R&B/pop reference?). Martin Khoshaba also lit the lamp for a final score of 7-0. Asked how in such a lopsided match he was unable to get on the score sheet, midfielder Art Rosiles, clearly not understand-ing the premise, said, “What do you mean? I thought there was a prize at the end of the season for not scoring.” As a post script, because the goals were flying into the net so fast, nobody kept track of the assists. On October 28, 2012 the Green White 1st Team hosted Connection SC at Metro-Majewski Park. It

was a cold and blustery day that made for difficult conditions on the pitch. But things heated up in the second half and in what is starting to become a GW-Connection tradition, the game saw several ejec-tions. This time something sparked a gathering at midfield. It took the referee and both ARs several minutes to sort things out. In the end, the ageless Mirek Modlezewski was shown the exit with his sec-ond card of the game and a Connection player was given a straight red. All the while, Matt Connor was pointing fingers. This all tran-spired after Green White had taken the lead through Martin Khoshaba. The boyish Joe Klingelhoffer, fresh off his first shave, served into the box where Khoshaba took it off his chest and volleyed a rocket into the net. Green White continued to press and looked the better side through all of the second half. But late in the contest, Eric Spiess was whistled for a soft foul inside the box. In what was literally the last strike of the game, Connection converted from the penalty spot; com-pleting the smash and grab to escape with a point. (Reported by Fritz Schneider). On October 17, 2012, the GWO30 Team hosted last year’s champions,

SC Lituanica, at Metro-Majewski Park. Green White started the match by controlling both the possession and tempo while playing into a strong wind and steady rain. Fifteen minute into the fray, Dan “Birmingham” Briggs opened the scoring with a ferocious shot to the far post from the top of the box. But Liths, with the advantage of the wind at their backs, hit back for three (3) unanswered first half goals to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Follow-ing the break, Green White scored within a minute of the restart through Paul Makovic’s wind-aided shot from 35 yards that swerved into the lower left corner. Fifteen minutes later, Briggs collected his brace with a 30 yard free kick that evened the score at three apiece. GW was thought to have grabbed the game winner through Rob Czop, but he was adjudged to be offside. But no matter, for with ten minutes remain-ing, Chris Mortonson let fly with a speculative ef-fort from 45 yards that carried on the wind; squirted under the goalie in the wet turf and into the lower corner of the goal. O30 TEAM - NEWS AND NOTES

On October 13, 2012, the O30 Team hosted United Serbs at Metro-

Majewski Park. Despite the final score, the game was close for much of the match. Serbs took an early 2-0 lead, but Green White pulled one back when the keeper fumbled a shot from Edin Sedjinovic with Brandon McLemore Johnny on the Spot to clean up the spilled milk. GW was thought to have equalized on a McLemore brace, but the goal was disallowed by an off-sides call on Chris DeRosia, who wasn’t even involved in the play. Green White chased the one goal lead until the dam broke in the final 20 minutes when Serbs turned in three unanswered; the last on an own goal by Les Rebbeck as he desperately tried to keep the ball from rolling into the net. The pre-pubescent contractor did everything he could as he fumbled, stumbled and bumbled to the ground, even trying to sweep the ball out of the goal with his hands, but to no avail as it slid into the net on the wet grass. (Reported by Fritz Schneider). Squad: Gabby Sepiashvili (k), Keith Andersson, Greg Boltz, Dan Briggs, John Christopher, Rob Czop, Chris DeRosia, Tim McBride, Brandon McLemore, Nick Paul*, Les Rebbeck, Edin Sejdi-novic, Axel Vega, Nate Walker, Chris Wixson. After toppling last year’s league champions, the Green White O30 Team looked to duplicate the performance

against the current league leaders, AAC Eagles. Unfortunately, a cou-ple of late call-offs left the team short of players and no goalie. As a result, John Parsinen took up the mantle in the first half while Axel Vega deputized following the intermission. Eagles got on the board first off a deflected cross, but Green White equalized before the break when Erik Mansfield was fouled in the box and Parsinen sauntered up from the back to convert the pk. With the teams level on the score-board, GW’s 11th man showed up to make it 11 players a side. In the second half, Green White grabbed the lead when Rich Moroney latched into a through ball from Mansfield; beating the keeper to the far post. But the lead was short-lived and Eagles equalized when the referee turned a blind eye to a clear off-sides. The game looked des-tined for a tie until Eagles scored late to steal the victory. (Reported by John Parsinen and Fritz Schneider).

