Learning and Teaching update : Deepening Thinking

As many of you will be aware, this academic year teachers have been planning their lessons using the DR ICE model. DR ICE is an acronym for 5 features that should be in every lesson or series of lessons. The acronym is expanded below: Deepening thinking, Role modelling learning, Impact on Progress, Challenge and Engagement. Throughout every lesson, teachers will ask students to deepen their thinking. They may do so by

moving from very simple class questions like: ‗how many characters were there in the story?‘ or

‗how do you calculate speed?‘ to more challenging questions like: ‗can you explain why the speed

of the car fluctuates over time?‘ Or alternatively, students might be given a challenging exam ques-

tion to attempt or a difficult real-life problem to solve or importantly, each time they offer a response

they may simply be asked to take their response to the next level. Building this skill up over

time enables all of our students to learn the skills to be able to tackle the questions they

may face in GCSE or A level exams.

Yr 7 Readathon Fortnight

‗Keep Calm and Read a Book‘ will be our motto as Readathon Fortnight for Year 7 will be running again from Monday 26

th November to Friday 6

th

December. Students will need to get as many sponsors as they can for the books they read, with all proceeds

going towards raising funds for the school library. The child who ‗earns‘ the greatest sum by the end of the Fortnight will win a £20 National Book Token. Through Readathon we hope to continue promoting the use of our fantastic library, as well as a genuine love of reading amongst the students. All Year 7 students will be encouraged to read copiously in their weekly Accelerated Reader lessons; students can be sponsored per book, per word or by points earned (from the book quiz). There will be various book-based activities running throughout the fortnight during Tutor Time and Assemblies, such as ―Drop Everything And Read!‖ and ―Get Caught Reading‖. We will also be running the ―Extreme Reading‖ photo competition again, whereby stu-dents find the most bizarre (yet safe) place to read their book e.g. in a cupboard, on their bike… and get a picture of themselves whilst reading. The best pictures will be put forward to our panel of Readathon Judges who choose the best three. The top three prize-winners will receive National Book Tokens between £5 and £15. We do hope the students will enjoy Readathon 2013 and use it as an opportunity to discover new titles, authors and perhaps a whole new genre they have never tried be-fore and generally to make reading part of their daily routine, both at school and at home. So … READY, GET SET, READ!!!!

Head of Year 8 & Year 9 Mr. Dyer Christmas Celebration As-semblies If you are interested in per-forming at the Year 8 or 9 end of term assembly, please see me asap.

Academic Review Thank you so much to all of the parents who attended their meetings on Wednes-day. It is such an important day to set targets for your children in a holistic capacity and not just academically, which is clearly the focus. If you have yet to meet your child‘s tutor, please contact them via phone, email or using the planner to arrange a convenient time to have the meeting take place. Please support the school in striving for excellence in terms of your child‘s education.

pupils both to school and

lessons and creating strate-

gies to help pupils, as well

and teach them to be more

punctual. We will be aiming

for a reduced number of lates

up until Christmas and will be

monitoring this weekly as well

as mentioning in assemblies.

Parents can help by ensuring

their children are organised

the night before and leave for

school slightly earlier than

normal to ensure they are

through the tutor room door

at 8:25am. The school is op-

erating a new method of

monitoring lates to lessons

and time will be expected to

be caught up at the end of

the day. The most improved

form compared to last year,

will win a prize in the final

assembly of the year. Watch

this space for more infor-

mation.

Since the return to school after half term, we have been monitoring pupils‘ uni-form and so far it has been good. However I would like to raise the issue of the weather changing and win-ter being around the corner. Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear and a coat for going to and from school, given the likeli-hood of heavy rain, snow, ice etc in the next few months. It still amazes me just how many pupils are drenched through and cold by the time they even get to school in the winter. This obviously has a direct link with illness if pupils are not dressed in a warm and dry fashion. Thanks for your support.

Termly Focus This term we will be focus-

ing on lateness. We will be

monitoring the punctuality of

Academic Tutoring Day

was a great opportunity for

parents and tutors to meet

and for students to set

targets to enhance their

learning and to further

their participation within

the Grey Court School

community. I have also

looked at the PC1 reports

in detail and I am very

impressed by the rate of

progress being made by

Year 7 students.

The participation register

for Year 7 is just about

complete—if your son or

daughter has yet to get

involved in an after school

activity or club—please

could you encourage them

to do so, I would like 100%

participation by the end of

term. Also with the end of

term in mind and our Cele-

bration Assembly looming,

please could all Year 7s

make sure they have col-

lected all outstanding house

points and let their form

tutor know how many they

have, by Monday 9th De-

cember.

