CELEBRATING THE SPIRIT OF NISHKAAM SEVA
Greenwood High hosted a musical programe organized by SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth), a non-political people’s movement that started in 1977 by its founder, Dr Kiran Seth. It organises programmes of classical music and dance, folk arts, crafts, yoga, classic cinema screenings, heritage walks, etc. inside school and college campuses throughout the world to make students more aware about Indian and world heritage. This initiative makes education more holistic and meaningful as it highlights all that is abstract, subtle, inspiring and mystical in the world teaching one to look within oneself. SPIC MACAY runs on the energy of volunteers who come from all walks of life - students, teachers, housewives, professional and retired people, young and old. Nishkam Seva is a key aspect of the movement.
Eminent artist Vidwan Shashank Subramanyam who plays the flute in Carnatic style, was accompanied by Shri Ojas Adhiya on the table, Lelo Nika from Belgrade on the accordion, Thommy Andersson on the double bass who comes from the Swedish folklore music tradition , Goerge Mihalache on the cimbalom who is the 6th generation of a family steeped in Romanian gypsy music.
The ensemble enthralled the students with their music and various improvisations which were their own compositions. They further enlightened the audience on their queries about music and how the instrument worked. It was a truly an enriching experience for us at Greenwood High.
