Step One:Insert Drive Rod through the anchor and place against surface.

Step Two:Use GPD to install the anchor at the required depth.

Step Three:Use JackJaw® to remove Drive Rod and load lock system.

Step Four:Use Gripple Wire Cutter to cut wire below grade if required.

The Terra-Lock™ System gains its stability through the creation of a truncated cone of soil. This consolidated mass provides the resistive securing body and is formed in two steps:

Gripple provides engineering design support to ensure you specify the optimum Terra-Lock™ system to meet your project requirements.Once ground characteristics have been established, our technical team can calculate anchor loads and design performance; Whether through inititial site evaluation, preparation of technical drawings, supporting submittals or onsite testing to validate designs. The Gripple Technical Support Team can work with you at every stage of a project to realise the complete turn-key solution.

Step One: After driving to the correct depth, the wire is tightened; this rotates the anchor so that the load bearing surface is parallel to the ground surface.

Step Two: The wire is further tightened to compress the soil above the anchor’s bearing surface. The compression transfers towards the surface to form a cone of soil which prevents further anchor movement.

The load bearing capacity of the system is determined by: anchor size, anchor depth and soil shear angle. Due to the complex interaction between these factors, it is advisable that a geotechnical report is utilised as part of the engineering plans to ensure the appropriate anchor size and drive depth are selected.

Loyn Bridge, Lancashire

Loyn Bridge, a three span narrow masonry arch bridging the river Lune between Hornby and Gressingham was at risk of damage due to erosion of the bank of the River Lune upstream.

To armour the bank and ensure the continued structural integrity of the bridge whilst providing a fi nish in keeping with the stunning natural environment, the Terra-Lock™ System was installed by LCC Operations in conjunction with an erosion control geotextile. This was secured by an anchor trench at the crest of the slope and rock rolls at its toe. Cuttings from willow trees further upstream were planted through the geotextile to complete the installation.

The Terra-Lock™ Anchor was installed quickly and easily using the Gripple Petrol Driver, and then instantly load-locked by the JackJaw™. The erosion control geotextile was secured in place with the integral TL-100 top termination, specifi cally selected as vegetation re-growth was a primary objective.

Using the Terra-Lock™ System eliminated the need to crimp at the surface to secure the mat in place, reducing the contractor’s time on site. To improve intimacy between the geotextile and the newly seeded soil below, as well as to further aid re-establishment of natural vegetation, the patented TL-P1 high load pins were specifi ed and deployed around the anchors. These were installed with a general purpose 18v combi-drill and bespoke chuck in less than half the time normally taken to install rebar pins or stakes, and provided superior pull-out loads.

Case Study

Cobnor Point, West Sussex

Cobnor Point was identifi ed as an area that suff ered heavily from erosion. It could have been at risk of fl ooding, which would have aff ected the agricultural land and heritage features. In the past, the shoreline was defended using several diff erent methods including large stones, sandbags full of cement and rip-rap. However, the area remained at risk from tidal fl ooding, providing reason to fi nd an alternative and more secure solution.

As a result, a new northern embankment was constructed and armoured using the Terra-Lock™ System and a type of erosion control mat. The matting extended across both sides of the embankment and terminated in a clay-fi lled trench at the toe of the wet side.

The Terra-Lock™ Anchor enabled straightforward penetration of the mat without tearing or otherwise damaging it. The installation of the Terra-Lock™ Anchor provided immediate and eff ective stabilisation of the mat. This was further reinforced by the TL-100, helping to maintain intimate contact between the mat and subgrade surface. Similarly, the open face of the TL-100 allowed for vegetation re-growth and presented an ideal solution to preserving the natural appearance of the eroding shoreline.

The project benefi ted from the wide range of installation tools including the Drive Rod, JackJaw® and the Gripple Petrol Driver. Paired with the Terra-Lock™ System, the overall install time was reduced to a minimum.

Blackmoss Reservoirs

Two dwellings situated below the Blackmoss Reservoirs in Barley, Lancashire were identifi ed as at risk from fl ooding should either or both reservoirs burst their banks after heavy rainfall. The Terra-Lock™ System was installed in conjunction with an erosion control mat to reinforce the slope that was situated in the new fl ood water path.

The objective of the project was to create a new emergency spillway below the reservoirs. Any fl ood waters would be directed away from the dwellings and in to an existing waterway, so they could drain safely.

The site included an area signifi cantly steeper than the surrounding land and formed part of the route for diverted fl ood water. Due to the severe incline, passing fl ood water could reach speeds of approximately 6 m3 per second. The area could not be reinforced by planting trees, as this method would impede water fl ow and take an unacceptable amount of time to become eff ective. The specifi cation required the mat to be mechanically anchored and the Terra-Lock™ System was selected to prevent uplift, protect the subsoil and withstand the high fl ows in the event of a breach.

The ease and speed of installing the Terra-Lock™ System provided a quick and secure solution. The open face of the TL-100 would allow vegetation to grow through over the course of the product’s 50 year design life, so that when the root systems began to establish themselves, the Terra-Lock™ System would support rather than compete with natural securing methods.

