Treasure is a truly wonderful course in English literature designed for students of grade one to seven. The series presents a wide range of literature from many periods and genres.

The fresh approach that we have taken in this series should appeal to students as well as teachers who appreciate and enjoy good literature. The texts have been carefully selected from a rich kaleidoscope of literature and adapted and abridged whenever necessary. These texts have been categorized according to genres because evidently genre provides an important frame of reference which helps readers identify, interpret and enjoy the different texts with all their distinctive features, richness and variety.

As the students begin reading the texts, they can no more afford to remain passive readers. They are led to apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate and appreciate the texts through a variety of fun-filled and stimulating activities. They are constantly questioned and asked to respond. Students learn to evaluate and analyse literature, and in the process, they develop as independent thinkers who can form and express opinions with clarity.

Treasure is indeed a treasure trove of distilled knowledge and wisdom of the ages. It is here for the students to explore, examine, enjoy and extract whatever lessons and values they can from it.

Through this series, we have attempted to foster the culture of reading. We believe that well-read children of today will certainly go on to build a more civilized and informed society tomorrow.

Poetry A poem is just like a song. It usually has

lines that end in a rhyme. Poems are fun to read aloud.

Page 6: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-36

Poems are like songs and can be about anything. We find at least a person in the poem who speaks on. The person speaking in the poem may express his or her wonder; may tell a story; may describe something; may express particular feelings like anger, hatred, love, etc. We generally find lines ending with same sound in a poem. This is called rhyme.

Can you find the rhyming words in this poem?

The poet in the poem wonders about the animals. For humans we have our house to live. We stay in our house when the night comes. But where do animals go?

Here are some creatures that you will be reading about in the poem. Can you name them?

Let’s read this poem together and learn where different creatures go at night.

When All The World’s Asleep

Anita E. Posey

Page 7: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 7

Where do insects go at night,

When all the world’s asleep?

Where do bugs and butterflies

And caterpillars creep?

Turtles sleep inside their shells;

The robin has her nest.

Rabbits and the sly old fox

Have holes where they can rest.

Bears can crawl inside a cave;

The lion has its den.

Cows can sleep inside the barn,

And pigs can use their pen.

But where do bugs and butterflies

And caterpillars creep?

When everything is dark outside

And all the world’s asleep?

When All The World’s Asleep

Before you readDo you know what are words like asleep and creep called? Can you list 2 pairs of words which rhyme?

How beautiful is the rain!

After the dust and the heat,

In the broad and fiery street,

In the narrow lane,

How beautiful is the rain!

How it clatters along the roofs,

Like the tramp of hoofs,

How it gushes and struggles out

From the throat of the overflowing spout!

Across the window pane

It pours and pours;

And swift and wide,

With a muddy tide,

Like a river down the gutter roars

The rain, the welcome rain!

Silver FishesAnon

You can find dolphins in Nepal too. Some of them live in the Narayani River. Did you know that fish become cold in very cold water and warm in warm water? So they go to warmer places in winter.

Learn about fish

What is a fish?A fish is an animal which lives and breathes in water. All fish have backbone and most of them breathe through gills and scales. There are around 28, 000 different types of fish.

Are male and female fish different? In some species the males and females have different body shape and colour. In some, they do not have visible difference.

How do fish breathe?Fish do not have lungs and nose as we have. They use their gills to breathe. The gills take oxygen from water and leave the waste materials like carbon dioxide.

What do fish eat? The fish eat small insects, water plants, fish and their eggs. If the fish are big enough, they eat sea birds, frogs, snakes and mice, etc.

Who eats fish? Worms, humans, birds, other fish and wild cats!In this poem, the poet describes the beauty of the silver fish and wonders where they go during winter. The poet says he or she can see the silver fish in the water. They are shining in the bright cool water. They dance in summer days. But the poet does not know where they go during winter.

There was once rather a vain cow. She was plain white with two nice curly horns. She thought she looked rather nice – but she did wish she could have some nice black spots over her back. There were no spotted cows in the field at all, and the white cow thought it would be grand to be the only spotted cow.

Now one day, when she was munching the long, juicy grass that grew in the hedge, she came across a small pixie mixing black paint in a pot.

‘What are you doing?’ asked the cow.

‘I’m mixing my black paint,’ said the little fellow. ‘I’m the pixie that paints the spots on the ladybirds, you know.’

‘Oh,’ said the cow. ‘Well, will you paint some on me?’

‘Yes, if you give me a nice drink of milk,’ said the pixie.

In a long line stood about twenty ladybirds with bright red backs and no spots. The pixie neatly painted seven black spots on each red back, and the ladybirds flew off in delight.

‘I don’t mind doing that,’ said the cow. ‘You can find a tin mug and milk some of my creamy milk into it for yourself.’

‘I’ll just finish these ladybirds first,’ said the pixie, and he turned back

to his work. In a long line stood about twenty ladybirds with bright red backs and no spots. The pixie neatly

painted seven black spots on each red back, and the ladybirds flew off happily.

When he had finished his work he looked at the waiting cow. ‘I’ll go and find my mug,’ he

said. ‘I’m very thirsty and I’d love a drink of your nice milk.’

He ran off and came back with a mug. On it was his name: ‘Pixie Pinnie’. He milked the cow, and took a

mugful of her creamy milk. Then he began to mix some more black paint.

‘Are you sure you’d like black spots?’ he asked. ‘You wouldn’t like a few blue ones, or red ones? You would look most uncommon then.’

The cow thought about it. ‘No,’ she said at last. ‘I don’t think so. I’d rather have black spots. They will look smarter than coloured ones.’

‘Well you must stand still,’ said the pixie, ‘or I might smudge the spots, and that would look horrid. Now then, are you ready?’