In other Metro AH O30 League action on October 20, 2012: Vikings - Lightning (not reported); Serbs 2 - Szymanski 0; Schwaben 2 - Hel-lenic 0; Sockers 1 - Liths 9.

On October 24, 2012, the GWO30 Team played a mid-week fixture against Sockers FC. The match was ex-

pected to be a reunion of sorts as former GW players such as Henry Ospina, Dave Johnson, Alex Jurado and others were rumored to by ply-ing their trade these days with the Sockers. But as the teams lined up, there were no recognizable faces across the center circle. It was unfor-tunate too because Sockers could have used them. As it was, Sockers could only rouse nine players and it looked like it would be a lopsided affair. But nothing ever goes according to script for our O30s and sure enough, the undermanned Sockers were first on the board when a slightly too casual Keith Andersson gave away possession in the back. It was literally the first time in the opening 15 minutes that Sockers had crossed midfield. Green White soon got things back on track when Rob Czop raced around the left back to pick out Greg Boltz in front of the net. Boltz’s shot caromed off the leg an unsuspecting Erik Mans-field for the equalizer. Shortly thereafter, Czop cut out the middle man and served up Mansfield directly for the game winner. It remained 2-1 into the second half until Edin Sedjinovic was fouled inside the box and converted his own PK. Thereafter, Chris DeRosia and John

Parsinen scored late goals to make the final score 5-1. Despite the lopsided score, GW showed a madden-ing inability to finish. Several players each had a handful of misses inside the six that made the Socker’s keeper look like the reincarnation of Shep Messing. For his efforts, and despite being on the los-ing side, the Sockers’ keeper earned MOTM honors and a well deserved beverage in the clubhouse. (Reported by Fritz Schneider). On October 27, 2012, the GWO30 Team played their last game of the cal-

endar year against Schwaben AC. After an even opening 20, Schwaben was first to get on the board off a cross into a scrum. The ball ultimately found its way to the foot of a Schwaben player wide open at the far post. Five minutes later it was 2-0. GW re-sponded on the break when Chris Wixson stole pos-session in the middle of the park and played up to John Parsinen. With a couple of touches, Parsinen

returned the ball to a hard chugging Wixson who chipped the keeper to the far post. The reprieve was short lived, however, as Schwaben came right back to extend the lead to 3-1. Ultimately, Schwaben added another in the second half for a final score of 4-1. But the talking point of the game was a spectacular clear-ance by Les “OG” Rebbeck. The Green White mid-fielder picked up the moniker late in the season with an unprecedented string of own goals. The streak ended with the Schwaben match, but not for want of trying. In an effort to clear a ball out for a corner, Rebbeck reportedly struck the ball with a little extra mustard. His attempt to put the ball out of play, how-ever, came a little too close for comfort and struck the woodwork with such force that it rebounded beyond the 18 yard line for a break the other way. Unfortu-nately, Rebbeck’s misdirection momentarily confused Brandon McLemore and the newlywed had to be tackled by his teammates as he tried to shoot on his own goal from 65 yards. O40 TEAM - NEWS AND NOTES

