Greetings from the Lifestyle Team

Welcome to the Festive Embracia, Moonee Valley Christmas edition newsletter. The recent shopping spree held at Embracia in November allowed residents, family members and staff to do some Christmas shopping or merely spoil themselves! It was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Late November and throughout December there were school choir performances from local schools. Some of our residents are grandparents of the performing children from St Martin’s De Porres and East Keilor Essendon Secondary College. There was laughter, singing and tears of joy in the audience.

It is important that Residents have access to community and local educational institutions. These special holiday events are important for residents who don’t have the ability to leave their homes and join in community festivities. There will be more Community Youth Choir organisations performing at Embracia in the near future. Lifestyle endeavours to foster and grow Embracia’s intergenerational programme in the new year allowing for more interaction with mutual benefits for both age groups.

Embracia’s next choir performance from the MCGI Youth Choir will be held on Saturday the 27th of January at 2.00pm in the activity room. Please feel free to come along and enjoy the performance. There will be a Karaoke style performance from the youths, ranging from the age of 13 to 25.

November Lifestyle Events

Embracia commemorated Remembrance Day on Friday the 10th of November. The service was carried out by Reverend Mark Dunn from the Simpson Barracks in Macleod. There was a formal laying of the wreath, a minute’s silence, prayers and a heartfelt speech made by Padre Dunn. Embracia resident Verna made a speech about her time in the army as a housekeeper/carer for the soldiers. She shared her narrative with everyone. Resident Bruce also spoke about his time in the Australian Air Force and how he actually had received the news that the WW2 was over, first hand by Morse Code. He was the official bearer of great news!Armistice Day is on the 11th of November and marks the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918.

December Lifestyle Events

The month of November and early December were jam packed with activities with special Christmas themes. There were art & craft workshops, Men’s woodwork sessions, Happy Hour with Santa, Photos with Santa, Christmas Carols sing- a- long and performances by local school choirs. Overall, music is an important medium especially in the form of carols. Not only does it allow residents to reminisce and instil new memories, music and singing is also an expressive Intervention which allows residents to improve their mental and physical well-being. Music may be used to enhance an individual’s physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic and spiritual health.

The highlight was the Christmas Carols performed by the East Keilor Essendon Secondary College and the Grade 1-6 children from St Martin’s De Porres in Avondale Heights. A few of the residents are relatives of the students including grandparents. Hence, it was a especially emotional performance for these residents.

Bunnings from Maribyrnong ran a tile painting workshop where residents designed psychedelic styled tiles to their liking. This enabled residents to use their creative skills, fine motor skills, eye coordination, socialize, relax through mindfulness and enjoy themselves. Embracia is thankful to Bunnings community spirit and support throughout 2017. Bunnings will be holding a Christmas workshop on the 21st of December from 1.30-3.30pm in the Activity Room. Residents will be treated to gifts by the Bunnings Santa. A big thank you to Bunnings for their Christmas raffle donations.

During one of our session of Happy Hour, Embracia had a special guest keeping in theme with Melbourne Cup. Lifestyle staff had arranged for ex-jockey Midge Didham to have a Q & A session and presentation. Midge was the 1970 Melbourne Cup Winner. Residents enjoyed taking pictures with Midge and his son John, along with his prized possession, the valued Cup!

More December festivities will be posted in the next newsletter including the awesome first Embracia Residents, Families and Friends Barbecue held on the 9th of December.

The Lifestyle Team would sincerely like to thank Residents and Families for all their positive feedback and assistance throughout the year. Your support and encouraging input has been phenomenal and makes our job enjoyable and possible. On behalf of the Lifestyle Team we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

From the Management Team

Thank you to all the families and friends who attended our Christmas BBQ. It was a joyous event and the weather was great too. It truly was exciting to see our residents and families mingling happily with others. We appreciate you coming on the day to celebrate our first Christmas BBQ so thank you from all of us at Embracia.

We would like to remind our families once again that if you are visiting during meal times to please move to the café with your loved ones. The effect of a large number of people in the dining area especially in our memory support households is quite distressing for our residents. They feel that their space is being invaded and this can trigger increased anxiety especially in the evening. We thank you for your assistance in this matter and please see us if you have any questions.

Hairdressing services are provided every Thursday and payment can be made directly to the hairdresser on the day. You may also want to arrange a direct debit so please feel free to speak to Tony our Hairdresser. There is a hairdressing book in the foyer if you wish to book this service for your family member or you may let Catherine in the Reception know.

There is a Pharmacy Box installed on the ground floor just outside the lift. You may lodge your payment or any queries you may have in relation to your invoices directly to the Pharmacist.

A gentle reminder to all families to please do not leave large amount of cash with your loved ones. It is distressing not only to the residents or families but also to the staff if the money gets misplaced. If it helps you to manage your family member’s finances, we can hold small amounts of “Petty Cash” for when there is a need to purchase items from nearby stores etc. Please see Catherine at the Reception and she will store it safely for you.

If you would like to take your family member home for Christmas there is a form in the foyer for you to complete. This will allow the staff to get your loved ones ready in time for when you come to pick them up. Please give the completed forms to Catherine and she will let the staff in the household know.

Please ensure if you are bringing in any new items of clothing to please give them to our laundry staff for labelling first before putting them away in the residents’ wardrobes.

INTRODUCING STAFF MEMBER SUE

I was born in Avondale Heights and spent my childhood there. I got married at St. Martin’s in Avondale Heights, my school church. I’ve been married to Charlie for 38 years. I have nine children. The eldest is 36 and the youngest is 19. I also have 10

grandchildren. I returned to work after having been a stay at home mum and grandmother. I am a laundry assistant and also do housekeeping duties. I love

working with the residents. The interaction is phenomenal. The staff are amazing. Embracia has a great culture and I adore the vibes from all the residents and their

families. They are friendly, helpful and patient.

My hobbies and things I enjoy outside work is everything and anything to do with my family, especially caring for my mother.

My pet hates are - I don’t like being idle and I don’t like confrontation. I just want people to get along. My motto is ‘’I am easy going and easy to please.” I hope that

people feel the same way about me.

Something we don’t know about you-

I love the Baileys- the drink. Yum!
