Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation Last October, 500 Canadian leaders from government, business and academia honoured 10 outstanding Canadians – including four Young Canadians at the 31st Annual Manning Innovation Awards Gala in Ottawa . The Foundation awarded $161,000 in prizes to the 2012 winners. “We were honoured Senator Pamela Wallin, O.C., S.O.M. and The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Heritage and Official Languages, hosted the gala this year,” said Foundation Chairman John Read. The Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, sent greetings congratulating the Foundation for being a valued partner in championing Canadian innovators. “Research, development and innova- tion are the foundation for building a robust knowledge economy for the 21st century,” he said. “Since 1981, the Manning Foundation has encouraged these pursuits....and is a valued partner in this endeavor.” “We are grateful to the dedicated Manning Awards Gala Steering Committee under the outstanding leadership of Trustee Lisa Samson. Committee members donated many hours reaching out to their contacts about sponsoring the Awards Gala and providing the Foundation with valuable advice,” said Mr. Read. Scotiabank has been the Gala Sponsor of the Awards Gala since 1982. Carleton University and the University ofAlberta both hosted symposia about innovationin October to coincide with the 31st AnnualManning Innovation Awards Gala.

Carleton University created an inspiring dayattended by innovators, Manning Awardwinners, and well-known national and regionalinnovators based in the Ottawa area. ManningAward winners Geoffrey Auchinleck and TerryBigsby shared their experiences about gettingtheir innovations to market. Young CanadianAward winners Kelcie Miller-Anderson,Adelina Cozma, Eric LeGresley and Carols Xuspoke about who and what inspired themto study science.

A distinguished group of panelists providedtheir insights about innovation. Participantsincluded Gilles Patry, President & CEO, Cana-dian Foundation for Innovation; Steve West,CEO Nordion; Dr. Chad Gaffield, President,Social Sciences and Humanities ResearchCouncil (SSHRC); Dr. Tessa Hebb, Director, 3Ci(Carleton Centre for Community Innovation)and 2012 Manning Award nominee; TraceyClark, Board of Advisors, Hub Ottawa, Manag-ing Director, Bridgehead Coffeehouses andRoastery; and, Dr. Rena Bivens, Pauline JewettInstitute of Women’s and Gender Studies.

Dr. Roseann O’Reilly Runte, President & Vice-Chancellor, Carleton University provided the

opening address and spoke about Carleton’scommitment to innovation. The Symposiumwas moderated by well-known Ottawaentrepreneur and broadcaster Mark Sutcliffe.

The morning sessions were followed bya networking lunch where young Ottawaentrepreneurs displayed their innovativeprojects.

In Edmonton, Northern Alberta ChapterChair Sol Rolinger organized a similarevent at the University of Alberta withpresentations by key note speakers anddisplays by students.

Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Noël Kinsellarecognizes 2012 Manning Award winners

An honour for the 2012 Award winners attending the 31st AnnualManning Innovation Awards Gala in Ottawa was a private luncheonwith Canada’s Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Noël Kinsella.

The Speaker hosted the 10 winners to lunch in the Speaker’s DiningRoom, one of the most famous rooms on Parliament Hill. After theluncheon, the winners were invited to view the Senate proceedingsfrom the Speaker’s viewing gallery. The Speaker then honoured eachof the winners by introducing them to the floor of the Senate.Their names are now permanently recorded in Hansard.

Canada-Wide Science Fair – Lethbridge, AB, May 11 to May 18.

Calgary-based Trustee Dick Wilson and Selection Committee memberDr. Morley Hollenberg joins Foundation President David Mitchell inLethbridge this May at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

“We really look forward to attending the annual Canada-Wide ScienceFair each year,” said David Mitchell. “Seeing hundreds of young peoplefrom all over Canada presenting their projects and sharing their ideasis inspiring. Last year there were 75 entries vying for Young CanadianAwards” he said. As soon as winners are announced, the Foundationimmediately calls hometown newspapers, radio and TV stations, andposts winners names and stories about their innovative projects on theManning Awards website (www.manningawards.ca) and Facebook page(www.facebook.com/ManningAwards) to make sure these talentedYoung Canadians receive some well-deserved hometown attention.

The Ernest C. Awards Foundation proudly presents45 Nominees for the 2013 Manning Innovation Awards.This years’ nominees are from British Columbia, Alberta,Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec andNova Scotia.

Their inspiring innovations include agriculture products,medical devices, software programs, consumer products,education tools and social innovations.

David Mitchell, president of the Ernest C. Manning AwardsFoundation in announcing the 2013 nominees, said theFoundation is encouraged to see so many innovations beingdeveloped throughout Canada. “Innovations created by thisyears’ nominees have been developed in highly sophisticated

university labs as well as home basements and hobby rooms,”he said. “These Canadians come from all walks of life. We areinspired by their dedication and commitment.”

Nominees are carefully screened to ensure they meet theFoundations’ awards criteria. The applications now go throughthe Foundation’s review process before being presented to theFoundation’s distinguished Selection Committee, recruitedfrom across Canada, who will choose the 2013 winners.

“Qualifying as a nominee is an important honour for theseinnovators,” said David Mitchell. “We are now working withManning Award Chapters in their home provinces to getthem well-deserved home town recognition later in thespring,” he said.