The pixie began to paint the cow. Goodness, you should have seen him! A big black spot here, and a little one there! Two by her tail, and three down her back. Four in a ring on her nose, and a whole crowd of spots down her sides. She did look grand!

At last the pixie had finished. He put away his paints, took another drink of milk, and said ‘Good-bye.’ The cow left him and went back to the field. How grand she felt!

The other cows stared at her. They didn’t know her. Who was this funny spotted cow?

‘Don’t you know me?’ said the cow, proudly. ‘I’ve grown spots.’

Page 33: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 33

‘Rubbish!’ said the biggest cow. ‘Grown spots, indeed! You don’t belong to us. Go away, you horrid, spotted creature. We don’t want anything to do with you!’

Just then the little boy who looked after the cows came along to see if they were all right. When he saw the spotted cow, he stared in surprise. ‘You’re not one of our cows,’ he said. ‘You must have wandered in here from somewhere else. Get out of the field and go back to your own meadow, wherever it is! What an ugly, spotted creature you are! I’m glad you are not one of our cows!’

He opened the gate and pushed the surprised cow out. She trotted down the lane angrily. ‘I’ll go to the next field,’ she thought. ‘The cows there will be pleased to have such a fine spotted creature as I am!’

But they weren’t pleased! They mooed at her and sent her away. She was very miserable. ‘I wish I hadn’t got spots now,’ she thought to herself. ‘It was a mistake. I’ll find the pixie and ask him to take them away.’

But the pixie was gone. She couldn’t see him anywhere. Then it began to rain. The cow stood under a tree to shelter herself, but the rain was so heavy that she was soon wet from horn to tail – and dear me, the black spots all came out in the rain! Soon, there were none left at all.

The cow didn’t know that the rain had washed the black spots away. She stood there, feeling lonely and miserable. When the rain had stopped, she made up her mind to go back to her own field and ask the other cows to have her back again. So off she went, whisking her big tail from side to side.

The little boy was still there. He saw her as she came, and now she had no spots, he knew her for one of his own cows. So he opened the gate,

and let her through, saying: ‘Dear me, where have you been?’

The other cows crowded round her. Now that she had no spots, they knew her too.

‘We are glad to see you,’ they said. ‘Do you know a horrible spotted cow came in your place, and said she was you? She’s gone now, thank goodness. Ugly creature that she was! How dared she say she was you, for you are so white and pretty!’

The cow didn’t say anything. She listened and hung her head. It was better to be white and pretty than to

be handsome and spotted. She didn’t look so grand now, but she was herself.

‘I hope that the pixie doesn’t tell the cows about what had happened,’ she thought. ‘The cows will laugh at me if he does!’

But I don’t expect he will!

Once a little mouse who lived in the country invited a little mouse from the city to visit him. When the little City Mouse sat down to dinner he was surprised to find that the Country Mouse had nothing to eat except grains of maize and rice.

“Really,” he said, “you do not live well at all; you should see how I live! I have all sorts of fine things to eat every day. You must come to visit me and see how nice it is to live in the city.” The little Country Mouse was glad to do this, and after a while he went to the city to visit his friend. The very first place that the City Mouse took the Country Mouse to see was the kitchen cupboard of the house where he lived. There, on the lowest shelf, behind some jars, stood a big paper bag of sugar. The little City Mouse gnawed a hole in the bag and invited his friend to nibble for himself.

The two little mice nibbled and nibbled, and the Country Mouse thought he had never tasted anything so delicious in his life. He was just thinking how lucky the City Mouse was, when suddenly the door opened with a bang, and in came the cook to get some flour. “Run!” whispered the City Mouse. And they ran as fast as they could to the little hole where they had come in. The little Country Mouse was shaking all over when they got safely away, but

The City Mouse And The Country Mouse

Page 40: Green Treasure

the little City Mouse said, “That is nothing; she will soon go away and then we can go back.”

After the cook had gone away and shut the door they were softly back, and this time the City Mouse had something new to show.He took the little Country Mouse into a corner on the top shelf, where a big jar of dried biscuits stood open. After much tugging and pulling they got a large dried biscuit out of the jar on to the shelf and began to munch it. This was even better than the sugar. The little Country Mouse liked the taste so much that he could hardly nibble fast enough. But all at once, in the midst of their eating, there came a scratching at the door and a sharp, loud MIAOUW! “What is that?” said the Country Mouse. The City Mouse just whispered, “Shh!” and ran as fast as he could to the hole.

The Country Mouse ran after, you may be sure, as fast as he could. As soon as they were out of danger the City Mouse said, “That was the old Cat. She is the best mouser in town - if she once gets you, you are lost.”

“This is very terrible,” said the little Country Mouse, “let us not go back to the cupboard again.” “No,” said the City Mouse, “I will take you to the cellar. There is something special there.”

So the City Mouse took his little friend down the

cellar stairs and into a big cupboard where there

were many shelves. On the shelves were

jars of butter and cheeses. There was

lots of food stored in the

cellar. It smelled so good that it

Page 41: Green Treasure

went to the little Country Mouse’s head. He ran along the shelf and nibbled at a cheese here, and a bit of butter there, until he saw a very delicious-smelling piece of cheese on a queer little stand in a corner. He was just on the point of biting at it when the City Mouse saw him.

“Stop! Stop!” cried the City Mouse. “That is a trap!”

The little Country Mouse stopped and said, “What is a trap?”

“That thing is a trap,” said the little City Mouse. ”The minute you touch the cheese with your teeth, something comes down on your head hard, and you’re dead.”

The little Country Mouse looked at the trap, and he looked at the cheese, and he looked at the little City Mouse. ”If you’ll excuse me,” he said, “I think I will go home. I’d rather have barley and grains to eat and eat it in peace and comfort than have sugar and dried biscuits and cheese, and be frightened to death all the time!”

