In keeping with Green Lifestyle’s knowledge and reputation in Australia’s green sector, we introduced these awards to give recognition to the wonderful companies and people who are leading the charge toward a cleaner and greener living environment. We strive to recognise the people who are taking the positive and genuine step of working toward green becoming the norm. So, this year, Green Lifestyle would like to once again welcome nominations of people and businesses that are leading the way towards a cleaner and greener world.

Who can nominate?Anyone! Both businesses and readers alike are encouraged to nominate those they deem worthy of a Green Lifestyle Award.

We’d love our readers and the public to nominate any outstanding businesses, products or people they believe are leading the green charge.

Meanwhile, businesses can also nominate themselves and their products and provide details on the inspiring green efforts they’re undertaking with their services or products.

So, get sharing, we want to hear from you!

What will the judges look for?Judges are looking for businesses, products and services that minimise their environmental footprint as much as possible. In the people category, judges are seeking people who have made a significant impact in the green and/or community sector. For more details, see the Terms and Conditions at www.greenlifestylemag.com/greenawards.

CATEGORIESREADER’S CHOICE:

Do you have a favourite lifestyle product or company that you can’t live without?

Then let others know about its greatness too, and nominate it for the Reader’s Choice prize now!

Think about which ethical product or company makes you buzz the most, and vote for it – the most amount of votes will win. With one vote counted per person, your vote really does matter for this coveted award.

Businesses should note that they cannot nominate themselves for this award, but they can encourage their customers to nominate – we’ve even provided some handy ‘share’ buttons for your website or e-newsletters at: www.greenlifestylemag.com.au/greenawards/share.php.

PEOPLE:

Hall of fame

Previous winners were Bob Brown (2012) and Olivia Newton-John (2013), so who will be the next person to grace our Hall of Fame? Nominate those you ultimately admire and believe will be revered for years to come.

Local green hero

At Green Lifestyle, we believe that lots of smaller actions can make a big difference. Since effective change starts close to home, we’re looking for people who have made a significant contribution to their local community.

Junior green hero

From little things, big things grow… Aussie kids are great eco-warriors, so if you know a suitable junior greenie let’s celebrate the great achievements of some small but powerful change-makers.

Hall of Fame Profile

2013 WINNER: OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHNOlivia has championed such important causes as saving dolphins from unethical fishing practices and stopping clear-fell logging of pristine forest in Tasmania’s Styx Valley. She has lent her voice to those questioning controversial fracking processes used in coal seam gas mining in Queensland where there are concerns about the impact on ground water among other issues.

Olivia Newton-John at the launch of One Tree Per Child in April 2013, with fellow tree-planting advocate, Estelle Dee.

GARDEN: Company

Gardening is cheaper than therapy, and you get fresh produce! So, what companies help you out most while getting your earthly fix? Or, perhaps you run a great gardening company that you think deserves the cred.

Product

Getting the most out of your garden can be so much easier with the right products. Share your knowledge on the products that can help us the most, and have the biggest potential for creating a more productive garden in the greenest way.

Community group

We can achieve more as a whole team than we can individually. Community gardens and backyard community groups are prime examples of this, but that doesn’t come without a few hardships along the way; so Green Lifestyle wants to celebrate those doing their best to build more sustainable communities.

2013 READER’S CHOICE: HONEST TO GOODNESSA Sydney-based supplier of quality organic food and wholefoods, Honest to Goodness were last year’s winners of the Reader’s choice category. The ethical business has grown for over 10 years, to now operate as a trusted importers, exporters, wholealers, distributors and online retailers, with Australian Certified Oganic accreditation.

Winner Profile

HOME: Energy-saving

Households use 32 per cent of the energy produced in Australia, so it’s important to recognise the people and organisations that aim to make our homes more energy efficient. Do you know a company that helps homes to make great energy savings, or does your organisation do this?

Water-saving

In our land of droughts and flooding rains water conservation is highly valued. The majority of Australians are pretty water-wise, but we want to hear about those people or companies that are extraordinarily good at saving this precious pure resource.

Product

Green Lifestyle proves that green living can be easy – but this is especially so with good green products in the home. Green products have infiltrated all the corners of our home, from building materials, appliances, pillows, and cookware to cushions. The list is endless, but who tops the lot?

Company

Where would we be without our trusted ethically-aware plumbers, painters, architects, builders, carbon assessors, solar providers, cleaners, textile producers, furniture-makers and more? Well, our houses would be a lot less pretty, that’s for sure.

