22018-19 Annual Report

Greetings from the Department of Residence! Our purpose, the reason DOR exists, is to help students succeed. In other words, helping students succeed is our “why” for “what” we do and “how” we do it. Our priorities include supporting student access to the benefits of living on campus. Developing and sustaining inclusive, vibrant, engaged and transformative communities in Residence. Advancing Residence facilities that support student development throughout their academic career, and providing high quality, affordable dining experiences for students, faculty, staff and guests of the University community.

Our accomplishments take a campus-wide commitment and collaborative effort. Together, our most recent accomplishments have included decommissioning Hillside Court Apartments and modernizing Lawther and Noehren Halls. Piloting a new Faculty Fellows program to provide students in Residence out-of-class mentoring relationships with faculty. Creating a new Live-2-Succeed program which provides participating students a $200 Student Success Scholarship. Conducting annual assessment to inform continuous improvement. And developing a comprehensive Residence Master Plan to serve students we do not yet know and provide programmatic services that do not yet exist.

We welcome your continued ideas and suggestions relative to all aspects of the Department of Residence, including your ideas and suggestions related to our housing facilities, our dining, retail and catering services, and the residential living experience we provide students.

Together, we help students succeed!

3 2018-19 Annual Report

Living on Campus Matters Fall 2019, approximately one-third of allstudents attending UNI live on campus:

Students who live on campus their first

year adjust quickly to college; develop

meaningful relationships with peers, faculty and

staff; engage in more extracurricular, social and

cultural events designed to facilitate learning and success; and exhibit greater

gains in psychosocial development.

Students who live on campus their first two years earn an

average GPA of 3.1 versus 2.7, are 28% more likely to persist,

and are 30% more likely to graduate in four years.

Graduating in four years versus five saves students approximately

$66,000 for the cost of attendance ($21,000) plus lost earnings during

the fifth year ($45,000 median starting salary for UNI alum).

42018-19 Annual Report

Access Means EverythingAffordability facilitates student access to higher education and the benefits of living on campus, which is particularly important to our first-generation, low-income, marginalized and foster students.

DOR has maintained an average annual rate increase of only 2% over the past three consecutive years to support student access to the benefits of living on campus.

DOR created the Live-2-Succeed program offering students a $200 Student Success Scholarship, which effectively eliminates any rate increase. One-third of UNI’s new freshmen will participate in the program in 2019-20.

Assessment informs continuous improvement:DOR participates annually in both the Skyfactor Benchworks Resident Assessment and NACUFS (National Association of College and University Food Services) Customer Service Benchmarking Survey. DOR continues to score higher than the average of other respondents in most factors rated.

Partnering across departments and divisions to refresh programmatic offerings:

Piloting a new House Fellows Program this year to enhance relationships between faculty and students outside of the classroom.

Offering a new Jump Start community this year and a new Women in Stem community next year.

Developing new programmatic efforts to support the recruitment, retention, and matriculation of students attending Hawkeye Community College and living on campus at UNI.

Most recent capital improvements:No longer suitable for student housing, Hillside Court Apartments (278 units) were decommissioned to help keep housing costs down for students who live on campus

Roth Apartments were converted to all single bedrooms to provide our transfer and graduate students the space and privacy they desire.

A portion of the Jennings Court Apartments were furnished to better serve our international students.

Renovation of Noehren Hall is underway in an effort to retain more second-year students on campus. Renovation includes converting community restrooms into private pod-style restrooms and modernizing the space.

5 2018-19 Annual Report

Future VisioningDOR is developing a Residence Master Plan (RMP) to guide future planning and decision-making relative to serving generations of students we do not yet know and providing programmatic services that do not yet exist. The primary focus of the RMP is determining the number of facilities needed, the right mix of facility type, the right bed capacity, the optimal location of facilities on campus, and the impact on dining operations.

Specific priorities and desired outcomes include:
