The SoulThe SoulThe SoulThe Soul: Life and Death: Life and Death: Life and Death: Life and DeathThe soulsoulsoulsoul, according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is the self-aware essence unique to a par ticular living being. In these traditions the soul isthought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sapience. It is believed in many cultures and religions that the soul isthe unification of one's sense of identity. Souls are usually considered to be immortal and to exist prior to incarnation.

The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what may happen to thesoul after the death of the body. Some religions don't even believe in the soul (Hinduism). Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as

immaterial, while others consider it to possibly have a material component, and some have even tried to establish the weight of the soul.

Soul. (2007, December 16). In Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Retrieved 16:12, December 16, 2007, fromhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Soul&oldid=178301126(9)

To attain a high level of enlightenment one must attain a figurative death (Spiritual Death) of the old self. Byputting behind the old self one may be freed from the chains holding oneself to this cage called reality or ObjectiveUniverse. By obtaining spiritual death this helps the new self-rise from the grave of this existence (Physical World) and

be reborn anew (The higher self of enlightenment).

As above, so below what we attain in the physical presence of our spirituality we take into the beyond and into theUniverse. We must work hard to attain this enlightenment so that we may move from this present world and on toour self-deification. Our spirit and soul merely use these vessels of flesh to tie it to the present now(Subjective/Objective Universe), so it may become enlightened. After the physical is gone it can become freed from this

mortal body. The spiritual self may go forth into the after and Become immortalized to continue to Xeper.

Failure to free the spirit and soul merely dooms them to become one with the entire existing Objective Universe. Whatis meant from this is that we merely fail to maintain a conscious beyond death and become absorbed back into everythingthat is real in the Objective existence. This is the cage of the uncontrollable Objective Universe. This is where the soulbecomes one with the nothingness the void of the abyss. But the problem is that the soul (Ba) will consciously loose itspresent knowledge forgetting its previous self and digressing as it prepares for re-emergence into another fleshly cage. This is done so as it moves from this existence into the next without proper magical training. This makes it harder foradvancement of the Ba (Spirit/Soul). If the soul and spirit are ancient, then through meditation and enlightenment canthe knowledge of the past come back to its fruition; now what this means is that we have a collective existence of manylost souls within ourselves. Through meditation one may be able to tap into the powers of these lost and pieced souls. This is a very difficult task at hand, which is why this is nearly impossible to achieve; however, one can ascertain, that itis wholly possible through ones expanded ability. Subjective consciousness, among others and to truly Xeper in themortal realm; a realization of the self, growing and then moving beyond it taking all that is gathered from it and placingit into your arsenal of knowledge.

Death in itself is not a representation of the end; death is a representation of just a small portion of the cycle of life.Death is not the end but the beginning of a new life. Therefore it maintains the cycle of existence. For every deaththere is a birth, and every birth begat a death. You must be born to grow and through your life cycles you degenerate, then you must physically die. In this physical death is the great the initiation. This is truly the biggest goal of one whowishes to maintain consciousness beyond death. Now I understand that not all wish this and if this is not what youchoose than you can still make your present living existence pleasurable.

The true question is what is beyond the physical death? What happens after you pass from this level of existence to thenext? There are many theories; such as reincarnation, death until a god or savior comes to save the world of mankindand theories of life after death. Certain Egyptians cultures believed, where the Ba rejoined its physical shell. However,we dont have any specific proof that is presently known through paranormal or scientific research. So it is impossible totruly know until you achieve the Great Initiation, what is truly beyond! Death is not the end it is the beginning, therefore a representation of death are not symbols of hate, evil, or end. But, are symbols of one life cycle completingand coming to an end, and the start of a new one. Death should not be feared; but rejoiced for it is the passing from thispainful fleshy cage to true spiritual freedom through the Great Initiation and ones ability to Xeper.

We should not fear death because it is going to happen to all living organisms, whether it is wanted or not. Death is justan evolution, we evolve from this living cage we call our bodies, to the spiritual and divine freedom, where there is norestrictions. The spiritual being will survive beyond this earth realm (Objective Universe) and can move from here tothe spiritual realm (God-Hood) as long as we prepare ourselves in the now. Freedom is obtained through death. Life isbeautiful, but death is divine.

Let not the mind of a magician stray from that, which is the highest desire. I speak not of solid fleshly desire. Althoughas a traveler of the left hand path fleshly desire is a part of the life we lead. I am also alluding to the desire, which draws

us closer to our own Xeper our ability to grow and Become something greater. Not what makes us men but thatwhich makes us gods! We are of everything and of nothing. In this nothing we create ourselves!

When I say everything I speak of all that exist down to the smallest molecular structure. This is truly where we liveforever. As I remember to my earlier years of scientific theories in school. We were taught that energy, and moleculesdo not die it merely changes form. So do we change throughout the ages? We carry our souls (Ba) as one whole andcomplete soul (Ba); this is the universe that we live in. In Quantum Physics some molecular structures can eventransverse from one plain of existence to another and back. So nothing ever ceases except for ones individualconsciousness if not trained loose its state.

When I speak of nothingness, we as humanity are of nothing; the void of darkness. But what is darkness? Darkness iseverything; black absorbs all colors of the entire spectrum. Black being the color of darkness and darkness representsnothingness. So we are everything in this nothingness. A reality created by our own viewed perception, which makes usreal. We create that which we are, and we know desire.

