Mrs Nicholls - Interpret representations
Mrs Watson - Engage with science
Each teacher will have two weeks with the classes across
the school. This will cover four specific science lessons.
We have some wonderful experiments and activities
planned across the school and I am excited to see and
hear about the learning.
ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
We have some wonderful events in term two. Take a
look at our calendar (please remember at times things
need to change, so keep up-to-date with this each
newsletter).
We also have a range of sports involving netball, soccer,
rippa and ki-o-rahi and cross country. Some of our
Kaitaia College tuakana will be working with our
students in these sports. We love to nurture the
relationship we have with our neighbouring school, and
of course seeing our wonderful past students!
As per our vision and mission, one of our key statements
say PCS “nurtures the development of each person’s full
growth, in a continuing tradition of excellence”. We
aim to provide multiple opportunities for our students
to access the curriculum with excellence.
CHANEL AND MARCELLIN DAY
Our whanau groups Chanel and Marcellin are
celebrating this term, celebrating the Saints that they
represent. Friday saw us dressed in our best green,
celebrating St Peter Chanel at Mass.
Tuesday 6th July we wear yellow and give service to
others as St Marcellin demonstrated. Our senior
students have the opportunity to serve others in the
community. Past activities have included providing
morning tea to Hospice, Kaitaia Hospital Nurses and
Switzer Home nurses. Mowing a neighbours lawn,
visiting an elderly person or writing a special card to
someone in prison. If you are able to support our senior
students off-site with an activity, please let us know. It is
about spreading our Mercy charism to care for others.
The junior children will do a clean-up around the school
and parish and stay on site for safety reasons. Whanau
are welcome to join us for the afternoon of service that
day and join in helping others.
God bless
Kathryn Carey (Principal)
Greetings, Kia Ora, Talofa, Bula Vinaka,
Konnichi wa, Dobrodošli, Sawa dee, Failte
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful term
break. We are looking forward to a solid term of
learning and have some exciting things planned for our
students.
REPORTS
In term 2 our year 4 to 8 students receive a written mid
-year report. Our junior students (year 1-3)continue
with their anniversary reporting, where they receive a
report 6 weeks before or after their birthday, depending
on where it lands.
Our 3 way conferences will be held on Monday 26th
June. We will have a half day and students will finish
lessons at 12 noon. Our teachers will have a quick
break and then begin their first meetings with whanau
from 12.30pm until 6pm. Some of the larger classrooms
will also have Tuesday 27th June available too. These
sessions are 3 way, as your child is the leader of their
learning and it is important to set some good goals
towards their learning, together. Please put these dates
in your diary as our normal classroom programme will
not be taking place due to the interviews, so children
will need to be collected from school.
It is always an exciting time to celebrate the learning
that is going on, and review the goals that the children
and teachers are working towards. Data has been
gathered in term one and new goals are now set and
ready to action for term two.
SCIENCE
We are excited to move into a Science focus for term 2
and 3 in our Inquiry Learning. Our focus from the NZ
curriculum this term is “Living World and Planet Earth
and Beyond”. Each class will rotate through the science
capabilities with our teachers as follows:
Mrs Ryken - Nature of Science
Mrs Dromgool - Gathering and interpreting data
Mrs Cutler - Critique evidence
Mr Gunn - Using evidence
Special points of interest:
Monday 5th June—Queen’s Birthday Break
Tuesday 6th July—Marcellin Day—Service

