THE GREY MAN IN THE GRAVEYARD Answer Sheet 16.6.20 1. Match the unfamiliar vocabulary with its modern day equivalent Alonger – alongside Wittles – victuals (food) Partickler – particular Han’t – hadn’t 2. “With a great iron on his leg” what does this tell us about the man? The man has a large chain on his leg. We can assume that he is or was a prisoner. He may be a convict on the run. 3. Can you explain how the author uses vocabulary to make the man sound ‘scary’? The author describes the man’s appearance as being weather beaten and scary. He says that he has been ‘soaked in water, smothered in mud and lamed by stones’. The man ‘glares and growls’ at Pip which suggests that he is not a friendly character. As the text goes on, the man gets more physical with Pip, at one point he tips him upside down in a movement that is ‘sudden and strong’. 4. Why does Pip live with his sister? Pip lives with his sister because he is an orphan. He went to the graveyard to visit the graves of his parents. 5. In your own words, summarise what the man says to Pip. The man asks Pip his name and where he lives. He wants Pip to bring him a file and some food. If Pip tells anyone that the man is in the graveyard, he threatens to cut out and eat his heart and liver. 6. What do you think Pip does next? What would you do if you were Pip? I think Pip runs back to his village as fast as he can to obey the grey man’s orders. If I were Pip, I would take the file and food to the man. I’ve told him where I live and who I live with so there is nothing stopping him coming to find me if I don’t.