So the little Country Mouse went back to his home, and there he stayed all the rest of his life.

One morning Winnie-the-Pooh was on his way to visit his friend Piglet. Although Pooh’s head was stuffed with fluff, he was a cheerful fellow. As he walked along through the woods, he was humming a song to himself.

Pooh did not look where he was going. All of a sudden someone bounced into him. Pooh found himself flat on the ground. Tigger was sitting on his tummy.

“Hello, Pooh,” said Tigger. “It’s a fine day for bouncing.” Tigger helped Pooh get up.

“Thank you, Tigger,” said Pooh. “I was just thinking it’s a fine day for going to visit Piglet.”

“I was on my way to see Rabbit,” said Tigger. “But I will come along with you.” And Tigger bounced away.

Tigger bounced on ahead of Pooh. He bounced so fast, and he bounced so far that he bounced right into Piglet.

“Tigger,” cried Piglet. “You scared me.”

“I’m sorry,” said Tigger. “Now I’m off to see Rabbit. Why don’t you and Pooh come with me?” Away he bounced again.

Tigger bounced into Rabbit’s garden. Rabbit was busy counting his carrots. Suddenly Tigger bounced on top of him.

“Hello there, Rabbit,” said Tigger.

“Tigger, you are a pest!” cried Rabbit.

Winnie-the-Pooh And Tigger

When Pooh and Piglet reached the garden, they helped Rabbit to his feet. Rabbit was very angry at Tigger.

“Why are you always so bouncy?” he cried.

“Bouncing is what I do best!” Tigger said, and he began to sing:

“The wonderful thing about Tiggers is-

Tiggers are wonderful things.

Their tops are made of rubber.

Their tails are made of springs.

They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy.

Full of fun, fun, fun!

The most wonderful thing about Tiggers is-

I’m the only one!”

By the time Tigger bounced away, Rabbit’s whole garden was ruined.

Later that day, Rabbit came up with a splendid idea for unbouncingTigger. He told Pooh and Piglet about it.

“We will take him on a long trip, and leave him in the woods,” said Rabbit. “When we go back to get him next morning, Tigger will not be so bouncy.”

“That is a splendid idea,” said Pooh excitedly.

Page 49: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 49

The very next day Rabbit, Pooh and Piglet took Tigger into the woods. Tigger bounced farther and farther away. He did not know about Rabbit’s idea to leave him in the woods.

The three friends found a hollow log.

“Quick!” said Rabbit. “Hide inside!”

They climbed into the log. Tigger soon came back to look for them.

“Hello-o-o.” he called.

No one answered. Tigger stood on top of the log. He called his friends again. They still did not answer.

“They must be lost,” thought Tigger. And he bounced away to find them.

As soon as Tigger was out of sight, Rabbit, Pooh and Piglet started to walk back home. After a while, they came to a sandpit.

“Something is wrong,” said Piglet. “I am sure we passed by here before.”

“Nonsense,” said Rabbit. “Keep walking.”

Soon they came to the sandpit again.

“I believe we are lost,” said Pooh.

“I’m sure I know the way,” said Rabbit. “You two wait here and I’ll find it.”

Pooh and Piglet waited for Rabbit. They waited and waited and waited. But Rabbit did not come back. At last Pooh took Piglet’s hand.

“Let’s follow my tummy,” said Pooh. “Whenever I get hungry for honey, my tummy leads me home.”

Sure enough, Pooh’s tummy found the way. Just as they came out of the woods, Tigger bounced into them.

Page 50: Green Treasure

“Oh, Tigger,” said Pooh. “Rabbit is lost in the woods.”

“Tiggers never get lost,” said Tigger. “I’ll go back to find him.”

He bounced away.

Meanwhile, Rabbit was all alone in the darkest part of the woods. He was very, very lost. Every time he looked around, he thought he saw someone watching him. He heard all sorts of scary sounds: Peck, peck! Croak! Hoot! Then he heard someone creeping in the bushes. Hiss-s-s-s!

“Help, Pooh! Help, Piglet!” he shouted.

Suddenly he was bounced to the ground.

“Tigger! I’m so glad to see you!”

Tigger led Rabbit out of the woods.

Poor Rabbit! His splendid idea for unbouncingTigger had not worked very well.

Once a upon a time there was a merchant. One fine day he was getting ready to go to the market. He asked his three daughters what they wanted him to bring back for them. The first and the second daughter asked for new dresses. The third daughter, Beauty, said, “All I’d like is a rose that you have picked specially for me.”

Later on the day, the merchant could not come home because of a big storm. He was tired and lost. He came across an old castle and went inside it to rest. He called out to see if anyone lived in the castle, “Anyone here? Does anyone live here?” But no one answered him. He went inside and found a bed. He lay on the bed and soon fell fast asleep.

The next morning when he woke up, there was hot tea and fruit for him to eat. He had thought no one lived in the castle but he was wrong. He called out again but once again no one answered him. He was about to go back home when in the garden he saw beautiful roses. He remembered the promise he made to Beauty and picked a rose. Suddenly a horrible big beast jumped out of the rose bushes!

“You come into my castle, you sleep in my bed and you eat my food, and now you are going to steal my favorite flower!” shouted the beast. The merchant was terrified.

Beauty and the Beast

Page 58: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-358

He told the beast he was very sorry and how he was taking a rose to his daughter, Beauty.

“I will not hurt you if you promise to bring your daughter to me!” said the beast. The merchant was terrified and he promised the beast he would. The merchant went home and in tears told his daughters the story of the beast. Beauty told her father not to be sad and not to worry. “I will do anything for you, father. Take me to the beast’s castle.” So the merchant took her to the beast.

The beast was very kind to Beauty. He gave her one of the best rooms in the castle. At first Beauty was scared of the beast but after some time, she became friends with him.