‗Readathon‘ starts on 25th

November, please see Ms

Fincham for further details –

but in short, this is your

chance to read as many

books as you can in two

weeks! Are you up to the

Challenge?

On Monday 25th November

at 6.45-8.30pm there is an

e-safety workshop for

parents event at Grey

be a very useful and

informative session, to

which all parents are

welcome. Further de-

best of luck.

Anti Bullying Week Students have participated in a range of 'Anti-Bullying' related activities within tutor time to raise awareness of this sensitive issue, as well as equip students with the guidance and support needed if they were a victim

or witnessed bullying in school. A weekly quiz and reflective activity took place on Friday morning for students to test their knowledge and understanding. Thank you to all KS4 tutors and students for their

Year 11 French and Spanish Speaking Controlled Assessments These assessments will be held from 27th to 29th November 2013. This is the first formal speaking assessment and is worth 15% of the final GCSE grade (the second assessment will follow in the Spring term). MFL classes are studying towards the assessment theme and it is vital that all classwork and homework is completed to the best possible standard, in order to be prepared for the assessment. Students should be preparing and learning their assessment. Teachers will be available to record students' preparation materials to assist them with pronunciation concerns. any students who are anxious about this assessment, the MFL faculty are running catch up sessions from 3-4pm on Thursday afternoons in L2 and L5. Anyone is welcome.

Sixth Form Update

“A Day in the Life…”

Monday 18th

November

Many thanks to the two hundred of you who came to our evening on Monday and I‘m sorry for those who missed out. Please contact me if you want the details shared on Monday or any other advice or information. We separated parents and students into different rooms and with a slightly different em-phasis we addressed what the school Sixth Form experience will be like. Parents were greeted by ‗shmoozing‘ pianists, wine and nibbles, whilst the students were trying to identify the photographs of staff when they were sixth formers (some very old pictures!) whilst tucking in to pizza at the start of the quiz! The message was the same in both rooms; the Sixth Form will be here for September 2014 and will meet the highest standards you have come to expect. The Outstanding provision will continue and, with a lot of hard work from staff and students alike, the students will gain entry to the University of their choice. We shared our ideas of the timetable structure and how lessons will be taught, not ‗delivered‘, employ-ing innovative Deep Learning practice as well as more traditional lectures, alongside seminars and tuto-rials. Students will be assessing their own learning on-line on a routine basis and we will be ensuring that every learner is able to achieve their full potential. We shared the vision for Grey Court Sixth For-mers‘ two year experience in which we focus on maturing skills in year 12 to empower independence in year 13. We shared our Enrichment ideas which every Grey Court Sixth Former will undertake, each playing a Leadership role in the lower school by supporting clubs and societies. Each student will also be expected to complete the GEAR (Grey Court Education and Achievement Record) which tracks the non-classroom based achievements and accomplishments in order to provide the basis for University application through UCAS. All Oxbridge and Medicine students will get bespoke support and guidance to gain entry and every student will have access to academic and pastoral support throughout what will be a very demanding and very busy two years. I made the point that we will have assessed every stu-dent twice by half term, in term one of year 12. I made the point that we are offering an hour per week per subject.

We will achieve the highest levels of academic success whilst providing the personal guidance you will

need to compete with those looking at entry to the top universities here and abroad. We are meeting

with Inspire Worldwide and the Livingstone Tanzania Trust next week to confirm the commitment to pro-

vide opportunities for international development work at the end of year 12. We are in partnership with

The Richmond Education and Business Partnership to provide ‗Employability‘ opportunities in which the

students can shadow/accompany or observe a member of the profession they aspire to join.

As I write this, I can hear the diggers on the school site preparing the foundations for the new building. We are very excited and, whilst I continue to interview the applicants who meet the November 22

nd

deadline, our commitment to those who have already accepted a place and have come through the school is unflinching. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further information: [email protected]

Sixth Form Update

We have now received over 200 applications from over 30 different schools.

WORK EXPERIENCE (SIXTH FORM)

Parents may already be aware that there is no longer a statutory responsibility for schools to provide work experience for students at Key Stage 4. The main opportunity to do work experience will be of-fered to students in the Sixth Form which opens in September 2014. Therefore a decision was made last year not to offer this opportunity to Year 10 or Year 11 students. There will be a few exceptions to this if students are following vocational courses or are likely to do so in the future.

