The School of Music, Art, and Theatre (SMAT) begins its second year this fall, after spending last year discovering “A New Synergy” between our three programs, as described in an article of the same title in this summer’s edition of the North ParkerPlanning to date has focused on potential curricular and programmatic offerings that reflect the new collaboration, so stay tuned for news of developments as this year progresses. We cordially invite you to attend the events listed in this newsletter in all three areas, and it is a rich offering indeed. We are looking forward to welcoming our students back to campus in just a few weeks, in addition to several new part-time faculty members, as well as Jessica Wardell, who is joining our Theatre Department in a full- time capacity as Assistant Professor of Theatre and Director of Design and Production. We hope to see you soon! Best wishes, Craig Johnson, Dean, School of Music, Art, and Theatre Runebergskören BSB Finnish Choir The all male-voice choir from Porvoo, Finland presents the grand finale concert of their American tour in celebration of the centennial of Finnish independence Co-sponsored by the Center for Scandinavian Studies and the Finnish-American Chamber of Commerce-Midwest. OCT. 6 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Concert Band: Eighth Annual Music for Special Families Concert Families of children with autism and special needs can freely enjoy the enriching power of music in a safe and welcoming environment. A pre-concert “instrument petting zoo” begins at 7:00 p.m. OCT. 7 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Canadian Chamber Choir Join us for a special performance by this critically acclaimed Juno-nominated professional ensemble, conducted by and under the artistic direction of North Park’s own Julia Davids. On tour in Chicago as they honor Canada’s 150th anniversary as a colonized nation, the CCC pursues artistic excellence in every performance while always remaining true to is core mission: building community through choral singing. This evening’s program includes inspirational performances of diverse music by Canadian composers both established and emerging. OCT. 13 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Fall Choral Concert The North Park University Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale, and University Choir, led by Julia Davids and Thomas Tropp, will collaborate on an uplifting program entitled “How Can I Keep From Singing?,” including the arrangement by Gwyneth Walker of the same name. The choirs will present music that explores our deep connection to singing. The Women’s Chorale will include, within the framework of a Missa Brevis structure, works by contemporary composers Jeff Enns and Byron J. Smith, along with the lyrical “Ave Verum” by Gabriel Fauré and Antonio Vivaldi’s thrilling Gloria. The Chamber Singers ensemble will be joined by student flautist Rebekah Harvey and will offer Hassler’s “Cantate Domino,” Daley’s “In Remembrance,” and Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird,” as sung by The King’s Singers. Additional works on the program include selections by Mozart, Rutter, and arrangers Caldwell and Ivory. University Choir will also spend the semester exploring a number of Canadian works, in collaboration with a residency with the Canadian Chamber Choir. Come hear the glorious voices of the North Park University students as they come together in song! OCT. 27 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Jazz Ensemble Concert Join us as another season of jazz begins -- featuring the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos. Faculty Recital: You-Seong Kim, soprano The program includes selections by Paisiello, Grieg, Schubert, and Bolcom, as well as Korean art songs and more. Terree Shofner-Emrich is the collaborative pianist. OCT. 29 2:30 pm Anderson Chapel NOV. 2 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel University Orchestra Concert The University Orchestra presents a program that includes Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, Opus 12, featuring student soloist Kevin Kalal. NOV. 7 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Opera Scenes All’s Fair in Love and War, directed by Jodi Gage and conducted by Nyela Basney. Graduate and undergraduate students portray characters in pursuit of their deepest passions in opera scenes by composers including Bernstein, Donizetti, Britten and Gounod. NOV. 10-11 7:30 pm Lecture Hall Auditorium Concert Band Concert Joe Lill conducts a varied program for the concert band idiom. NOV. 12 2:30 pm Anderson Chapel Chamber Ensembles Concert Student chamber music ensembles including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboard perform a varied and engaging program. NOV. 14 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Gospel Choir Concert This popular ensemble is back with another program of praise in the traditional and contemporary genres. NOV. 18 7:30 pm Anderson Chapel Festival of Lessons and Carols – Worship Christ the Newborn King! North Park’s annual Advent celebration features the University Choir, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale, Gospel Choir Touring Ensemble, and University Orchestra.