St Peter Chanel
(or how God works in really really odd ways)
By Wiga Autet
Bishop Pompallier - while on his way to New Zealand - had founded a mission on the island of Futuna in Novem-ber 1837 and posted two of his team of missionaries there: Fr Peter Chanel, SM and Br Marie-Nizier Delorme. After only three and a half years of ministering on the is-land, Peter's missionary work was brought to a brutal end when he was clubbed to death on the 28th April 1841.
So, was Peter successful?
How does one measure a success? An achievement?
In the short time Peter spent on Futuna he made maybe 20 converts: baptising four adults, the rest were probably children – most of them sick and dying anyhow… and so, one could say that he had virtually achieved nothing.
And yet…
We might want to ‘revisit’ the benchmarks we use to measure success in life.
Peter Chanel (and our Lord) challenge us to move away from what we might consider a success to what they con-sider a success. In fact, success or failure is often not completely in our hands, and sometimes we have to face what seems almost a certain failure.
But it is not success that is required of us, only fidelity.
St. Peter Chanel’s work ended in his own death in the face of what seemed a total failure. Out of that failure howev-er, God brought about the success Peter was seeking. Pe-ter’s violent death brought about the conversion of the island shortly afterwards, and the people of Futuna re-main Catholic to this day.

Prayer to St Peter Chanel:
St Peter Chanel,
you left your homeland to proclaim Jesus, Saviour of the world, to the peoples of Oceania. Guided by the spirit of God, who is the strength of the gentle, you bore witness to love, even laying down your life.
Grant that like you we may live our daily life in peace, joy, and in love. May your prayer and example call forth from our midst many workers for the Gospel so that God’s kingdom may reach to the ends of the earth.
St Peter Chanel, pray for us.
Amen.
God Bless Phil.
We would love to take this
opportunity to extend a
warm welcome to our new and not so new stu-
dents. A wonderful surprise to see the Smith wha-
nau return from Australia. Welcome home!

to be immersed in our wonderful Catholic School.
Spread the word!

PLEASE NOTE!! A friendly reminder to all drivers to STOP at the bottom of the hill when leaving our school drive into Eden Terrace. Thank you for your co-operation with this.
This calendar gives you an idea of what is coming up during the term. Put the dates somewhere important to remember them. Dates can change at times, so please check this calendar each newsletter. If there are last minute changes we will notify you by text, and add comments onto our school Facebook page. Make sure you contact Helen in the office to ensure you are part of our “phone tree”. Term one is certainly a
busy and exciting term!
A reminder, for safety of our children,
please drive slowly in the carpark. No child
is to leave the gate area unsupervised.
Please do not park in the yellow lines.
Whanau, let us always remember to show whanaungatanga at Pompallier. Our values are
interwoven in all that we do. Aroha, Atawhai, Tika and Pono. Ask your child what our value is for the week and see if they are using these not only at school, but home too.

INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF OUR SCHOOL
We are currently selling “pavers” that you can get your name engraved into a brick. This is a lasting record of your donation to the school. The pavers will be laid in the school grounds. If you wish to take part, please come in and or call the office. $60 per brick. An example is attached. We are looking forward to seeing the path of names as a special way to treasure our special whanau.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMME
Our Sacramental Programme
starts next Friday 12th May at
3pm in the church foyer. All
parents and whanau are
welcome . This programme is a
special faith journey and we keep
all of the students taking part,
in our prayers.
Congratulations to Electra Devalli and George Chelatt who were the recipients of the Father Pat Award for 2017. The criteria for the award was based around Father Pat Littlewood’s aspirations for our stu-dents. That they give service to the parish and school, show our values in their words and actions, and are wonderful role models of our Catholic faith. These two students fit this criteria and we are ex-tremely proud of them! This award was presented at Mass on Easter weekend.
Final figures were handed in by our wonderful PTFA for
our gala in term 1. We made a profit of $6170.00. It took
a little longer to get the final figures as many raffles still
needed to be sold. The parish and school split these funds and have $3085.00
each. It is a wonderful community event that we pour our energy into each year. We are certainly
very blessed.
Our students are looking forward to getting a brand new swing in the playground. A huge thank
you to the generosity of those that supported us with donations, services, time and energy. A special
thank you to Torina Shanks who co-ordinates the entire event. It is a huge job and we are so grateful
for your dedication! Remember, we are always looking for help for fundraising events as our school
fees are sent to the Auckland Diocese, we do not keep them. Any extra resourcing relies on fundrais-
ing.
