Good-Morning Optimists…
June ? A month for teaching an old dog to see. The amazing thing about this“JOB” that I am trying to give away, is that 61% of the time I end up on the wrong side of anidea or thought. I get locked into what we are involved in or doing, using my somewhat
mathematical way of thinking and miss the “BigPicture”.Take for instance my “Prez-Sez” just last month – I
judged the success of the “Wood Boat Show” onnumbers and more specifically $ dollar $ numbers $,giving the impression we were unsuccessful. To makematters worse I then took that same mindset into ourinvolvement in the “ ” expecting thesame outcome – shame on me.What I heard from the Autism group, the Pirates Cove
owners and even some of our more rational givingmembers, was a “Great Big Thanks” for helping make
the “ a success and assisting in “BringOut the Best in KIDs”. It may be their KIDS, but KIDs all the same. Please considerthis my retraction – we were successful in both events,in that we contributed to our community. Let mefurther pass on to all that worked so hard, myTHANKS and the THANKS of the other Clubs andBusinesses.
**************************************************While I have the taste of crow lingering in my
palate, let me tell you another story. Along about thefirst of the year, a member who will remain
anonymous, but who initials are “BS” called me asideand reminded me that 2010 or actually June 15, 2010

was going to be the club’s 25th anniversary—nicereminder. Even though it was on the club calendar,he suggested I verbally share this information withyou, the members and the board – ASKING eachmeeting, what do we want to do ? Silence. Silencethat I took to mean “No one wanted to do anything.Maybe even apathy. Long about 10:12 p.m., May30, I was sitting at the computer, I told myself it wastoo late and I needed to shut up about the club’s 25 th
anniversary, there was NO time left to “PLAN”. Yet Ifelt compelled to send out just one more plea, here it is:
– back atthe computer or had I ever left?“Bill, With everything going on and it being 15 days away I hadnot relayed my conversation with Bob Schaefer. He would like tocombine our annual picnic and the 25 year celebration. He is ona mission to purchase the pork butts for pulled pork andchicken. You and I have the awesome responsibility of buying therefreshments. – Lee”.
Then with only a twinkling in his eyes, Bob was off in a
flash, he picked his team of little helpers, made his assignments, gathered up grub and withMarion by his side prepared and cooked a culinary delight…He magically put on the mostsuccessful social gathering in my time with the Optimists… The 91 attendees included theDistrict Governor Jim Miner, District Secretary HaroldStratz, Lt Governor Harry D’olive, President of theLillian Optimists Club – Peggy Pope & 6 members, 33GOLD Shirts with Don Delmarter singing “GODBLESS AMERICA”. Everyone was treated to the bestBBQ Pork & Chicken in Lower Alabama by Bob &Marion Schaefer and for those who hung tough, a full7 hours of live music was provided
. My humble THANKS to allthat attended, with a special THANKS to Bob &

The Optimist CreedPromise Yourself:
To be so strong that nothing can disturbyour peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosper-ity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that thereis something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everythingand make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work onlyfor the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about thesuccess of others as you are about yourown.
To forget the mistakes of the pastand press on to the greaterachievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at alltimes and give every living creature youmeet a smile.
To give so much time to the improve-ment of yourself that you have no time tocriticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noblefor anger, too strong for fear, and too
happy to permit the presence of trouble.