Even though Beauty was friend with the beast, she missed her family very much. So the beast gave her a magic mirror in which she could see her family. When she looked into the mirror she was sad. She saw that her father was very ill. Beauty wanted to go and take care of her father very much.

The beast told her, “If you promise to come back in seven days I will let you go see your father.”

“Oh, thank you! You are so kind. I promise I will come back in seven days,” said Beauty.

When Beauty got home she found out that her father was ill because he missed her. She took care of her father and soon he was well again. She did not know that seven days had already passed.

One night she had a dream. In her dream the beast was dying because he could not live without her. She remembered her promise to the beast, so she quickly went back to him. When she got to the castle she could not find the beast anywhere. She ran into the garden, and near the rose bushes she found the beast lying on the ground. The beast was very ill and was dying, just like she had seen in her dream.

Page 59: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 59

“Please don’t die! Please don’t die!” she cried. The beast, who thought it was his end, softly told her that he loved her. He also said that he knew she could never love an ugly beast.

Beauty had a heart of gold, she did not love people for the way they looked. She told him that she loved him too. When she said that, something wonderful and magical happened. The beast suddenly turned into a handsome man! He then told Beauty that a witch had put a curse on him. The only thing that could break the curse was the love of a girl who would love him for who he was and not for what he looked like.

He asked Beauty to marry him. They soon got married and lived happily ever after.

“Beauty and the Beast” is a simple and easy story. In this story, Beauty is the heroine. The hero is the Beast. This story took place ‘once upon a time’. It happened in the land where magic could work.

The story begins when the merchant asked his daughters what they wanted. Among his three daughters, the youngest one, who was the most beautiful, asked him to bring a flower as a gift. Because of the storm, he could not come home that day. He took shelter in a house where no human lived but a Beast. The Beast gave food and shelter to the merchant but the Beast did not show himself to the merchant until he plucked the flower for his daughter the next morning. Then the Beast threatened the merchant that either the Beast would harm him or he would take his daughter.

Page 60: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-360

The merchant went home feeling very sad. Beauty came to live with the Beast. Day by day they became friends and started falling in love with each other. On the other hand, Beauty’s father fell sick because he had left his daughter with the Beast. So, Beauty went to see her father with the permission of the Beast. She delayed to come back. When she remembered the Beast and came to his castle, she found him very sick. The Beast was crying. Beauty asked why he was crying. Then he told Beauty that he was crying because she did not like him. Then Beauty told him that she loved him. Then the Beast changed into a handsome man. Then they got married and lived happily ever after.

This story tells us that love and kindness can change even the beast to a good person. So we should love people and we should be kind to all.

Simpleton was kind and he gave the dwarf some food. The dwarf was very thankful, so he told Simpleton a secret. “I will tell you a secret. Go to the big old tree near the river and chop it in half. Inside, you will find something that will make you rich.”

Simpleton did as he was told. When he chopped down the old tree, inside it was a goose with golden feathers! Simpleton did not want to go back home to his

unkind brothers, so he went and stayed at a rest house. He paid the rest house owner with a golden feather.

The rest house owner had three daughters. They saw the golden

goose and all three decided they would steal the goose when Simpleton fell asleep.

At night, one by one the three daughters came to steal the

goose but a funny thing happened. When they touched the goose, they got stuck to it!

When Simpleton woke up, he took the goose and went on his way. He did not seem to notice the three daughters stuck to the goose. The three daughters went falling behind wherever the goose and Simpleton went. Everyone who saw them wanted to know what was going on. But when they touched the girls, they got stuck too! So Simpleton was walking around with the three daughters, a farmer, a miller and a woodcutter stuck together! It was a very strange but funny sight to see.

After some time, Simpleton with all his followers came across a castle full of people. He saw a lot of people gathered there. He asked them what was going on. “They are trying to make the princess laugh,” said one man. “She has not laughed in five years. The king has promised to give her to the man that can make her laugh.”

“Father, this is useless. None of these men are funny, I am tired of standing here waiting to laugh,” said the princess to the king. Just then she saw Simpleton turning around in the crowd with all those people stuck to his goose. They were all bumping into each other and making others fall. Seeing this, the princess suddenly started laughing. She laughed and laughed!

The king could not believe his eyes and ears! His daughter was laughing again! The king asked Simpleton to come forward to meet him.

All the people who were stuck to the goose were pulling hard to get free. They pulled so hard that suddenly they all came off the goose and went falling on top of one another! The princess saw this and laughed even more!

The king was not too happy because Simpleton was not a prince. But he had made his daughter laugh. The princess fell in love with Simpleton. Simpleton told the king he would be as rich as a prince because he had a golden goose. The king thought about it and said that was true.

Simpleton and the princess had a beautiful wedding. The dwarf was invited too. Simpleton bought a castle with the golden feathers of the goose. They lived happily ever after without anyone stuck to the goose!

Far out in the sea, where the water is blue and as clear as crystal, it is very, very deep. It is so deep that nothing reaches the ground below. There, in that part of the sea, lived the Sea King and his six beautiful daughters. The youngest one was the most beautiful of all. Her eyes were as blue as the deepest sea but like all the others she had no feet, her body ended in a fish tail.

She was a strange child. Unlike her sisters who loved all the wonderful things of the sea, she always wanted to hear about the world above the sea.“When you are fifteen,” said her grandmother, “you will have permission to go up the sea.”

“I know I would love the world up there and the people who live in it,” thought the little mermaid. At last, her fifteenth birthday came. She could finally go and see what was above the seas!