CAREERS AND OPTIONS CHOICE DAY FOR YEAR 9

On 10th March 2014 we will be holding a Careers and Options choice day for Year 9. As a part of this day, we will be running a networking event, where individuals from different careers and occupational

backgrounds will come into school and talk informally to the students about their experiences. Last year a number of parents kindly volunteered to help. We have run this event for several years and it has

proved to be a very successful. If you think you would be interested in helping, please con-

tact Mr.Poole either by phone or by email on [email protected]

E-safety parent training: 25 November 2013 @ 6.45 p.m

Parents are invited to attend an e-safety training workshop to be held at Grey Court School (School Li-brary) on 25

th November at 6.45 - 8.30 p.m. This session will be delivered by Peter Cowley who runs

training sessions throughout Richmond. The workshop will focus on: How is the world of young people different from ―ours‖? How do young people use the internet? What risks can that present? How can we help to minimise those risks? If you would like to reserve a place at this workshop, please contact reception by phone or e-mail [email protected]

On Wednesday 13th November 2013 a group of Year 8‘s went to see Midsum-mer Nights Dream starring David Wal-liams and Sheriden Smith. The produc-tion was enjoyed by all students and they had a great time. Although they thought the production was good, many thought that our own School Production was ac-tually a lot better. Some even said that they thought they had copied elements of the production from our one. We did think we had seen someone from the theatre in the audience. On Tuesday 26th November all Year 10 Drama stu-dents will be going to see 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’ in London. The following day, students will be in controlled conditions all day writing their play review. Please remember slips and payments. On Friday 30th November we also have the chance for students in Year 8 and 9 to see Twelfth Night at the historic Rose Theatre on London's bankside. The tickets are on a first come, first served basis and will sell out quickly, so look out for a letter in your drama lessons and assembly. Children in Need. The girls participated in a ‗Dance-athon‘ and the boys competed in a ‗Football-athon‘. All students came to school dressed in their PE kits and throughout the day they all experienced a lesson of dance (girls) or football (boys). The girls enjoyed a lesson of current dance from a specialist dance instructor, ranging from street dance to zumba dancing. The boys took part in a 5-a-side football tournament out on the main school field, with 12 pitch-es in use and them playing a round robin tournament. Each student paid £1 for the privilege and all the money raised will be sent to Children in Need. So far, the total amount raised is £700! It was year 9‘s turn in period 2, who raised £160, year 11‘s period in 3 who raised £170, year 7‘s in period 4 who raised £180, year 10‘s in period 5 who raised £180 and year 8‘s in period 6 who raised £160. Thank you to everyone who donated; as we all know, the money raised has gone to a very wor-thy cause. We will be organising a different fundraising event each term. Hopefully we can raise even more money next time.

Nicky Phillips (8W) Achievement Nicky has received a Jack Petchey Achievement Award at Kingston Royals Swimming Club (KRSC). Her coach, Mark Smith, put Nicky forward for the award for demon-strating conscientiousness in her swimming ses-sions. Nicky's name was then published in a list, along with four other swimmers put forward by their coaches and the other swimmers in the club were asked to vote. Nicky was presented with her award by her coach on 12 November and she is currently considering how to spend the £200 award money for KRSC to benefit the swimmers. As a winner, the Jack Petchey Foundation invited Nicky to attend the Jack Petchey Foundation Clubs and Youth Organisations Celebration Event at Wandsworth on Thursday 5th December 2013. During this event, each award winner will be presented with a boxed gold medallion on stage to recognise their achievements.

Year 9 and Year 10 rugby teams Congratulations on reaching the final of the Middlesex Cup/Plate. Please note that the finals will all be played at Allianz Park (Saracens Ground). Directions can be viewed on this link... http://www.saracens.com/allianz-park/ Please note that there are other matches before/after your game and only one pitch and only two changing rooms. Therefore you will need to share the changing rooms with another school playing before or after you. Your warm up may also be slightly restricted so please plan appro-priately. You should have access to the changing room approx 45 minutes prior and post kick off. There will be representatives from Middlesex Rugby on hand to co-ordinate the finals and prize giving. There will be a presentation immediately following each final (before the next game starts) where every player will receive a medal and the winning school the trophy. Please head to this presentation asap after the final whistle as time will be tight. The London Society of Referees will be providing the referees but each team is required to pro-vide a touch judge. There will be a physio at the ground in case of injury. Parents and supporters are encouraged to attend and refreshments will be available to buy on the day but there will be no official match tea afterwards. The normal ESRFU rules apply which include: Matches will consist of two periods of play with a maximum of five minutes for half time. U14 will play 25 minutes and U15 will play 30 minutes each way. There will be no limit to the number of replacements and rolling subs will be allowed. In the event if a draw at full time, two periods of seven minutes will be played until one teams scores (ie golden score). If no score occurs during the extra time periods then the final result will stand as a draw and the trophy shared. U14 Plate Tuesday December 3rd 1.30pm kick off U14 Cup Tuesday December 3rd 3pm kick off U15 Plate Thursday December 5th 1.30pm kick off U15 Cup Tuesday December 5th 3pm kick off
