About SLK FoundationAbout SLK Foundation

SLK Foundation is a registered charitable trust, with a mission statement-"Creation of wealth from waste". The trust is named after S.L Kirloskar, doyen of the Kirloskar group, to commemorate his memory.

Pankaj Narayan Pandit, is founder and managing trustee of SLK Foundation; it has no connection whatsoever with the Kirloskar group.

SLK Foundation has used All India Radio to broadcast over 55 talks in radio program named ”Parisar”, to create awareness on environmental issues such as household garbage, Recycling of Potable water, and other choices of sustainable lifestyle.

About SLK FoundationAbout SLK Foundation

The environmental awareness due “Parisar” resulted in Mumbai municipality making a law in 2002 that punishes citizens, Rs. 1500/- for mixing wet and dry household garbage.

The thin gauge plastic bags, less than 20 micron, have been banned which has reduced litter of plastic garbage to some extent.– After July'26' 05 deluge, Maharashtra Government

banned plastic bags; however it cannot be fully implemented as milk bags, etc continue to be packed in plastic.

– 100% Recycling of plastic, making wrong disposal plastic a punishable offence is a better idea.

Urbanization, and western living standards in Urbanization, and western living standards in

India India .... At the time of independence, India had 26% population living in cities With more migration towards cities, Urban :Rural ratio is now @ 40:60. World over the urban rural divide now is almost 50:50, will tilt in favor of

Urban citizens in near future. Preference for a urban life style means

– composition of household garbage will consist of more and more man made articles, like plastic derivatives, paper used for packing, etc

– Use of energy like fossil fuels, electricity will increase exponentially– Use of water will increase

Solution is to reinvent ways of living that cause least impact on our environment

Is Ocean a sewage treatment plant? Is Ocean a sewage treatment plant?Sewage, a growing threat to oceans and seasSewage, a growing threat to oceans and seas, , As per "State of the Marine Environment" report, substantial progress had been achieved in

reducing oily wastes and organic pollutants such as long-lived industrial chemicals in the past two decades but other problems had grown worse.

In many developing countries, between 80 and 90 percent of sewage entering coastal zones is estimated to be raw and untreated, as per the UNEP global program of action for protection of marine environment (GPA).

The pollution -- linked to rising coastal populations, inadequate treatment infrastructure and poor waste handling facilities -- is putting at risk human health and wildlife as well as livelihoods from fisheries to tourism, it said.

Arctic has seen two-three times increase in concentration of mercury in seals and whales, affecting mangrove forests -- needed for coastal defenses and fisheries, as well as coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Growing coastal populations and overuse of marine resources are the main source of the problem, as 40 percent of the world's population live on the coastal fringe.

Threatened areas include the North Sea's bed, coral reefs in South East Asia, wetlands in North America, Southern and Western Africa, mangroves in many Caribbean countries, Ecuador and Colombia, and fisheries in Latin America.

The report also noted increasing levels of pollutants from sources like agricultural fertilizer, manure, sewage and fossil fuel burning, with the problem spreading from developed to developing countries as well.

This has led to doubling of the number of oxygen deficient coastal "dead zones" every decade since 1960, and degradation of seagrass beds and emergence of toxic algal blooms.

Estimated 80 percent of marine pollution originates from the land and this could rise significantly by 2050 if, as expected, coastal populations double in just over 40 years time and action to combat pollution is not accelerated.

Our Planet, our lifestyle and the environmentOur Planet, our lifestyle and the environmentCan we do something about it?Can we do something about it?

SLK Foundation's goals Reaching out to citizens, special interest groups like

architects, about their responsibility to environment Strengthen the rag pickers' supply chain Offer "selfish reasons " to adopt CDM, recycle plastic Popularize clean technologies for sewage waster water

treatement, power generation, recycling of waste matters, Popularize use of material from recycling such as bricks made

from fly ash (than using top soil), Pots made from recycled plastic (than using earthern ones), etc

Building the Green way!Building the Green way!

Green buildings cost 20% less per sq foot to operate Green buildings are becoming global trend, as Bank of America,

IBM, British Airways, Toyota are constructing such buildings. Green buildings cause less negative impact on environment due,

– saving natural resources by use of alternative materials – Use 33% or less water – More abundant day light– Costs of green buildings are coming down – More employee productivity due to more abundant day lighting,

individual climate control, less etc– Recycle construction waste than sending trucks to landfill– Efficient HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning) – Low VOC (Volatile organic compound) materials like paint, flooring,

and furniture), creating superior indoor air quality

Ten Rules for Green BuildingsTen Rules for Green Buildings

1. Focus on big picture: Entire project team, architects, engineers, contractors, consultants must be committed to Green technologies with experience in planning, construction of Green buildings

2. Choose a sustainable site: Do not construct on prime farm land, lake, wetland, park, historic site.

3. Do the Math on cost benefit analysis :Each major component such as green roof v/s standard roof, over tenure of building

4. Better Site Planning : To reduce onsite work like roads, parking lots, earthwork, that lower costs as well as reduce infrastructure footprint.