The sun had just set, the sea was calm, the air was fresh. A ship was sailing and the sailors were out on the ship. There was music and song on the ship. The little mermaid swam closer to the ship windows. She saw nicely dressed people but the most beautiful of all

was the handsome young prince. Soon a storm started to shake the sea. The waves were mountain high. The ship jumped from one wave to another. To the little

mermaid this looked like fun. But the sailors were shouting for help.

The little mermaid felt they were in danger,

so she went to help. Suddenly she saw

the prince sink deep into the sea. She was glad, she

thought he would now be with her. But then she remembered that humans cannot live under water! He was in great danger. She swam down into the sea, and brought him out. The littlemermaid put him safely on a big rock. Then she went back into the sea before any human being could see her.

Many days passed and she did not see her beautiful prince. The little mermaid felt sad. She wanted to be human, and have legs, so she could go and see her prince. But she knew it was not possible because mermaids have no legs. So she went to the sea witch who knew magic. The little mermaid went to see the witch without telling anyone. When she arrived at the witch’s cave, the witch said, “I know what you want, it is very stupid of you. I will help you but it will bring you great unhappiness, my pretty princess. You want to get rid of your fish tail so you can have two silly human legs?” The witch laughed in an evil way.

The witch gave the little mermaid a magic potion. “Don’t drink it here,” said the witch.” Go near the land and drink it there. Your tail will turn into human legs. But you will feel great pain like a thousand knives stabbing your legs. You will still be able to dance as beautifully as a mermaid even on land.”The little mermaid felt a little scared but she loved the prince so much that she decided to take the pain. So she went near the land and drank the magic potion and got her legs! Then she searched for the prince and finally found him. But when she tried to talk she could not, she had no voice!

The prince looked at this beautiful girl whose mouth was moving but no sound came out of it. Nearby, there was a musician playing an accordion. So the little mermaid began to dance. The prince was enchanted by her. But her legs began to hurt, the witch was right. They hurt so much that she fell. But the prince picked her up and kissed her. Suddenly her legs stopped hurting and her voice came back! She told the prince she was a mermaid, and how she had saved him once.

The prince fell in love with the little mermaid. He asked her to marry him and she agreed. They had a beautiful wedding on a ship in the sea.

“The Little Mermaid” is the story of a mermaid who always wanted to know about the world out of the sea. She was the youngest of the six daughters of the sea king. She saw a prince when she came to the surface of the water for the first time and saved him. She fell in love with him. So she wanted to go and see the prince but they live in two different world. Little Red Riding Hood

This is the story of a little girl, her grandma and a big bad wolf. The little girl lived in a little white house. The house was in a village and the village was near a forest. She was a good little girl. Her mother and father loved her very much. Her grandma loved her very much, too.

The little girl’s grandma lived in a very old house in the middle of the forest. The little girl often went to her grandma’s house.

One Christmas, Grandma gave the little girl a beautiful red cloak with a hood.“Oh, thank you!” said the little girl.

She wore the cloak all day on Christmas Day, and the next day too. She wore it all the time, so

people gave her a new name. They called her “Little Red Riding Hood”.

One day her mother said, “Little Red Riding Hood, your grandma is ill. Go to her house and take her

this basket of bread and butter. Walk

About the storyIt is a tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf. The girl walks through the woods to deliver food to her sickly grandmother. The Wolf wants to eat the girl and the food in the basket. He secretly stalks her behind trees, bushes, shrubs, and patches of little and tall grass. Let us see how she escapes the wolf.

quickly to her house. Don’t stop and play. And don’t leave the road. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Mother,” said Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood took the basket and ran into the forest.

She walked very quickly. She did not stop and play. But soon after, she saw a wolf.

“Hello,” said the wolf. “How are you today?”

“I’m very well, thank you,” she answered. “But my grandma is ill. I’m taking this basket of bread and butter to her.”

“Are you?” said the wolf. “That’s interesting!”

The wolf was very hungry. He looked at Little Red Riding Hood with his big hungry eyes.

“Where does your grandma live?” he asked.

“She lives in a little old house in the middle of the forest,” said Little Red Riding Hood.

“Is it far?”

“No. It’s very near from here.”

“Mmm,” thought the wolf. “Perhaps I can eat this little girl and her grandma.”

“Look over there!” said the wolf. “Can you see those nice flowers? Does your grandma like flowers? You can go and get some for her.”

“Oh no, I can’t,” said Little Red Riding Hood. “I can’t leave the road.”

Page 80: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-380

“But you can come back to the road later,” said the wolf.

“Yes… that’s true,” said Little Red Riding Hood slowly. “I can. Oh, all right!”

So she walked through the trees to the flowers.

Now the bad wolf ran quickly towards Grandma’s house.

He went to the door and knocked.

“Who is it?” called Little Red Riding Hood’s grandma.

“It’s me, Grandma!” the wolf answered. “It’s Little Red Riding Hood!”

“Open the door and come in, dear.”

“Where are you, Grandma?” called the wolf.

“I’m upstairs in bed, dear. I am ill today and I can’t get up.”

“I’ve got some nice bread and butter for you,” called the wolf.

He went up the stairs and ran into Grandma’s bedroom. Then he jumped onto the bed and opened his big mouth and ate her!

The wolf put on one of Grandma’s nightdresses, and got into her bed and waited. He waited for Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood got lots of beautiful flowers in the forest.

Then suddenly she remembered her Grandma.

“Oh dear!” she said. “I’m going to be late!”

She ran back to the road, and soon she came to her Grandma’s house. She stopped when she saw the open door.

“That’s strange,” thought Little Red Riding Hood. “Why is Grandma’s door open?” And she went in.

The wolf heard Little Red Riding Hood.

“Who is it?” he called.

Page 81: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 81

“It’s me, Grandma! It’s Little Red Riding Hood.”

“I’m upstairs in bed, dear,” called the wolf. “I am ill today and I can’t get up.”

So Little Red Riding Hood went up the stairs.

