therefore not recommended but it isoften included in result presentations for the sake ofcompleteness.

    4.2 STRESSES

During SPT monitoring, it is also of interest to monitorcompressive stresses at both the top of the drive rod

    and at its bottom.

At the pile top (location of sensors) the maximumcompression stress averaged over the rods crosssection, CSX, is directly obtained from themeasurements. Note that this stress value refers tothe instrumented section. If the rod has a differentcross sectional area then the stress in the rod will bedifferent from CSX.

The SPTA or PDA can also calculate, in anapproximate manner, the force at the rod bottom,

CFB. To obtain the corresponding stress, this forcevalue should be divided by the appropriate crosssectional area, e.g. by the rod area just above thesampler or by the sampler area itself. Of course, non-uniform stress components as they might occur at thesampler tip due to a sloping rock are not consideredin this calculation.

    5. DATA QUALITY CHECKS

Quality data is the first and foremost requirement foraccurate dynamic testing results. It is therefore

important that the measurement engineer performingSPTA or PDA tests has the experience necessary torecognize measurement problems and takeappropriate corrective action should problemsdevelop. Fortunately, dynamic pile testing allows forcertain data quality checks because two independentmeasurements are taken that have to conform to theso-called proportionality relationship.

As long as there is only a wave traveling in onedirection, as is the case during impact when only adownward traveling wave exists in the rod, force andvelocity measured at its top are proportional

    F =v Z (5)

where Z is again the pile impedance, Z =EA/c. Thisrelationship can also be expressed in terms of stress

    F =F/A =v (E/c) (6)

    or strain

    , =F/E =v / c (7)

This means that the early portion of strain timeswave speed must be equal to the velocity unless the

proportionality is affected by high friction near thepile top or by a pile cross sectional change not farbelow the sensors. Checking the proportionality isan excellent means of assuring meaningfulmeasurements but is only truly meaningful forperfectly uniform rods. Open or loose splices, forexample, will lead to a non-proportionality. For SPTrods it is fortunate that usually no soil resistance actsalong the shaft and for that reason, proportionalitycan exist until the stress wave returns from samplertop or rod bottom unless connectors are notsufficiently tightened or have a significant mass.

Velocity data quality can also be checked by lookingat the final displacement, DFN, which is calculatedfrom the acceleration by double integration. If thecalculated final displacement is much higher or lowerthan indicated by the N-value, the accelerometerattachment may be loose or the sensor may befaulty. If major drift in the velocity is observed, theEMX value may be in error, even thoughproportionality from impact to time 2L/c exists. In thiscase, it may be useful to evaluate the energytransferred to the drill rod at time 2L/c, which iscalculated by the PDA or SPTA as the E2E quantity.