Desire as we have evolved, is not what we really know. One may say that we all know desire; and this mortal life ofdesire is not far from that which is true. But, can he truly define desire? Nay he cannot. We desire much of thisworld. But, what have we fulfilled once we have attained this worldly desire. We have really attained nothing for the

void of desire still lies deep within our conscious minds. But truly only our subconscious knows that which we trulydesire.

Now you may question why I speak of a desire beyond the things of this world. Everyone knows that a follower of theLeft Hand Path is of this world. This desire is only a part of which makes us whole. Worldly desires can only give usso much pleasure. Just like a new toy or gadget, which we buy for our pleasure wares quickly to dissatisfaction. We areempty once again. The desire I speak of now is not of this world. It is of that which is after and beyond, that which isof another realm or existence. We desire to become one with ourselves to find our inner Black Flame; to become thatwhich is of brightest and darkest illumination known to mankind.

The truest question of all is how does one attain such illumination? This is the most difficult of questions to answer.

There truly is no real easy answer, other than an outline of what steps one might take to achieve that illumination.Imagine all that is and is not and formulate it into a whole, once you have done this you have achieved a glimpse of atotality of our Objective Universe. But once one has attained this picture, which is surreal, we quickly fall from it. Wedesire more, wanting and yearning for it. It aches so much without it, we welcome the coming forth into the darkness.

Now there are many religions that teach the basic precepts of this, but they have filled in the blanks with maddeningmuttering of this dull and grim existence. So we die and assimilate into a new form. This is the way of this life and thisis not what one truly desires.

What we are and what we are meant to do is to separate and Become; that which is great and assume god form.

Through this god form do we attain that which is a trait of a true black magician; to become whole and maintain a uniquedifference of ourselves in this matrix of molecular existence that we call life.

This is the way to dance with the gods of the past, present, and of the future; be they separate or of our god form.Know thyself and know the universe. Meditate much on the void and go deep within it, to go deep within thyself anddiscover ones destiny. Learn the powers of the currents within and become self deified. This is the desire that we seek.Only this desire will fill the emptiness within us all.

Memento Mori is a phrase in Latin to remind us that we are mortal. Remember, you will die. Its really a reminderto enjoy earthly pleasures while you can, and bask in your own vanity because it will fade with age. Still-life paintingswere referred to as Vanitas (Vanity). Traditionally, Memento Mori paintings or effigies include skulls, fading flowers, dead animals, insects or their pupae, snuffed candles, or fruit beyond its prime. They were artistically inserted into apainting of a person as a reminder to remember ones own mortality.

Detail from a painting in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain

Memento Mori Painting by D.A. Rose, 2008

In lieu ofFourth Way Philosophy, and remembering ourselves; I thought Memento Mori was an appropriate topic to breachthis season. A reminder to live each day, as if it were the last. You will not live forever, if you died tomorrow doyou think you would be satisfied with your life today? Is there anything you would regret? Anything you wouldchange? Something you wish you would have done? What is stopping you from making changes? Accomplishing yourlifes goals? Perhaps you need a Memento Mori to remind you that tomorrow, you may die.

Which leads me to the Macabre: an atmosphere filled with dreadful things, and morbid reminders of your immanentdeath. If you forget you will die, perhaps your atmosphere isnt macabre enough.

La Danse Macabre French, for a dance with death. This is what you are doing each day, dancing with death. Oneday closer to the grave. Time flies, and before you know it you will be elderly with a foot in the grave reminiscing aboutyour youth, and missed opportunities.

Perhaps this was the unconscious goal of HP Lovecraft, to remind us of the Waltz with death.

In modern pagan tradition, Samhain is a holiday revered for the parting of the veil, the opportunity to commune with

death in the form of fallen ancestors. In Christianity, it is celebrated as All Souls Day, celebrated as the Feast of AllSouls celebrating the lives and deaths of the dearly departed. (Nov 1 & 2rd, All Saints Day the following Sunday

3rd). Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for the Spanish speaking countries, andYom el Maoutin Lebanon, Israel andSyria, and the Chinese have the Ghost Festival. November 8th, is the Roman day of the dead. Some form of ancestorveneration is performed in all parts of the world, during the months of October and November.

These celebrations remind us of our own mortality, as we surround ourselves with the Macabre.

    Ancestor Altar, October 2009 CoraSahn

This altar was a tribute to my father, Robert Dana Jones II,who died in August 2006. My father was a devout Roman Catholic, and often called out to the Holy Mother. It was not uncommon forhim to believe he was under the Molochio (the Evil Eye). What you see

represented here, are elements of my fathers beliefs, as well as my own.

I have always enjoyed the idea that My life is enriched by death, an ideaheld by many. In fact, it is the Latin translation to one of the engravings

in the book Club Dumas, written in 1993 by Arturo Prez-Reverte. Itis represented by the hanged man. The first engraving I painted in theNine Gates series featured in the book.

    I am enriched by death.

    Artwork by CoraSahn

How is my life enriched by death? By keeping it in mind, today could be the day I die. If Idie, has my life been lived to the fullest? The constant reminder ensures that I do not forgetand that my time is limited. As each day passes, I am a step closer to death.

For the year 2010, my memento Mori, will be a Life Mask cast in plaster of myself, andsome jewelry which will incorporate my sons baby teeth, as well as a series of paintings I

will be working on leading up to my 36th birthday.

Create a Macabre atmosphere all your own, so that you may not forget your own mortality,or lose sight of your lifes goals. Create your own Momento Mori.
