The building forms the centre piece to the new attraction at the well known amusement park for ‘Peppa Pig World’ and his friends. With underfloor heating, wind catchers, super insulated building shell, rainwater harvesting, hybrid frame and locally sourced timber cladding the 10,000 sq.ft facility opened in spring 2011.

. More than 30 varieties of wildflower, plus four different grasses
. Like a winter coat, it keeps the building warm in winter
. Evaporating rainwater from the soil, keeps the building cool in summerGreen Roof

. Wind and sun power to keep the building cool
. 7 ‘wind-catchers’ on the roof, bring fresh air in and take stale air out
. The ‘wind catchers’ also have south facing photovoltaic panels to power the fans when the wind is low
Wind Catchers
Passive Ventilation Green Roof Rainwater Harvesting
Local building materials & services Heating Bund forming
. Rainwater is collected and stored in the man-made lake at the rear
. The lake also keeps the wildflower roof fresh and healthy
. This provides water conservation and reduces water bills!

. The outside wall cladding uses Douglas Fir, grown and harvested in the New Forest
. All timber is untreated, and uses its natural qualities for the building’s rainscreen cladding
. Where possible local tradesmen and materials have been used

. Underfloor piped water, with a small gas-fired boiler keeps the building warm in winter
. The north-south orientation of the building is a key design factor: - Plenty of natural daylight on the northside
- Reduces the need to switch lighting on
- Fewer windows, keeps the building cool on the southside

. Rather than removing the construction soil from the site, it has been used to form the bund at the rear of the building
. This provides effective screening, as well as supporting the local wildlife eco-system

...with a target audience of young children and families, HPW provided a building as a platform to promote the value of sustainablity working at grassroots level.

What happened next? The latest 20,000 sq.ft Gateway Building at the park was completed in 2014. No organic roof,
but incorporating many energy efficient and resilient elements including:. 17 wind catchers as part of a natural ventilation strategy. Underfloor heating with facility to cool. LED lighting throughout the building. A super-insulated building shell to reduce energy use. Natural illumination via skylights and clerestory windows. Use of light tubes in deep span spaces. Douglas fir cladding that had been forested and prepared seven miles from site. SUDS and water collection in the adjacent lake. 456 solar PV panels on adjacent buildings providing 7% of the park's electrical needs.
Not bad for an owner/operator who had previously had little interest in building to sustainable principles!