FOOD:Restaurant

Far from being a ‘fad’, sustainable food is now considered a pinnacle attainment of accomplished food professionals. This category will host the finest list of venues and chefs setting sustainable meals down on the table.

Product

Is there one food product that’s the fairest of them all? Taking into consideration the environmental impact along with principled production and packaging, what products truly embody Australia’s good green food?

Winery/Brewery

Let’s make a toast! To the winery or brewery that shows admirable leadership in environmentally friendly and aware practices. So get tasting, and nominate now for your favourite drop of guilt-free fun.

Company

Thinking globally and acting locally comes easy to these food providers – giving us the best and healthiest produce and services that don’t harm our environment. Is there a company whose products are consistently amazing, who are the pinnacle of sustainability behind the scenes, or who are working to green our food culture?

FASHION / BEAUTY:Fashion company

An eco-ethos needn’t mean a drab wardrobe, and this category shows the best-selling quality performers are often those with an important message in the clothing as well.

Fashion product

Worn a trendy thread or accessory that made you feel special? Bought some lovely material that you worked with to make your own clothes? Vote for your favourite fashion product now in the Green Lifestyle Awards.

Beauty company

Our skin is our largest organ, and we all want to look after what goes into our bodies, not to mention what goes down the drain into the environment. Support companies that support a better world.

Beauty product

What eco-wonder products make us look good in a green way that doesn’t mean we have to turn the lights off? With the plethora of beauty products available, it’s not going to be easy to choose which ones are deemed worthy of being crowned best green product. But we can try.

TRAVEL:Accommodation

This is the place for recognition of those homes-away-from-home that go against convention and take ‘greenliness’ to a higher level when you’re away from your natural habitat.

Tourism company

Save time and worry and let someone who understands what you want out of your holiday to arrange it for you. Do you know or run an organisation that helps create a positive experience for local people? Nominate now!

WELLBEING:Product

What health and wellbeing products take production, packaging and waste into account to ensure we feel good both using the product and about living our green lives?

Service/Company

You know you’re in good company when you can ask if the tea you’re being served after your petroleum-free massage is certified organic. That’s why we wanted to shout out a few loud and proud to everyone that there are true leaders in green wellbeing out there that make us feel happy.

BUSINESS: Large

Sustainable big business – is it possible? By taking the right and moral way, we think it is: so if you know or are you part of a business with more than 15 people that’s taking part in a green revolution, nominate now.

Small

With smaller budgets and fewer people to lend a hand, small businesses who make a conscious sustainability effort deserve a big bravo. Here we recognise those with less than 15 people and a little ecological footprint.

NGO/NFPNon-Government Organisations and Not-for-profits work super hard to create positive change in the world. Take a moment to nominate those who are making waves and doing it well.

Recycling initiative

With limited resources, recycling is more important than ever. Get your nominations in for those recycling products, companies and services that are bound to make a difference.

KIDS: Product

Keeping kids from harm’s way can be a tough act sometimes... Thanks though to some of the great products flooding the market, it’s getting easier to steer them clear of chemical-ridden and unsustainable products. Nominate those products that are keeping your kids in the clear.

Company

They could be big, they could be small, but which kids company is the most sustainable of all? It’s a double-whammy; these companies don’t just get kids, they get eco-conscious parents and the environment too.

TRANSPORT:Company

In 2011, transport accounted for 16 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Australia. Some transport companies know that a love of speed doesn’t have to be synonymous with greed. These companies don’t neglect the environment when looking at production, quality and practicality – indeed they find ways to make moving about greener and better.

ONLINE: Eco shopping site

It’s always time for some good retail therapy with these snazzy sites. Put your money where your mouth is and let us know which sites you think deserve to win.

Eco info site

While the Green Lifestyle website is your one-stop resource for green news, features, blogs, reviews, green jobs, events and competitions, we can’t quench all our reader’s thirsts for knowledge. So where else should readers go to get more out of their online time?

A GREEN LIVING HERO: MALCOLM RANDS, CO-FOUNDER OF ECOSTOREIn the late 80’s, Malcolm began researching the products he and his family were using in their home – shampoo, dishwashing liquid, laundry powder, soaps, and more – but found it tough to get lists of all the ingredients. He says the details were, “almost impossible to find out. Companies were allowed to use whatever they liked and didn’t have to tell anyone about the ingredients”.

In the absence of suitable household products on the market, Malcolm and his wife Melanie started to make their own products. Wanting to share all these great products with others, they set up an online site where people could buy products via a mail-order all around New Zealand – at the time, a fairly unconventional method of distribution. “Only some Kiwis were crazy enough to buy dishwashing liquid by mail order,” laughs Malcolm.