Hillsboro Canal, Package 2

The Hillsboro canal is managed by the South Florida Water Management District and forms one of the local fl ood control system’s main arteries. Following regular inspection, a 10.5 mile reach was identifi ed as being in need of signifi cant repair where sections of the bank had eroded and fallen into the canal. This presented problems to local infrastructure and homes which run parallel to the eroding banks.

A solution was chosen to ensure functionality of the canal for decades into the future. It was decided that the lower portion of the slope was to be armoured using ACBMs which extend below the waterline. Above the ACBM, where turf alone provides insuffi cient erosion protection, HPTRM was used. In both instances, the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System was chosen to provide ease of install and a high factor of safety. Owing to the specifi c requirements of the two matting products, a broad Gripple Terra-Lock™ System was employed utilising: TL-100, D4 and TL-40A (ACBM Plate) as terminations.

The hard, underlying soil contained coral rocks and presented tough driving conditions. However, use of the Gripple Petrol Driver (GPD) eased installation and allowed a drive depth of 1.2 m (4 ft) to be achieved. Each of the anchors was subjected to a load test requiring at least 80 kg (180 lbs) of pullout. The Terra-Lock™ System passed all tests as part of this process and provided the safety required even under tough conditions.

The broad system used on site benefi ted from a wide range of install tools including: GPD, JackJaw®, Drive Rod, D4 Tensioner and Wire Cutters.

Five Mile Creek

Five Mile Creek is a water management canal which protects local homes byacting as a vital fl ood defence. Previously the banks had been armoured with HPTRM, however this was secured using only straight pins with a low pullout resistance. Following an intense rainfall event in which 457 mm (18”) of rain fellover 12 hours, the river level rose dramatically, broke its banks and fl owed into homes. During this event, the armoured slopes had sloughed and lost much oftheir integrity. Clearly a system with a higher factor of safety was required.

To correct the failed slopes and provide protection into the future, the banks were fi rst re-graded, then armoured with rip rap at the toe and HPTRM up to the head. The high fl ow velocity of the channel necessitated increased pullout resistance of securing methods. As a result, the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System was chosen to secure the HPTRM and provide an additional factor of safety. This system has subsequently been proven to be eff ective, holding under a 203 mm (8”) rainfall event.

The sandy soil meant that the TLA-2 anchors were easily drivable to a depth of1.2 - 1.8 m (4 - 6 ft) and comfortably met the required 70 kg (150 lb) pullout resistance. The installation process was eased through use of Gripple installation tools including; GPD, JackJaw®, Drive Rod and Wire Cutters. On this site the JackJaw® was of particular importance, allowing for straightforward extraction of the Drive Rod.

C-41A Repair, Okeechobee

C-41A, Okeechobee, Florida, is a major waterway managed by the local water management district. The local soil is extremely soft and consists mainly of very fi ne sand and silt. As a result, erosion is a constant issue as it causes major damage to the banks of the waterway as well as heavy siltation of the channel which could damage local habitats and infrastructure.

As part of a previous conservation project, the banks were protected using HPTRM. The mat on this occasion was laid using only rock ballast at the head and toe. This was then overlaid with turf. Subsequent to the work, the rocks at the bottom of the slope had been washed away, which then led to the HPTRM fl oating up and losing any eff ectiveness by exposing the toe to undermining.

A more secure solution was provided by the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System. This time when the HPTRM was installed, anchors were placed underwater at the toe and all along the slope to the head. This ensured the HPTRM maintained intimate contact with the subgrade surface, thus providing the erosion protection required.

The system makes use of the time saving, purpose-designed TL-100 which provides security, aids the ease of installation and has minimal impact on vegetation growth. This component coupled with the range of Gripple Installation Tools ensures a swift, straightforward and correct set up is achieved every time.

Prima Feeder Canal, Arizona

The Central Arizona Project directs water through a number of canals extending from the Colorado River into particularly arid regions within the state. Canal realignment construction was completed in 2011. Since the completion of the project, graded slope areas around the perimeter of the outlet structure of the Prima Canal have experienced substantial erosion. As a result, the area was designated for repair and protection using erosion control matting.

Although degradable short term rolled erosion control products were initially discussed, it was suggested that an anchor reinforced vegetation system utilising HPTRM was to be used to extend design life. As part of this solution, the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System was used as a method to add security to the matting. The System employs a number of elements which aid installation ease, reduce installation time and provide a bespoke solution for the securing of HPTRM.

Central to this system is the Terra-Lock™ Anchor (TLA-2), the design of which enables straightforward penetration of the mat without tearing or otherwise damaging it. On this project the required 0.9 m (3 ft) drive depth was reached with ease through use of the GPD and Drive Rod. The TL-100 top termination secures the matting in place and by utilising patented Gripple technology, is able to secure the wire under load without the need for time consuming crimping.

The open face of the TL-100 allows vegetation to grow through, so that when the root systems begin to establish themselves, the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System supports rather than competes with natural securing methods.