The GWO40 Team’s October 3, 2012 rescheduled match against AAC Eagles will forever be remem-

bered in many circles as the “Ewok-Mini Me Cage Match.” The first half was rolling along in uneventful fashion until John Dunkas (aka “Mini-Me”) had a clearance intercepted for a break the other way. Upset about the errant pass to begin with, Mini-Me felt further ag-grieved when team mate Mel Qoku (aka “Ewok”) did not exactly hus-tle back to cover the break. In the Ewok’s defense, the forward was off sides and was so whistled by the referee. But that did not calm the situation between the two defenders. What ensued was like watching a ball of fur and naked mole rat square off in a battle to the death; ani-mated by high pitched squeals, flying saliva and plenty of flailing arms and legs. Thankfully, someone grabbed a hose and chased the two varmints away. In the second half, there was actually some soc-cer. Todd Schneider was thankful to put aside his own personal de-mons that had kept him off the score sheet for the better part of five months by taking an inlet from Greg Healy and turning to serve up Jeff Baker who had snuck behind the defender on the far side. Green White doubled the advantage when a calmer John Dunkas slotted Omer Hadzic inside the box. With the game seemingly in hand, the neatly quaffed Nick Paul* found himself alone on the end line with the ball at his feet after rounding the keeper. But with the net minder hopelessly out of position and both Hadzic and Rich Moroney un-marked inside the six, Paul*, against all known laws of physics, opted for glory from an impossible angle. Of course, the ball rolled harm-lessly across the face of the goal as everyone stared at Paul* in amazement. But the opportunistic Mark Stein chased down the ball down and from the same acute angle on the opposite side, he too opted for the personal accolades with Moroney and Hadzic still waiting in the middle. Somehow Stein’s effort snuck into the net and Paul* im-mediately started lobbying for the assist. After much debate, Paul* was begrudgingly awarded the assist, but it was agreed that like Roger Maris before him, his name will forever be marked with an asterisk. In reaction to the committee’s decision, Paul* was indignant saying, “You can’t do that! Its un-American. Look at my hair, its perfect.” As the game drew near to a conclusion, David Breines and Armando Carlo somehow managed to clear a frenzied melee on the line and preserve the clean sheet. (Reported by Fritz Schneider). Squad: Armando Carlo (k), Jeff Baker, David Breines, John Dunkas, Mike Grosse, Omer Hadzic, Greg Healy, Barney Hernan-dez, Rich Moroney, William Navas, Nick Paul*, Mel Qoku, Rus-sell Rosenberg, Ahmed Saleh, Todd Schneider, Mark Stein, Chris Wellman. There was not much to report from the October 28, 2012 match between the

Green White O40 Team and Wisla. GW held off the visitors in the first half and felt good about the accom-plishment knowing that in the second half they’d have the advantage of the wind at their backs. But not more that five minutes after the restart, Wisla threw out the book on conventional wisdom and scored against the wind. That was good enough for the victory and all three points. Following their midweek victory over AAC Eagles, the GWO40

Team hosted Hellenic United on the weekend. The match had its moments but they were all over shad-owed in the second half when William Navas came to the sideline complaining of shortness of breath. It turned out to be a bit more than that as the mid-fielder’s heart was racing uncontrollably. To make a long story short, a trip to the ER followed by a bat-tery of tests over the course of several days culmi-nated with the insertion of a defibrillator. Upon doc-tor’s advice, Navas decided to hang up his boots for good but promised to be a familiar face around the clubhouse. As for the game, GW went down early to what was literally the only Hellenic shot on goal all afternoon. Keeper Manny Romero was caught in between bounces and the ball skipped on the wet grass off his hands and into the net. In the second half, Greg Healy chased down an Omer Hadzic through ball and snuck it into the net with a sweep-ing slide. Todd Schneider plunked the post with a header to be denied, again. Nick Paul*, pulling double duty by playing with the O30s on the club-house field before joining the O40 Teams’ effort, notched the game winner by heading home a Hadzic corner kick to give GW the 2-1 victory. OTHER NEWS

SAD NEWS. Manny Ruscheinski, brother of Hilde Kaempfer and a GW player from the 60s, passed away on October 18th.