“Grandma’s voice is very strange today!” she thought. “It’s because she is ill.”

Little Red Riding Hood went into the bedroom.

“Hello, Grandma,” she said. “I am sorry you are ill today. Look! I’ve got some nice bread and butter for you. And some beautiful flowers!”

“Thank you, dear,” said the wolf. “Come closer to me, dear.”

So Little Red Riding Hood went to the bed.

“Oh, Grandma,” she said, “you look very strange today!”

And suddenly she was afraid.

“Oh, Grandma,” said Little Red Riding Hood, “you’ve got very big eyes today!”

“That’s because I want to see you, my dear,” said the wolf.

“Oh, Grandma,” said Little Red Riding Hood, “you’ve got very big ears today!”

Page 82: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-382

“That’s because I want to hear you, my dear,” said the wolf.

“Oh, Grandma, you’ve got very big nose today!”

“That’s because I want to smell those beautiful flowers, my dear.”

“Oh, Grandma,” said Little Red Riding Hood, “you’ve got a very big mouth today, and a lot of very big teeth!”

“Yes, my dear,” said the wolf. “And that’s because I want to eat you!”

And the wolf jumped out of the bed and ate Little Red Riding Hood.

Now the wolf was big and fat and he wanted to go to sleep. He took off Grandma’s nightdress and put it on the floor.

Then he got back into bed and went to sleep. Soon he began to snore loudly.

“Zhhhh,” he snored. “Zhhhhh!”

Soon after, Little Red Riding Hood’s father came to the

house. He saw the open door.

“That’s strange,” he thought. “Why is the door open? And what’s that noise?”

“Zhhhhhh,” the wolf snored. “Zhhhhhhh!”

“Grandma’s voice is very strange today,” thought Little Red Riding Hood’s father.

He went upstairs to Grandma’s bedroom. He

Page 83: Green Treasure

looked at the bed and saw the wolf.

“It’s you!” he said. He knew about the wolf. All the men in the village wanted to find it and kill it.

“What are you doing in Grandma’s bed? Well, you can’t run away now.”

And he took his knife and killed the wolf.

Then he thought, “Perhaps Grandma is alive!”

So Little Red Riding Hood’s father took his knife and cut open the wolf. And Little Red Riding Hood jumped out.

“Oh, Father! Quick! Help Grandma,” she said. “She’s in there, in the dark!”

Then Grandma jumped out.

“Oh! Oh! Where’s that bad wolf?” she said.

“Everything’s all right now,” said Little Red Riding Hood’s father. “The wolf is dead.”

So Grandma had a cup of tea and some nice bread and butter.

Then Little Red Riding Hood and her father went home to their little white house. Little Red Riding Hood ran to her mother and told her everything.

“But it’s all right now!” she said.

“Yes,” said her father. “But Little Red Riding Hood, do not talk to wolves again. And do not leave the road when you go through the forest. Do you understand?”

“Yes, mother.”

After that, Little Red Riding Hood always stayed on the road. And she never saw a wolf again.

Puss In Boots

Once upon a time, there lived a miller who had three sons. After he died, his things were given to his sons. The two older sons got a house each and the youngest son only got a cat. The youngest son was sad because his brothers got a house to live in and he only got a cat. The cat saw that his master was sad.

“Don’t worry, master,” said the cat. “Give me a bag and a pair of boots. I will make you happy soon.”

The son gave the cat a bag and a pair of boots. The cat carried the bag and put the shoes on. He called himself “Puss in Boots”.Puss in Boots went to the forest and caught rabbits in the bag. Then he went to meet the king. Puss in Boots gave the bag full of rabbits to the king and said, “I brought you rabbits from the land of my Master of Carabas.”

The king was happy and said, “Thank your master for bringing the rabbits.”

Next day, Puss in Boots asked his master to take a bath in the river. The master did as the cat had said.

While he was taking a bath, the king passed by in his carriage with his daughter. Puss in Boots jumped in front of the carriage and said,

The Ogre wanted to show his magical powers and changed

himself into a lion. Puss in Boots was afraid at first. But

again he said, “I also heard you can change yourself into a small animal like a mouse. But I don’t believe that.” The Ogre turned into a mouse. This was the moment Puss in Boots was waiting for. As soon as the Ogre turned into a little mouse, Puss in Boots ate it.

Fables and Folktales Fables and folktales are stories. People all

over the world tell fables and folktales.

Many fables and folktales are very old. People tell these stories over and over again.

Many fables and folktales have animals in them. The animals talk to one another. They may also talk to people.

A fable teaches a lesson. The story can show how to make good choices. It may show what a person should do.

A folktale may not teach a lesson. But it is interesting to read or to hear it from your parents and grandparents.

Have you read or heard any fables or folktales?

Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky

The Sun lived together with the Moon in a warm, cheery house. The house was painted yellow, pink and gold. Light danced all around it.

The Water’s house was much larger than the Sun’s. It was painted blue, green and violet. A gentle wind blew all around the house and it was very peaceful.

The Sun often went to the Water’s house, but the Water never visited the Sun. One day the Sun asked the Water why he never visited. The Water said, “I would like to visit you, but your house is not big enough for me and all my family. If you built a very large new house, my family and I will be very happy to visit you.”

The Sun thought this was a wonderful idea. He and the Moon immediately began to build a new house. After a week, the house was finished. It was so big that it stretched as far as the eye could see. The next day, the Sun and the Moon invited the Water to come for a party.

“May I come in?” the Water asked when he arrived.

“Of course, dear friend,” answered the Sun and

the Moon.

Page 93: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 93

So the Water and all the members of his family began to come through the door. Tiny fish, crabs, snails and huge whales poured into the Sun’s house.