5. Landscaping : Minimize heat islands, green roofs, trees to create microclimate, etc

Green roof helps clean air, serves as wildlife habitat, absorbs, fliters rain water, for rain water harvesting, cools room as its temperature is 70 degrees cooler

Ten Rules for Green BuildingsTen Rules for Green Buildings6. Design for Green : Long narrow shape to maximise natural

lighting, skylights, ventilation, avoid over-engineering ie overuse of concrete, cement, etc

7. Take advantage of technology: Photovoltaic cells on rooftop, gas micro turbines that use sewage gas, water based vapor absorption air conditioning, solar heating, lighting that consumes less electricity, saves energy in long run

8. Save Water: Water conserving irrigation, manmade retention ponds, wetlands, waterless urinals, use recycled water for toilet flushing, watering plants, etc

9. Use alternative materials: Bricks made from fly ash, flooring made from jute, and linseed oil(than using vinyl than has toxins), zero VOC, low lead content paints

10. Construct green: Construction activity that 1. Avoids all practices which breed mosquitoes, mold, bacteria;

2. Avoids mixing wet, dry materials;

3. Recycles construction waste for structural fill for new site.

Over 2,000,000 kW of installed gas engine power.

Gas engines are the internal combustion engines with the greatest variety of processing fuels. As they are basically particularly low emission engines they play a leading part in energy supply generally and environmental viable alternative to nuclear and thermal power stations on the other hand.

To make an extra contribution to the conservation of environment and resources was a top priority in the development of DEUTZ gas engine gensets, using lean-burn combustion.

The lean-burn process can be applied to engines of all displacements, from the smallest to the largest, and can exploit all engine-compatible fuel gases i.e natural gas, liquid petroleum gas, bio gas, sewage, landfill, and pit gas.

Green renovations Green renovations

LEED-CI program offers guidelines to convert standard workplace into green building by following same 10 rules

CII-Sohrabji Godrej Business Centre in HYD has been awarded highest Platinum rating as it combines traditional Indian building techniques with green innovations such as two wind towers that make air conditioning redundant.

Chicago city awards additional floor space for green roof buildings, NYC state allows deductions of state sales tax, California state provided design assistance and subsidies

Being green is getting respect, becoming a necessity. Companies can create Green buildings , even without using rating

pragram Builders like Lauri Baker, Total Environment have green building

that are sustainable and make a great styling statement.

What can enlightened builders, architects do? What can enlightened builders, architects do?

For projects already completedFor projects already completed Use Solar PV for common areas, Solar water heating Housekeeping :Separate bins for dry garbage, clearly writing

on it "For Plastic, Paper , glass, only", with picture of this stuff– Enlist support of nearest ragpickers, by giving them

uniform.– Allow/Encourage/Enable rag pickers to come and pick up,

dry waste directly from such locations.– Educate housekeeping, gardeners about aerobic

composting techniques. Explore feasibility of generating electricity from CNG "Make every project, a "Zero Waste Project", and publicize to

spread its awareness.

Page 15: Green Buildings Creation of wealth from waste SLK FOUNDATION

What can enlightened builders, architects do? What can enlightened builders, architects do?

For projects on drawing boardFor projects on drawing board Explore use of construction debris for uses in project. Reduce use of concrete, steel, and make light structures Install water meters to charge residents on use of water Discourage

– use of agricultural top soil for making bricks, garden soil, etc.

– Natural granite, marble sourced from a long distance "Make use of plastic waste to water proof, make internal

roads, spread awareness on uses of plastic, as filler material

Page 16: Green Buildings Creation of wealth from waste SLK FOUNDATION

What can enlightened builders, architects do?What can enlightened builders, architects do? Use recycled water for gardening, flush toilets, etc

– Provide simple taps that you can turn ON when water is almost good, and OFF when using soap, to reduce need for water treatment

Water meters to charge people on use of water Provide for Rain water harvesting Conserve water by limited use of water , with use of plant mulch, etc. Popularize the environment friendly concepts of zero waste garbage,

recycled water for gardening, rain water harvesting , solar water heater, among builder, architect communities.

Lobby with government, local bodies to plant more tress along roads, reserve garden plots, strictly implement laws against littering of storm water drains, mixing of household garbage.

Make it fashionable to be a Green citizen, advertise about this in the site, with displays.

Green Building code coming in India soonGreen Building code coming in India soon

ECBC(Energy Conservations Building Code) is expected to be announced by Jan’07, making guidelines for green buildings. BEE (Bureau of Architects) will interact with architects to help plan buildings that are ECBC compliant.

Compliance to ECBC will be initially voluntary, later mandatory by year 2010.

The code will have checklist for design parameters – Insulation levels in roof, walls– Performance requirements for windows, skylights, – Specifications in air conditioning, ventilation – Solar Water heating , Green roof , rain water harvesting will be

encouraged. – Wasteful use of electricity will be curtailed.

The energy conservation act of 2001 has provision to make ECBC mandatory for commercial buildings.

BEE has divided country into five climatic zones, and two kinds of buildings; one which operate for limited number of days during week like schools, offices, shops, etc; and other like hospitals , hotels that run 24 hours for seven days.