HALL OF FAME. The ISSA recently announced that former Green White Soccer Club player, Robert Meschbach, will be inducted into the Illinois State Soccer Association Hall of Fame. Meschbach began his long soccer career in the 60’s as a member of the Green White Youth Division. He and his brother Richard were coached by their father on what back then was called the Midget Team. In the late 70’s and into the 80’s, he starred for the First Team and later returned in the 90’s and 00’s to play with the O30 Team. He was an All-American at Gordon Tech High School where he scored 105 goals in two seasons; 71 in his senior year, which stood as a national record for many years. Following high school, he had trials with Rapid Vienna in the Austrian Bundesliga and Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga but turned down contract offers in lieu of a scholarship at Indiana Uni-versity. At IU, he earned 1st Team All-American hon-ors in 1980, and was runner-up for the Hermann Award (the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy). He scored 61 total goals while at IU, leading the nation in

scoring with 27 goals in his senior year. Following college, he was a first round draft pick of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL where he won team Rookie of the Year honors; was voted NASL player of the week, and was considered one of the top Americans in the NASL. In 1984, he was traded to the Chicago Sting and helped his home town team to the 1984 NASL Championship. He went on to have equal suc-cess as a youth coach winning several state and national club champion-ships. Meschbach was very humbled by news of the induction and ac-knowledged that none of his soccer accomplishments would have been possible without Green White Soccer Club. Congratulations to Robert from all his friends at Green White.

ON THE COLLEGE FRONT. 1st Team coach Jake Truty and erstwhile Green White 1st Teamers Monroe Bell, Jr., Patryk Ruta and Gordy Gurson had an up and down October with the Robert Morris Men’s Soccer Team. The team saw

their NAIA national ranking reach as high as #12 in the nation, but three (3) conference losses saw them fall out of the top 25. On the positive side, their strength of schedule, despite the losses, upped their RPI rank-ing to #20 in the nation. The team finished the regular season with a record of 12-4-2; good enough for 4th in conference and entered the CCAC league tournament with an opening round match against Holy Cross (which they won in PKs). Along the way there were a few statis-tics of mention. Gordy Gurson finished the regular season as the league’s #2 scorer with 15 goals through 18 games. It was also noted that RMU, affectionately known as the UUUYY Thugs, appear to carry billy clubs on the pitch. League records show that while RMU falls in the middle of the pack in terms of the overall number of fouls commit-ted this season (243), they are well ahead of the curve with more yellow cards (35) and ejections (4) than any other team in the league. Which means that while they may not foul that often, when they do, they mean it. Said Sean Connor when learning of the stats, “Those aren’t just numbers, it’s a way of life.” On the women’s side, Kurt Melcher and Tom Czop have the RMU Lady Eagles flying high. The team finished the season with a record of 13-6; ranked just out side the top 25 in the nation (“received votes”), and entered the CCAC league tournament as the #3 seed.

Coming off their strong 1968 performance, Green White had high hopes for 1969. Manager Rudi Hrbacek's squad got off to a good start, making it all the way to the finals of the Illinois Amateur Cup. Unfortunately, with player of the year John Woolfe hospitalized, and two of their other stars (Szabo and Mavric) classified as "pros" (and therefore, ineligible to play in the Amateur Cup), Green White fell short once again. The Eagles won the Cup, 3-0.

But 1969 had a few memorable highlights, as well. Joe Laxgang (photo), a fixture on the team since the very beginning, played in his 500th game for Green White. Then, in August, Green White hosted a team from Germany; SC Reutlingen. Several members of the board took the Germans to Harry Kempf's "Treffpunkt" restaurant, and then escorted them to the Donauschwaben tournament to play Green White on the field. After a very close 2-1 Green White victory, SC Reutlingen gave special gifts to Green White members Peter Hehn, Josef Schuster, Matz Kraemer, Eckhard Kaempfer, and Martin Schneider to thank them for their hospitality. At the end of the regular season, Green White was in the middle of the pack of the Major Division.