Soon, the water was knee-deep. “Shall we keep coming in?” the Water asked the Sun. “Of course!” the Sun answered. “The party is just beginning!” So more water entered the house. Now it poured through the windows as well as the doors.

Soon, the water was high enough to cover a person’s head. Again the Water asked the Sun if he and his family could keep coming in. “Of course!” the Sun said again.

Finally, there was so much water in the house that the Sun and the Moon had to sit on the roof. “Should we keep coming in?” the Water asked. The Sun and the Moon were having too much fun to say no. More water and more sea creatures poured into the house until it was completely full. The Sun and the Moon had to go up in the sky and that is where they have lived ever since.

Two friends were walking along in a forest. As they were walking in the forest, they felt as if something was following them. It was not a dangerous forest but they kept hearing strange rustling noises in the bushes.

Suddenly, a big wild black bear sprang out of the bushes! The two friends ran for their lives. They saw a big tree and began to climb it. The first friend was a good climber and quickly climbed it. The second friend was not as fast. He could only climb halfway.

He shouted, “I cannot climb further!”

But the first friend did not seem to care; he just kept climbing higher. “I am safe here,” he thought to himself and just stayed quietly on the top.The second friend was very scared. He did not know what to do. The branch he was standing on began to break. He shouted to his friend, “Please help me up!” But the first friend did not move from his place. The branch broke and the second friend fell to the ground.

The bear was coming closer! The second friend thought his end was near. Just then he remembered something his grandfather had told him! Bears do not eat anything that is already dead. So, he decided to pretend dead.

The bear came very close to him and it sniffed him here and there, especially near the ears. The boy lay there very still because he knew he would be eaten if he moved. He could feel the bear breathing heavily on him but all he could do was keep his eyes tightly shut and remain very still.

After about five minutes, the bear lost interest and decided the boy was already dead. So the bear lumbered back into the bushes and the two boys heard the rustling of the bushes. Except this time, the sound of the leaves became quieter which meant the bear was moving away from them.

The first friend, seeing the bear leave, finally came down. He had observed while up in the safety of his tree that the bear had sniffed near his friend’s ear. It looked as if the bear had told his friend something important. So he asked his friend, “What did the bear whisper into your ear?” The second friend said, “The bear told me that a true friend never leaves friends behind for bears to eat them.”The second friend continued to say, “The bear also said to me not to be friends with such people who do not help others in times of need. He said that anyone can be your friend when everything is well but only true friends stay with you when things get bad.”

The second friend then went on his way leaving the first friend behind.

The four friends ate the food that the robbers had left behind. Then they settled down for a good night’s sleep. The donkey lay down on some straw in the front yard. The hound dog slept by the front door. The cat dozed off in front of the fireplace. And the rooster perched on a beam of the roof. Soon they were fast asleep.

After midnight, the leader of the robbers sent a man to check the house. If it was safe, they would go back to get their gold. When the man peeked in, he didn’t see the animals in the dark. Feeling braver, he went in through the front door. He saw the old cat’s eyes shining in the darkness. Thinking it was a monster, he ran screaming from the house. As he ran out of the house, he stepped

on the dog, who bit him in the leg. As he ran across the yard,

the donkey kicked him in the back. The man’s screams woke up the rooster, who started to crow.

When the man got back to the forest, he told the

robbers how horrible it had been. “A monster with eyes of fire lives in that building.

On their way home, Ulysses and his men landed their ship on another island. Ulysses divided his men into two groups. The group led by Eurylochus (say You-ril-o-kus) went in search of food and water while Ulysses and the rest of the men guarded the ship. Even after walking for hours, Eurylochus and his men could not find anything to eat or drink. Finally, they saw a palace where a beautiful woman named Circe (say Sir-see) lived. She invited the men for a feast. They ate and drank and sang a lot.

But Eurylochus was suspicious and he did not eat anything. He went out unnoticed. He did not trust Circe, so he was spying from outside. He saw Circe turn all his men into pigs with one wave of her magic wand. It made him gasp in horror. He went back to the ship and told the others what he had seen. Ulysses set off to rescue his friends. On his way, he met Hermes (say Her-meez) who was the messenger of goddess Athene (say A-thee-nee). Hermes gave Ulysses a magical

flower, which would protect him from Circe’s tricks.

When Ulysses reached the palace, Circe could not trap

the top of a leaning tower. He had two metal balls. They were the same size. One was heavy, and one was light. Galileo dropped the two balls at the same time. They landed at the same time. Galileo saw for himself that objects fall at the same speed.

Galileo also wanted to learn about the planets and the Sun. He heard about something called a spy glass. Galileo had never seen the spy glass. Still, he was able to make his own. Galileo's spy glass was better than any other spy glass of the time. Today we call the spyglass a telescope.

People in Galileo’s time though that the Moon was smooth. Galileo used his telescope to look at the Moon. He saw that the Moon was rough. It had big mountains, too. He learned new facts about the Moon.

Galileo used his telescope to look at the planet Jupiter. He saw spots on the planet. He saw that those spots were moving. Galileo realized that the spots were Moon. People in Galilee's time thought that only Earth had a Moon. Galileo looked for himself. He saw that Jupiter had moons, too. Then Galileo used his telescope to look at the planet Venus. He saw that Venus had phases, just like the phases of the Moon. This meant that Venus revolved around the Sun.

People in Galileo’s time believed that the Sun and the other planets revolved around the Earth. Galileo came across the work of Copernicus. Copernicus was an astronomer. He claimed that the Sun was the center of the planet. This new idea made Galileo more curious. He began to research and study about the planets. He found that Earth is not the center of the solar system. The Sun is the center.

Galileo used his telescope to study the Sun, too. At first he looked right at the Sun. This hurt his eyes.