Green White Youth. But while the men's team was scuffling a bit, the Green White youth team had a season for the ages; simply one of the most dominant seasons in Chicago soccer history. The goal differential for Green White's Junior Team was a sickening 200:4 in 26 games. They easily defeated the Liths 6-0 in the city champion-ship game. The star player of that team was Hansi Mayer, who scored an astounding 61 goals. Trainer Fritz Fernbach (photo) also took the boys to training camp that season in Genoa City. According to the Green White newsletter, the boys did some-thing better than excel at soccer there. They behaved well..."Our boys made a great impression--the people running the camp were very impressed by their good behav-ior, especially since the last few teams that came there from Milwaukee and Chicago (including, sadly, some our fellow German clubs) had to be sent home after one night for bad behavior. Our boys represented Green White with honor." Unfortunately, not all of the Green White youth were quite as upstanding. It appears that there was a bit of an issue at the New Years Eve party. The Green White newsletter reported the news this way: “Because the price was $10 for all you can eat or drink, a few of the youth members from the Donauschaben took a little advan-tage of the situation, if you know what I mean, and this caused some problems. We’ll have to be more careful in the future." Green White Off the Field. The women's club led by Julie Kaempf (Pres), Stella Polaretzki (VP), Martha Hrbacek (Sec), Maria Zimmer (Rec. Sec) and Maria Blaas (Treas) kept the club hopping. They had all sorts of events for the kids and the grown ups. In March they organized two outings; a bowling night, and a dinner at the Bismark Hotel followed by a Black-hawks game at the Stadium (against the Maple Leafs). In April they put on a special Western-themed dance, where all the good German cowboys and cowgirls dressed in traditional Wild West costumes. In July, they took all the kids to a Ladies Day game at Wrigley Field. (Little Ricky Kaempfer kept his scorecard that day. The Cubs beat the Pirates 7-5, and four future Hall of Famers homered; Stargell, Clemente, Williams, &

Santo). On July 26th, the same week Neil Armstrong took his one giant leap for mankind, the Green White ladies helped the men organize a big picnic/pig roast at Rock Lake.

But those activities paled in achievement to the collective accomplishment of four Miss Green Whites. Julie Hehn (1966), Ingrid Winterkorn (1967), Marianne Oswald (1968), and Annie Schuster (1969) formed a singing group called "Das Hei-matquartett". They released an album on IRC Records which got quite a bit of airplay on the German radio stations. IRC Records is the same record label that recorded Green White's house band (Die Goldene Drei), and some famous radio personalities in Chicago, including Dick Biondi ("The Pizza Song") and WGN's Franklyn MacCor-mack ("Why Do I Love You").

Green White Babies. The Gyurko (photo), Laxgang (Joe), Polaretzki, Jordan, Harjung, Franz, Scheer, and Kilian families all had baby girls in 1969. Helmut and Hilde Filian, Joe and Helene Schlenhardt, and Horst and Herta Melcher bucked the trend by having boys (Norbert, Tom & Kurt). In Pop Culture. The number one hit of the year was “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In” by The Fifth Dimension. The number one show on television was still "Rowan & Martin's: Laugh In." And the Academy Award winning film in 1969 was “Midnight Cowboy.” Elsewhere in 1969. Green White's own Nick Wirs returned from his tour of duty in Vietnam, but while he was gone, public opinion had changed. That summer 250,000 people marched on Washington to protest the war. The John Hancock Building was completed in Chicago. The Green White logo was changed to incorporate it. In August, the Woodstock Music Festival was held in upstate New York. Among the performers; Joan Baez, Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Sly & the Family Stone, The Who, Jef-ferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, The Band, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Jimi Hendrix. Charles Manson and his crazed followers went on a murder spree in California. Edward Kennedy was involved in the death of woman in what became known as the Chappaquiddick Affair. Two Iconic televi-sion shows debuted: "Sesame Street" and "Monty Python's Flying Circus."