Galileo found a new way to study the Sun. He pointed the telescope at the Sun. He let the picture of the Sunshine on to a piece of paper. In this way, Galilee saw sunspots. He made careful drawings of the sun spots. He learned that the Sun was spinning.

Galilee wanted to see things for himself. Many people of his time did not like what he saw. They could not believe him. However, now we know that Galilee was right. He helped people understand the solar system.

Imagine this scene: The telephone rings. You answer it. The call is for your mom, but she’s out. You grab a pencil from the plastic pencil holder. You write the message on a piece of paper. After you leave the note on the desk, you zip up your jacket and head out the door.

The telephone is one of the most popular inventions ever made.

Inventions are all around us.

Maybe that scene once happened to you. Did you stop to think about all of the gadgets you used? The telephone? The zipper? Those things are inventions. We use many inventions every day. Let’s find out about some. Their stories may surprise you. Often it took someone many tries before they came up with the inventions we use today.

Plastic Plastic is over one hundred years old. An English scientist cut himself. He looked in his medicine cabinet for something to stop the bleeding. He saw a tough, rubbery substance there. He had an idea. He worked on the materials in his laboratory. Soon he had created a new material that we know today as plastic. Over the years, other scientists worked to make plastic better. Today, plastic is everywhere. Bags and bottles are made of plastics. Today many products are made from recycled plastic.

Everyday Inventions

Before you readThink of how difficult your life would be if it were not for the various scientific tools that you use in your daily lives, like phones, television, cars, calculators.

The Telephone Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone made it possible for us to have radios and cell phones. “Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you.” Those simple words changed history. How? Those were the first words spoken on the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell spoke them in 1876.

Bell found a way to send the sound of a voice over wires. The sounds turned into electric signals. This led to the first telephone.

Paper Paper is one of the oldest inventions. The ancient Egyptians made a kind of paper over 3,000 years ago. They used a plant called papyrus. That is where we get the word paper. Long ago, paper was not cheap, so only the rich used it. There were no ways to erase mistakes. Only scribes, people with special training, learned to write on paper. Today paper is made in factories.

The Pencil Pencils are a very old invention. Long ago, people found a rock that made dark marks on paper. The rock was graphite. But there was a problem writing with these rocks. Graphite breaks very easily. So what was the answer? About 400 years ago, a clever person in Germany thought of putting the graphite into wooden tubes. The first pencil was made.

Page 154: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3154

A normal pencil can write up to 45,000 words. That is a lot of writing!

The rubber used to make erasers and other things comes from the rubber tree.

The Eraser The eraser was not invented at the same time as the first pencil. People used to erase pencil marks with pieces of bread. What a mess! Then an explorer found people in South America using rubber. He brought it back to Europe. The rubber could erase pencil marks. These first erasers were called rubber because they rubbed out pencil marks.

The Zipper There are many stories about how inventors created the zipper. One is about an inventor who had a friend with a bad back. The friend could not tie his shoes. The inventor used his genius, and after many experiments, made a sliding fastener. It could open and close the man’s shoes. It led to our modern zipper. Today zippers are on many items, from coats to luggage to backpacks. The word zipper comes from the sound that the fastener makes.

The wind is so cold in Mount Everest your toes and fingers can freeze.

The air is so thin that you’ll find it hard to breathe. And if you’re not careful, avalanches can bury you! Meet the people who live in this harsh place.

The word Sherpa means eastern people where “shar” means east and “pa” means people. It is also used as surname of most of the people living in the eastern part of Nepal. The Sherpa people live in the eastern part of our country. Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

Many Sherpas are farmers. They use strong animals called yaks to help them on the farm. Yaks look like big, hairy cows.

Children go to school, but they also help on the farm. Many children have to walk a long distance to go to school.

Many Sherpas live in villages near the mountains. This is one reason Sherpas are great climbers. They live in the hills at a high altitude and are used to the thin mountain air.

Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa have climbed Mount Everest 21 times!

Many Sherpas are guides in the mountains. Climbers from other places hire Sherpa guides to help them climb Mount Everest.

The climbers hike to base camp, which is far up the mountain. Yaks and guides carry the equipment. Climbers rest in tents at base camp for a few weeks to get used to the thin air.

Each part of the climb must be approached with care.

The groups climb one section of the mountain at a time. At each camp they sleep in tents. Near the top, climbers use oxygen tanks to help them breathe.

Some climbers have to halt their climb if they get sick or hurt.

Mount Everest can be a very dangerous climb.

Famous Sherpas Many Sherpas have climbed the high slopes of Mount Everest. The most famous Sherpa is Tensing Norgay. He reached the top of the mountain with Sir Edmund Hillary.

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa was the first Nepali woman to successfully climb the Mount Everest.

Babu Sherpa also set a record on Mount Everest. He slept in a tent on top of the mountain. He stayed on the top for almost a whole day. This is hard to do because it is bitterly cold at the top, and the air is thin.

Some sherpas are fast climbers.

Page 159: Green Treasure

Treasure English Literature Studies-3 159

One guide climbed from base camp to the top in less than nine hours. Most climbers take a week to climb to the top.

Lhakpa Sherpa climbed to the top of the mountain four times. She was the first woman to do this. Her younger sister, Ming Kipa, was the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest. Lhakpa Sherpa and her sister, Ming, both set climbing records on Mount Everest.

More and more people want to climb Mount Everest. They need guides, food, and a place to sleep. This increases the number of jobs for Sherpas.

Some Sherpa climbers work to help children in their villages. For example, some Sherpas helped to pay for new schools in their villages. They also serve the community by donating money when needed.

Sherpas respect the mountains and want to take care of them. In the past, climbers left garbage on the slopes. Now Sherpas are cleaning it up.

Sherpas are strong climbers and gentle people. They hope people keep climbing their mountains. If they do, you can bet a Sherpa guide will be there to help them succeed.
